My Top 5 Fantasy Books of All Time....so far (2024)
January - Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. Its his take on pulpy old school sci fi, so so fun and thought provoking. 4.5 stars February - I only reread books this month, so probably Drawing of the Three by Stephen King. 2nd book of the Dark Tower series, where it truly comes to life. 5 stars. March - 11/22/63 by Stephen King. This one was a beautiful slow burn that will make you rethink your preconception of Stephen King. 5 stars April - Duma Key. Ok ok I know this is a lot of Stephen King, but he has some total bangers. This one is best read without knowing much, but there's some hauntingly beautiful magical realism. 4.5 stars at least May - That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis. The conclusion of his Sci Fi trilogy, things get absolutely bonkers. Thought provoking dystopian that explores past WWII anxieties, as well as Merlin and the descent of the gods on earth. 5 stars. June - The Road by Cormac McCarthy - totally haunting depressing, dreary and sad. But so beautiful, and with a little bit of hope. 5 stars July - The Shining by Stephen King - There's not much to say on this one. You know the story. 4 stars August - American Gods by Neil Gaiman - Fascinating exploration on what America puts its faith in, with a unique perspective from an Englishman. I know Gaiman seems like a scumbag right now, but he sure can write. 4 stars September - Golden Son. Freaking awesome. What else can I say. 4.5 stars October - The Green Mile by Stephen King. There's no way you don't this story. Like 11.22.63, it challengers your idea of what Stephen King can be, and will make you sob for days. 4.5 stars. November - Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace - It took me roughly three months to finish this (I finished at least 10 books while reading it) but the last 600 pages or so I read in a week and half. This book is a monster, and has a pretty pretension reputation (which isn't not earned lol) but it seriously has to be one of the best books of the 20th century. Wallace was one of the most talented writers of his generation and in this book he said everything there is to say about everything. Easiest 5 star of the year. December - ??? Let's face it, it'll probably be Wind and Truth. I'm about 700 pages into it and it is excellent so far. Thanks for the vid, happy reading!
Thanks for making this list and yeah Wind and Truth def will be the one in December lol
Jan: The Dark Forest, Feb: Blood Over Bright Haven, Mar: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Apr: The Tainted Cup, May: Changes, Jun: The Girl in the Tower, Jul: Spinning Silver, Aug: Demon in White, Sep: Kingdoms of Death, Oct: The Trials of Empire, Nov: Ashes of Man, Dec: Wind and Truth (even though the month isn't over yet, I know nothing is gonna top it!).

On my list next year!
I've read soo many books this year thanks for all the recommendations i enjoyed them all
Ahh love that glad you had a great year!
Yeah Name Of The Wind tho I finished was just 3 stars for me too. Beautifully written with an interesting power system but other than that, the rest are so meh: Side cast, plot.. ugh
Yeah it wasn’t for me but I can see how other people loved it
Jan: a battle between Final Empire and Grace of Kings but I'll go with the latter. Feb: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter Mar: Way of Kings Apr: Veiled Throne May: slump Jun: The Will of the Many Jul: slump Aug: Well of Ascension Sep: Between Sword of Kaigen and Hero of Ages. I agonized over this but I'm choosing Sword of Kaigen. Oct: slump Nov: Oathbringer Dec: Finished Rhythm of War and currently reading Wind and Truth so we shall see!
Glad you broke those slumps in May and July!
I’m not sure if I’ve ever left a comment on a RUclips video but I felt compelled to tell you that your recs got me out of a GIANT reading slump this year and back into reading fantasy. Since finding your page around August/September I’ve read Will of the Many, Blood Over Bright Haven, Jade City, Jade War, and now I’m getting through Jade Legacy. The momentum from reading these books (which I now cannot shut up about) helped me find books in other genres that I liked and finished too so THANK YOU. You’re the most trusted source on the internet at this point!
Ahhh yo that’s so amazing glad I could do that for you and wish you an amazing 2025!
love your vids your passion for books gets me hyped to read
Love this!
Instant subscribe. Fine I’ll read mistborn. Sigh.
One of my favorites for sure thanks!
Awesome recap for the year! I’m going to be working through some of these next year for sure.
That’s so dope
I now have The sword of Kaigen and The will of the many. The next book of the hierarchy series is The strength of the few and is expected in 2025. Now that I am off the boose my sober hobby is reading great books. cheers to all the fellow BookWorms
Don't even worry about "spooky season." You can read horror anytime you want. If you are into other books in October just read them. Great video, as always.
