Much appreciated, cheers
Happy to hear that! 😄
This doesn’t need a makeover, it needs to grow in better conditions. Why are the leaves so dusty?
Do they grow in water
Yes they can be grown hydroponically
Do they grow in water
Do they grow in water
I never really liked these trees when I first started gaining an interest in bonsai. After watching several of your videos about them, I want one and can't find them at any of my local nurseries. 😢
Happy to hear I played a role in getting you interested in portulacaria afra 😉 Also here they are not available all the time, so I make sure to grab one whenever I see them somewhere. Now in summer they seem a bit more widely available in my area. Hope you will find one as well!
@@ThatBonsaiGuy I constantly keep my eyes open for them. Best wishes, stay well.
@@None2Lose you too!
Nice🎉
Thanks!
Mine has become the same
Nice work!
Thanks!
Thank you, great video. What type of soil are you using?
Thanks! The soil is a mixture of pumice and lava rock.
How many times a day water should be given for a bone Sai plant
It depends on the tree. Generally you should water when the top layer of the soil is dry. This normally is every 2 to 3 days. In summer it could be multiple times a day though.
one shitty think ... i am music producer and dj ... that high frequency sound at background is verry anoying
Yes I know sadly, switched mics since then 😅
@@ThatBonsaiGuy no problem, I stayed until the end of your video... it was really good. I'm wondering if you could help me with my Judas tree, which is still a seedling that hasn't been pruned into a bonsai. it is about 55 cm long and 1 cm thick at the bottom of the trunk
@@mateuszrybinski4716sure, how can I help you with it?
@@ThatBonsaiGuy I have 4 problems the first is the fact that I have no idea how to send you a photo of my seedling and it seems necessary to me secondly, I wonder if I cut the tree down about halfway, whether it will die... thirdly, breeding takes place on a sunny windowsill. I wonder if the tree will survive the winter at +18 degrees Celsius Fourth, the tree has brown things on the leaves... I don't really know what it is. can you help me with that?
@@mateuszrybinski4716For such a severe cut-back definitely wait until late winter, before the tree starts to flower. It will react better when it is still dormant. The species is fully hardy, it should be able to deal with temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius - best Google the species for details on how to best keep it over winter if you cannot keep it outside (but basically the coldest room you have alternatively, like an unheated basement or garage). For the spots on the leaves I would need a pic. In case you use Instagram you can send me a pic there: instagram.com/_thatbonsaiguy_/

How often do you water it? Ive killed one before but i wanna try again just worried it'll die again :(
I water when the top layer of the soil is dry. However, I switched to inorganic soil by now also for my Ming Aralias and since then they seem to do way better. I guess it is the better aeration.
Job well done 👏
Thank you! 😊
I just did it...pruned it and I feel so sad...looks so ugly...naked😔I cried for every branch😔I hope it will be ok...🙏
Ive got my eye on a benjamina at the moment, looks quite old, maybe 7-10yrs. Im wondering how you can get the tree to grow smaller leaves? Is it possible?
It is by defoliating the tree! However, ficus benjamina is one variety that does not react well to having all foliage removed at once. So only partially defoliate on benjamina, always leaving some leaves on branches
@@ThatBonsaiGuy thanks a lot
Cute little tree
I think so too!
Nice program material bonsai, thank you for sharing im here to support good luck Mr
Thanks!
Oh, tropical trees here, I subscribed 👍🏻
Happy to hear that!
also try Kanuba soil works well.
Thanks for the tip!
I'm exited to try this right away! Thank you, Ficus trees look so much better with aerial toots :)
I agree! :)
I was hoping you would have talked about the soil!!!
Oh, I should definitely make a video about the soil in the future!
How is this Ming doing ?
I gifted it to a friend, but still doing good 😊
Can you get a bare branch to grow some leaves?
Yes, most ficus varieties can regrow leaves from bare branches (as long as the branch itself is not dead)
I repotted mine recently, did youre droop for a while after the repot?
Yes it was a bit droopy afterwards
@@ThatBonsaiGuy well that’s reassuring! Thank you , mine is droopy and I was worried I messed up something or moved it into bad soil, glad to know it’s just adjusting^^
I m so grateful you uploaded this video...I was so curious to see how that wounded root will look like...I really suffered when you cut it in that video😁😁nice progress..less baby roots but ...brings hope 😊And....I was not prepared to see a new "crime"😂😂was praying here..."plz don't "😂😂Question about the root you just cut.. : is there any chance to plant it and something to grow from there? I mean...root looking strong but if the wound will dry....is there any chance to develop from there a little tree?😁regards from Spain 🤗
I actually never tried to grow a new tree from a cut ficus microcarpa root, but I would guess that it could work! This species does bud back very well so new growth could develop around where the root was cut off 😉
@@ThatBonsaiGuy I just hope that root didn't end up in the trash 😊why don't you try to plant it? Bring some new baby buds to life🤗Thank you for the reply🙏🤍
yaaay....this is what I was looking for....There is still hope for me!!!😊
Woooow ..he just wanna grow under the table🤭🤭enjoy your new life little fellow🤗
My comment here just disappeared...anyway...will write it again...my little buddy is almost 4 years old,is strong enough and always green but I never pruned it. Has got long branches like yours and a bunch of leaves in the top...also a few little branches underneath. I lost an older one just because I tried to give it a shape and now I am afraid for the one I have. Will you promise that I will not lose my tree if I prune it? 😊thank you
If your tree is overall healthy, a prune should not harm it, but generally lead to healthier growth. Just look for information on how to prune and give it a go! 😄 My tip, start with a light prune to get a feeling for it first 😉
@@ThatBonsaiGuy ohhh...thank youuuu so much🙏if only I could save those leaves life! I will try with only one branch.. let's see how it will react😁😊
omg.... my heart is aching every time you cut...a root or a branch ...leaves😊😊I know you know what you re doing...you are awesome and just subscribed 😁 but I just suffer in here😊🤭thank you for the tips 🙏
It gets easier with time! 😉😄
@@ThatBonsaiGuy please....see my other comment🙏help for my little friend...I feel sorry to cut his leaves🙏🤗
What fertalizer do you use? And how much how often do you use it? Very hard to find info of this for indoor bonsai lol😂
Tbh I simply use a balanced allrounder liquid fertilizer for indoor plants from the garden center, nothing specific for bonsai 😅
And how often roughly?
