End of a short life. A male barn owl kills the offspring of another....
This video shows the uncompromising side of "survival of the fittest" - a male barn owl - not the father of the chicks (he disappeared from the scene - reason unknown - a few weeks earler) had been hanging around in the tree each night gradually being more and more bold, and was intent on posession of the box as a roost, and probably trying to court the female in the process.
He entered the nest the night BEFORE this video, but was quickl put off - see "Fiesty Chick" video.
Just 24 hours later he is back and this time is determined to "get rid" of the two chicks - which are not his.

The "other" female (is in "Curious Owl" vid) returns for first time in months whilst "mum" is out hunting, leaving the 2 chicks vulnerable. After five minutes (presumably expecting the mum to return) she then starts eyeing the chicks - no doubt with intent of doing them harm because they are not hers........

Barn Owl lands right on camera ! then chased off by Crow........ ...but doesnt seem bothered by the encounter...........

This pair may never have heard thunder before - or at least not for a year - so they took off in a hurry - but soon recovered their composure.....

Revised opinion - this is a MALE intruder that fights the female of the existing pair.

[edit 19th august] An established pairing is challenged by a stronger female (I originally thought - now sure it was a male) newcomer, resulting in a full on confrontation between the two female birds. The punchline is that the winner - instead of staying to start a family - disappeared the next day not to be seen again - until mid-summer when she (he) returns to cause trouble..... (see "Fiesty...
