I love this sparring match, because it didn't do the usual "protag somehow wows them" cliche. Ippo lost, straight up. Nothing he did was enough to reach the World champ, let alone hit him. That's what it's like when you encounter a wall that is too early in your Journey to overcome

What happened in this spar was no surprise.... Dempsey's rhythm is readable, since it relies on bouncing momentum in order to get power... No need for a backstep for a counter.... Gonzales made that clear.... it's a weak technique by itself... can't wait to see if the new Dempsey may overcome that...

Kamagowa is both a great and horrible trainer. He's great for his wealth knowledge and his training ability. But he has let all of his fighters (ippo especially) incur so much brain damage in sparring. This one was out of his control, but his fighters regularly get ko'd or brutalized in sparring. The most realistic thing about this show, sparring is the main cause of CTE not the actual fighting.

Although it looks simple in how he just hit Ippo with jabs during the Dempsey roll, its actually higher level as he perfected the timing and rhythm of the roll. No matter if he's in your blind spot for some of the move, you know he'll resurface during the follow through of the punch. Time it right and Ricardo made the call

It says a lot about Date's match the Ricardo actually seemed a little interested after hearing Ippo pushed Date. We learn much later in the manga that Ricardo actually still remembers Ippo a bit years later and he's in sort of a "lonely at the top, can't experience the joy of boxing because he's so good" situation. Most of his opponents are so beneath him he not only doesn't try, he actually tries to HOLD BACK MORE.