@@tony7777777tony The liquid fertilizer I use every one to two weeks during growth season and maybe once a month or even less during dormancy.
I would have cut the bulbs 2'" below the base of the plant. In fact, did that with mine and it looks so much better! After finishing the vid, I see you mostly did that.
I got one of these and it has awesome twirling roots that look like it’s dancing. I’m worried about one of them because it isn’t reaching the soil. Will that root die? I’m new to the hobby
Yes, if the root does not reach the soil it will dry up and die back to a point that is still supported by the other roots
@@ThatBonsaiGuy Do you know if it can be saved by getting it into some soil or is it too late?
@@Kyle_Schaffif it has not dried up yet you can simply cover it with soil
i cut the top off my gingseng and rooted it as a large cutting. had a hard time finding a non ginseng ficus locally. so i improvised haha. nice break down video. new sub n thumbs up
That sounds awesome 😎
I have always wondered, why not dip the plant in water that should easily remove soil from the root, rather than using hand/ any other tools which does damage the roots.
I guess mixing both makes sense: First carefully removing the majority of the soil manually, and then washing off the rest by dipping the roots in water.
Enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Happy to hear that!
I like the look of that Ficus bonsai as it looks right now. Could you leave it like it is or do you have to prune it back in the near future? James
I could also leave it like this, but it will get really bushy really fast I fear 😅
Thank you. Beautiful trees I bought one and love so much. I would love to know more about their spiritual meaning if you share Look forward to see your next video about that. 🌈
Thanks! I never before looked into their spiritual meaning. Definitely gonna check up on that 😃
Don’t use scissors mate it will crush the cambium and can deffo lead to the steam dieing back
Interesting, what would you recommend using to prune instead of scissors?
@@ThatBonsaiGuy a nice sharp pair of secateurs, clean secateurs will do the job really well and it will not damage the cambium layer! 👍🏼
Whats the next step after this? I managed to get these exact roots on 3 ficusses only when i put them in soil they all died sadly..
I will wait some more weeks for the roots to get more established still. Then I will pot them in soil, making sure I keep the soil more in the moist side in the beginning to make the transition easier for the roots.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy ok 👌🏻 key here is wait longer then ill try. Have 1 new propagated ficus in water atm
Neat! I was surprised to see what young Portulacaria Afra look like. Can't wait to see it mature
Yes, me too! 😉
How did you choose the size of your pot? I'm repotting for the first time in 2 years and it's in a plastic oval shape 5 inch pot. I'm confused on the type of pot that works better and how to determine the size. Please advice
Regarding shape I usually simply go with what I find is fitting to the tree aesthetically. The material of the pot can have an effect on your tree. A plastic pot might hold moisture a bit longer than an unglazed clay pot - so simply choose what fits best to the general needs of your tree. Regarding size a safe bet is to go one size up from the current pot. This way the roots again have enough room to grow for another year or two.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy thanks for responding. When using an unglazed clay put is it necessary to soak it first like terra cotta pots to prep the pot before use? Is the depth of the pot extremely important or is a shallow pot better?
@@kbm4409it is not necessary to soak the pot before use (however I like to soak the freshly repotted tree when I water for the first time after repotting). How shallow a pot you choose again depends on the look you want to achieve for your tree. For a cascading style you would use a narrow and deep pot, for other styles you would rather go for a more shallow pot. In case of doubt go with what looks best to you!
I recommend glass / tank with plenty of light enclosure for the ficus cuttings to grow best
Yes! Anything that mimics a tropical climate really jump starts any ficus cutting 😄
@@ThatBonsaiGuy ........... like a Greenhouse shelf
Nice work, look forward to the ficus over rock
Thanks, that one will be coming soon 😉
How old is that ficus cutting in water? I’ve had around 4 in water for almost a month now and I think 5 in soil and nothing have happened to those in water yet, I don’t know how the ones in soil are doing but there is some new leaf growth on them, I don’t want to disturb the roots if there is any. I’ve heard that Ficus Microcarpa are slow to grow roots from cuttings though
Mine has been in water for roughly 2 months now. They are extremely slow when it comes to growing roots on cuttings. New leaves should be a sign that there are some roots developing, but yes, it takes a lot of time 😄
@@ThatBonsaiGuy Okay, thanks! There’s still hope then😃
That pink tree looks like a Kwanzan Cherry tree. I have one blooming right now in front of my house in Frankfort, Kentucky in the US. It's such a beautiful tree!
Yes, it's truly amazing!
Love it