Thanks for that yeah I felt lowkey guilty but those books were too good not to get through lol
You have a great monthly list. Here is mine. Jan-Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky Feb-Malice by John Gwynne Mar-The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie Apr-Fool’s Fate by Robin Hobb May-Changes by Jim Butcher Jun-Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Jul-Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Aug-The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu Sep-Demon in White by Christopher Ruocchio Oct-The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon Nov-In Ascension by Martin MacInnes Dec-just 17% in, but it’s Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson
Such a great year as well!
I’m reading my first Brandon S. book in 25’. The Way of Kings. I hope I like it 😅❤
Hope you enjoy your journey!
My favs of the year Jan: read all of the murderbot diaries by Martha Wells Feb: Sword of Kaigen by ML Wang or Boys in the Valley by Phillip Fracassi March: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch or Legendborn by Tracy Deonn April: Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brando Sanderson May: The Hero of Ages by Brando Sanderson June: Blood over Bright Haven by ML Wang July: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke or The Will of the Many by James Islington August: One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig September: Howling Dark by Christopher Ruocchio October: Weyward by Emilia Hart November: Caraval by Stephanie Garber December: so far I think it will be the book I’m currently reading, The Spear cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez Had some banger months where I couldn’t decide on just one
Yeah there were some months where it was almost impossible to pick for sure
I read 1 book this year. Hoping for two next year!
Amazing! Which book did you read this year?
My 2024 reading year is my best so far! Currently on the way to finishing my 53rd book of the year!
That’s dope such a great year!
Favorite book from each month: January: Rage of Dragons February: The Last Argument of Kings March: Malice April: Jade War May: Ruin June: Wrath July: Jade Legacy August: The Heroes September: Howling Dark October: Demon in White November: 11/22/63, or morning star December: Dungeon Crawler Carl or Dark Age

Thanks for your content this year bro. I just got into fantasy and seeing how much it means to you inspires me to keep going. So many series out there to enjoy!
So many series! Glad you’re into fantasy!
Wow! What a great list! Love the video 📝 wrote them all down 😊
That’s dope hope you enjoy!
Say dungeon crawler Carl 3 times fast
Lol
I predict that Disquiet Gods by Christopher Ruocchio will win book of the month in whatever month you choose to read it.
Can’t wait to get to it next year!
Just so you know, you have ALREADY cost me quite a bit of money this year. This did not help.
Lol my baddddd
I’m in a dilemma Smitty. I just received books in the mail and I need to know which to start first. The Rage of Dragons or starting up my first Sanderson read with The Final Empire
I would do The Final Empire first get through era 1 then go to The Rage of Dragons and The Burning Series
@ awesome!!! Thanks for replying so quickly. Wasn’t expecting it lol
@ haha I finished a chapter of Wind and Truth so I was peeking through the comments
@@Smitty1423 I’ll get there one day and then I can be with all of the other cool kids
I am so happy this video popped up in my feed. I read mostly thillers and horror but want to branch out into fantasy and sci-fi. I added some of your recommendations to my TBR. I have to recommend Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby. It is one of my all time favorite books.
So dope and thanks for the rec! Loved All the Sinners Bleed so looking forward to this
Let me know if you have read and like any of these: 1. Wheel of Time 2. Realm of the Elderlings (Robin Hobb) 3. First Law 4. Malazan
Not yet, wheel of time and realm of the elderlings are high on the list next year tho
The goat
Haha crazy if true
I’m adding the ones I have not checked out into my 2025 TBR. Your content got me into reading scifi/fantasy. Great well put together content !
@@jimiasworld love that! Hope your 2025 is fireee
@ thanks same to you ⭐️
I read so many books the days just kinda blur together 😅 I couldn’t tell you what I read when if it weren’t for Goodreads lol
A great resource for sure
Thank you for this recap. I love hearing your opinions on the books you read through the year. Gives me inspiration for my next read
Nice glad I could do that for you!
FINALLY someone speaking truth about Name of the wind. Dead slow paced mess that never picks up or touches down with a villain satisfyingly. Engless side quests. Inconsistent power scaling. Writing skill cant mask the content for me. Biggest killer was having all this hype around the past deeds of the MC, only to find out they were mostly lies created at school wtf.
@@Zdahszdahs lol yeah wasn’t for me
Sun Eater definitely
@@darren2880 goes so crazy
Have you read the bound the broken ? Idk how you are with Dragon rider series but that one for sure scratched an itch I didn’t know I had
Also it was you who got me to move up the Sun eater series and my god that shit was amazing 🤣
Like how insane was it
Not yet but on my list for sure!
