Even the marine plants can hardly grow there.

Great video.. wonderful visibility and it's both fascinating and awe-inspiring to see how the rocks have been scoured and striated over time, as well as some of the features that cause the whirlpools and the upwelling in the tidal race. I've seen similar scoured pothole features from glacial river run-offs.Keep on diving and making films!

Thanks! This video is 4 years old, but we are planning a similar dive tomorrow. I'll bring my gopro to see if we can catch more of the interesting underwater life in Saltstraumen

Seem to be no current in the water. Is the maelstrom "active" as you are diving here? i saw some video where the current is announced to be 27 knots. Or perhaps the maelstrom is "quieter" by certains hours than others of the day?

Thank you. This maelstrom is one of my "childhood dreams", since I was 12 and have read "20.000 lieues sous les mers" written by J. Verne, particularly the final scene when the Nautilus sinks, driven by the maelström...

So the maelstrom actually goes through that whole they were diving when it is 'active'?

You dive on the slack. There are two slacks every twenty-four hours.

So what would happen if you got caught in it during its active period? Would it pin you to the bottom or take you down before tossing you out of its circulation? I'm speaking of course if the current doesn't slam you against the rocks on the way down?
