I became a fan of George Perez with the Teen Titans # 1, back in 1980 when I was 19 years old! I was obsessed by his clean art and action poses artwork that reminded me like if Curt Swan and Neal Adams had a 'kid'!

My favorite part of Marvel's Epic collections has been discovering George's work in the Avengers. It's so busy with activity and the humor really comes across while still maintaining just enough realism to make darker tone shifts feel organic.

At one point, I had around 150 Essentials. Had a couple from the late 90s, early 2000s, but got out of comics for a decade. When I came back around 2012, I was obsessed with tracking them down and I got a lot of them on eBay for a good price right when they were being discontinued and the Epic Collections were introduced to replace them. But then a few years ago during COVID, I started getting into Marvel's omnibus collection and began selling off some of the ones I bought in that format. Now I'm at a point where I just don't have the space anymore and it looks I'll be parting with more of my collection. But I'm glad to see others are still tracking down and collecting them. Oddly, enough, the three in your video are ones I never had! I had Power Man vol. 2, Iron First and Power Man & Iron First... but not Vol. 1. I had Avengers 1-6, but never Vol. 9. And I never had ANY of Moon Knight. I, too, can't do single issues anymore. I prefer reading in collected format and I find the older stuff (up through the 90s) more fulfilling for the most part.

Nice video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Frazetta and Boris who definitely have different styles when it comes to the human form. Frazetta's art involves stylized exaggeration, ethereal and dreamlike, letting the viewer's imagination fill in gaps. Boris is a master of realism, depicting "what the body can actually do", as you say, in intricate detail. They are each experts in their own styles. I don't think a given artist's work is better than another's simply because it's more realistic. I think stylized art and realistic art are two different sub-genres that each have their own merits. For example, although I feel Boris draws more jaw-dropping depictions of the female form (ones that make your heart skip a beat when you turn the page and first lay eyes on them), I do tend to get more lost staring at Frazetta's paintings. I also think artists with exaggerated styles can be more creative and visually distinct, such as Alfonso Azpiri, Bruce Timm, Peter Chung, and Simon Bisley. Which was the first Boris painting that you said you saw as a kid and were so amazed by it? I share your fondness for Dave Stevens. I have his "Vamps & Vixens" artbook, and his "Scorcher" and "Sins of Prima" drawings are incredible. Based on what you said about Boris, I think you might like the art by Patrick J. Jones, Dorian Cleavenger, Ken Kelly, and Luis Royo. Also, as a fellow booty fan, I suspect you might share my fondness for these: > "Sea Creatures" and "Leather Jacket" by Boris Vallejo > "Dark Temptress" by Clyde Caldwell > "Wings of Battle" by dcwj > "Mahar Ritual" by Joe Jusko > "Portal of Time" by Ken Kelly > "Vulture's Circle #2" by Lucio Parrillo > "Vampirella Magazine #1" by Mark Texiera

@@BlockBusterGraphicWorks Robert E. McGinnis is AWESOME, and I have his artbook as well. His art is like a link between classic pin-up art and modern fantasy art, and his paintings "The Consummata", "Arnold Freedman", and "Model for Murder" are spectacular. Similar artists I fancy: Samson Pollen, Ron Lesser, Enric Torres-Prat, Sanjulian, and David Wright. Joe Jusko is in my top 5, and his Dejah Thoris themed works are out of this world. His cover to "Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris #1" is especially delicious. You and I have VERY similar tastes! It's a pleasure exchanging thoughts. Do you recall which Boris painting it was that you first saw as a kid? Do you think that is what first got you interested in fantasy art?

@@bf7775 wow it's was so long ago I know I was in the 5th grade at the time. I think it was Conan it was definitely a barbarian that much I do know and I'll never forget the name Boris for some strange reason I wanted to know the name of the artist. I wish I could tell you for sure what painting it was, I've seen so much art through the years even with the art books I have of Boris nothing in them reminds me of the one painting I seen in that art store, the one thing I will say it holds a special place in my heart on how much I appreciate the world of art.

@@BlockBusterGraphicWorks Awesome! I think my first introduction to fantasy art was Les Edwards' amazing box art for the board game Heroquest which also prominently features a barbarian. Fantasy art is such a great celebration of the idealized human form, the contrast between male and female, and the wonderful mythical settings. Great stuff!

Would you say the Taschen publication overall is at the top of the heap when it comes to Frazetta books, or is there a comparable substitute already available (even if it's in several volumes) for the budget minded enthusiast?

To be honest I would have to say Taschen gives you more then enough of Frazetta art I just feel they can do this in a smaller size, for me icon is a great book also Legacy and his sketchbooks I would say all of the vanguard books you can't go wrong with the Frazetta books put out by vanguard.

Marvel Essentials and DC Showcase Presents b&w volumes are by far my favorite comic series that were put out in the last 20 years. Really wish they kept them going. I also prefer getting all this great art in b&w. Even as a kid in the 70's, I never thought the coloring was on the same level as the ink work.
