In 1980, when the first boat was nearing completion, the old master boat builder and boss of the yard, Che Ali, asked me one day, what I intended to name the boat. I proposed the word Naga. He objected on the grounds that “Dragon” was Chinese. I pointed out that the sail is of Chinese origin and the looks of the boat seen as a silhouette resembles the wings of a dragon. The same afternoon when two rainbows appeared after a shower, the son, Hassan, with whom I worked together, said: “Why don’t you give it a nice Malay name: Pelangi?” I replied: “Then it will be “Naga Pelangi” “ and that was it and everybody was happy.

@@MultiNakhoda Ah, nice story. Glad I asked. About the sail, there was a big heated debate among historians and anthropologists on origin of the sail shape. The world may associate the sail and also the word "junk" with Chinese, but many believe it's actually originally Malay or Malayo-Polynesians. Junk is anglicized form of Jong. And naga isn't necessarily Chinese. Japanese, Malay, Chinese, Indians, all cultures touched by Buddhism and Hinduism in East Asia and South Asia have Nagas. For some it's snake, for some it's dragon, for some it's a semi-divine female deity of semi-serpent semi-human form. Malays also have many legends of dragons, it's a giant snake-like water creature.

@@AnasSuhaimi Yes, the origin of the sail is shrouded in the mist of time. Probably the Chinese picked it up from Austronesian sailors who operated their boats in Southeast Asia. The people of the „Malay Archipelago“, are definitely responsible for giving the name „Jong“ (Javanese) from which the Portuguese and later the English derived „Junco“ and „Junk“. But it was the Chinese who made it so popular that everybody associates the „Fully Battened Lug Sail“ with the Chinese culture. But yes, the greatest seafarers ever sailing the oceans were the Austronesian like the Protomalay and the Polynesians. This special technique, building with wooden dowels and „Kulit Gelam“ caulking bark might date back thousands of years to when the Austronesian sailors settled the Malay Archipelago (Protomalay). I write about this on my website „www.naga-pelangi.com“. Nāga is a Sanskrit word. In Hindu culture the Nāga is the snake-shaped spear of Lord Shiva which he throws to haunt evildoers and the like. All over SE-Asia, in Burmese, Thai, Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer and Pre-Islamic Malay culture we find the Nāga, a mythical creature, half snake, half dragon in various forms incorporated into the regional cultures. For the pre-islamic Malays, as you point out, the Nāga was a deity living in the sea and was held in great esteem by the seafarers. Sacrifices were offered to her for an auspicious journey. The figurehead of their craft frequently had the shape of a Nāga. One can see old wooden carved Nāga-shaped figureheads in Malaysian museums. It was so important for them that the captain, the „Nakhoda“ took it off the bow and carried it home when leaving the ship. Due to the strict picture ban of Islam, this detailed carving was reduced to a stylized carving in Islamic times. The figurehead of a Malay Pinas is called "gobel" and one may guess the old Nāga still shining through. The Naga Pelangi has such a stylized „gobel“. For lack of another word, the modern Malays adopted the word „Naga“ to name the Chinese dragon. All this I did not know when building my first „Naga Pelangi. Then the word only meant „Rainbow Dragon“. When I built the second one, I knew about the other aspects of the word, so the new Naga Pelangi is not only the „Rainbow Dragon“ but represents the whole spectrum of the ancient word.

All the people With whom I built the first boat in 1980 and ithe second one in 2005 are dead. If you wish to meet a boat builder, you will have to travel to Pulau Duyong in Kuala Terengganu and see if there is anybody alive who still knows how to build one of these boats.

Hello, glad you liked it. Terengganu is not an active boat building place any more. No chance to build a big vessel there. Indonesia is still building big wooden boats on the lines of the old cargo ships: the Pinisis. You can find that in the net. My boat is for sale. My boat needed 50 tons. Now the price is about 20.000,- RM per imperial ton. The wages have increased considerably as well. My boat was built with 30.000 work hours, not counting my own work during 6 years.

@@Kim-cj2ds The word English word „Junk“ is derived from the Portuguese word „junco“, probably coming from the Malay (Austronesian) word jong "ship, large boat", probably from Javanese „djong“. The word is usually applied to ships sailing with the Chinese fully battened lug sail which is commonly called „Junk sail“. When I sailed in Indonesia, I did not see any „Junk sail“. I do not know of a tradition of using the fully battened lug sail in Indonesia / Java. They build great wooden boats in Indonesia…but the „Junk sail“ to my knowledge is an originally Chinese invention.

Very good idea! Sure, the charter boat Naga Pelangi could be converted into a cargo carrying boat, just rip out all the cabins, bathrooms etc. If you like to do that, no problem, just buy the boat and go ahead...

Thank you for your interest...yes, all carpenters use similar techniques...but boat builders sometimes have their own...do you know another place in the world where they join the planks with wooden dowels and separate the planks with caulking bark? I would be very interested to know other places. I thought that technique was unique in the Malay cultural area. The Terengganu boat builders do NOT steam bend the planks, they fire-bend them as one can see in the film...steam bending is done in a closed box type container and Chenggal can NOT be steam bend.

Back in the days many Malay/south east asian seafarers work with the western people,some are slaves to those wesrerners too..the one who help Ferdinand magellan circumnavigate was a malay too,they call him Enrique the black,so maybe we change ship building knowledge with the west..chinese also adapt the junk shipbuilding from southeast asia...and another interesting fact.. there was a group of malay slaves work with british captain call John Davie..and later these malays slave mutiny and became pirates in english sea

(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C4%81ga) Nagas are divine, semi-divine deities, or a semi-divine race of half-human half-serpent beings that reside in the netherworld related to god Shiva. In South East Asia the Naga became a snake like goddess of the ocean in some parts. The old, pre Muslim Malays used a carved Naga as figurehead on their boats. (naga-pelangi.com/nage-the-name/) The design of the boat is a mix of the cultures that came to Malaysia: Malay, Indian, Chinese and Western. We tried to take care. Lead is poisonous. Nobody ate the lead, nobody drank it, it was too hot. Lead melts @ 327 °C therefore we were able to use a wood fire (about 800 °C) to melt it. Since lead needs temperatures of 1.749 °C (boiling point) to vaporize, a temperature we could not achieve by burning an open wood fire, nobody was - luckily - inhaling any fumes. Therefore we survived. The “fumes” you saw swirling in the video was smoke from the burning wood.