Book 4 of 5 comes out in a few months, I believe like april or may
I’m trying to get into way of kings right now, how many chapters did you read before you got hooked?
Probably a 1/4 of the way through but remember I dnfed the first time then came back with a fresh perspective
Man, you are not wrong about Kingdoms of Death. I'm listening to it right now and I just got to the....banquet scene in Chapter 34. Man. Man. This is my favorite Sun Eater yet but at the same time, I feel like Christopher Ruocchio has personally scarred me
My man I was soooo scarred after reading that, good luck in Ashes of man as well lol
@@Smitty1423 Thanks! The whole torture-to-Severine proposition part of this book is like 4 hours that I'm gonna need therapy after lol
January - Oathbringer February - Babel March - Bands of Mourning April - Vicious May - Fellowship of the Ring June - Dune Messiah July - Red Rising August - Howling Dark September - Demon in White October - Last Argument of Kings November - Shadow of the Gods December - Wind and Truth
Yeah you had a crazy year too!
@@Smitty1423 Sun Eater and Stormlight are just next level
your videos single handedly got me into fantasy lmao, best booktuber out there
Yo I love this that’s fire!
Love your energy man 😁 looking forwards to future videos
@AlexSmith-pn7hi thanks for the compliment!
Please create a 2024 top 10 countdown! Pleaseeeeee
I will!
Did u read stormlight before mistborn?
Nope I actually read Mistborn in 2023
So glad you’re enjoying Dungeon Crawler Carl. Currently listening to book 6, the series is just very fun.
Enjoyed it a lot can’t wait to continue the series!
For me: January: Red Seas Under Red Skies February: The Well of Ascension March: The Alloy of Law April: The Way of Kings May: Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians June: Edgedancer July: Kings of the Wyld August: Before They Are Hanged September: The Last Argument of Kings October: Lonesome Dove (best book I read in 2024) November: Dungeon Crawler Carl December: The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. So...somehow I don’t have Words of Radiance in my stats. That would probably take the place of something on this list lol.
Damn you had a great year! Good to see Dungeon Crawler Carl on that list haha
Wow such a great year of reading!! Loved hearing about your top books, we definitely have some in common as you will see, haha. Loved Legendborn, and can’t wait to read Wind and Truth as soon as I finish Rhythm of War! My top books from 2024 are as follows: January: Tress of the Emerald Sea February: The Hate U Give March: Six of Crows April: The Way of Kings May: Funny Story June: so hard (three 5 stars!!) Words of Radiance 😂 July: The Things We Cannot Say August: Remarkably Bright Creatures September: The God of the Woods October: Beartown November: hmm… enjoyment level? Butcher and Blackbird. Quality? O Caledonia December: Two Twisted Crowns? Only finished 2 books so far so not sure yet!
You had a great year as well! 2024 was 🔥🔥
@@Smitty1423so good!! I’m seeing more literary fiction here than expected, it’s giving fantasy a run for its money 😳😂
My top books of 2024: I finished Wheel of Time and they are now my favorite books of all time. Project Hail Mary ❤. The Will of the Many, Fourth Wing. Currently reading Jade City…🤞🏾
I gotta get started on Wheel of Time next year!
I started reading books in April with Red Rising April- Golden Son May- Lighrbringer June- Artificial Wisdom July/August- Elantris (I didn't like it, but it put me in a terrible reading slump and I read nothing else these two months) September- The Sword of Kaigen October- The Will of the Many November- The Bands of Mourning December-dunno yet, just started The Lost Metal and will be going to either The Way of Kings or The Shadow of the Gods next.
Thanks for putting down your list and giving me a heads up on Elantris!
Jan: A Fire Endless Feb: Ninth House March: (n/a) April: Fireborn - Flamefall (can’t choose lol) May: the whole Beartown trilogy (I have to listen to the audiobooks (all 3 of them) again RIGHT AFTER finishing these books, they killed me) June: My Dark Vanessa July: The Sword of Kaigen August: Things My Son Needs to Know about the World Sep: Yours Truly Oct: The Hunger Games Nov: The Final Empire Dec: The Hero of Ages
Damn you had a fire year too!
In fairness, I haven’t read the Sun Eater series yet (though it’s my next read), but that Red Rising original trilogy is still my favorite.
That first trilogy does go crazy
Try Digging for God, by Tom Hillman
