    Another fascinating enjoyable video. Great to learn a bit about Supraphon and I totally agree about how Philips cracked consistent great sonics combined with great manufacturing quality control. I would be grateful if you could tell me a bit about the photo you included of Ansermet conducting in Victoria Hall, I have previously seen a picture of the early arrangement using a small platform in front of the stage when it was just the Decca Tree but your picture shows the later arrangement when Roy Wallace added 2 outriggers. I was wondering if it was from the back cover of the Nutcracker US cover? I have never been able to pin down when RW added the outriggers so any extra info you know about this picture would be much appreciated.

      That photo I acquired form this website www.rts.ch/archives/1940/audio/saison-osr-1941-26146315.html The article is about the 1941 premier of the Orchestra but I have a feeling the photo is later as you mentioned. I'm listening now to the french voice article and my french is limited can hear about Ansermet and the orchestra but nothing about the outriggers :)

      @@VinylBliss Thanks ever so much for the link. It is a really helpful picture even though it is nothing to do with the 1940's as outriggers most likely were added by Wallace after the Kingsway experiments somewhere between 1958 and 1960. The very early picture I have with the tree on its own is from above but much further away . So when combined with this closer one from eye level I should be able to work out most of the arrangement of OSR when recording. I was terrible at French but I forgot to mention that I recall oiseau is pronounced waz oh. Hope your NM streak continues!

    Excellent video as usual ! Thanks Note : It is normal that you couldn't find the conductor's name on the Supraphon record. It says "bez dirigent" on the cover, which means... "Without conductor" !

    Check out the matrix number on the Philips LPs for the country codes. If it has 670 it is a Dutch pressing.. I have a lot of French Philips and even though some labels say France the pressings have Dutch codes. The French Philips pressings which have the 380 country code have a very distinctive and wide raised edge around the labels.

      Thank you for this information! After checking: all other 4 have the "670" designation. The Disc in questions has: Side 1 : 44 9500 243 1Y = 51 (2 or 3) 1 Side 2: 9500 243 2 1 520 .. I'm guessing the 520 is the country code?

    i have a great number of DG pressings, especially large tulip, i have very few problems with them sonically except some of the later ones can be a little crackly sometimes, which is why Classjcal music fans led the charge for CD back then.

      I find the large tulips to sound the best overall also. some are really great but I have a hard time finding ones in flawless condition. Yes digital was inevitable also even on vinyl digital pressings from the standpoint of providing regional pressings with a truely 1 to 1 duplication.

    Great to see somebody supporting European recordings here on the toob, look out for a label called "L'Oiseau Lyre" (lyre bird), absolutely brilliant sounding recordings, great performances and dead silent vinyl pressings, also Decca's budget series "The World of Great Composers", amazing sound and performances.

      Absolutely, I'm with you on both counts. L'Oiseau Lyre is top notch. All the records I have heard on that label I would consider to be audiophile grade in my opinion. "The word of " also can sound superb but I find the UK pressings to be best. They really are great value though as many can be found for one dollar :)

    Another great video, really good each time to see you succeeding trying out different styles for these videos. I just want to pass on my thoughts about the Grieg/Dvorak ASMF as I have the same pressing, Oval Argo design without groove, which coincides with the tax code JT on the deadwax. Decca produced Vinyl from this period often has a lovely detailed but warm quality which I suspect is due to a sweet spot between the first big improvement in cutting heads while retaining a few bits of older equipment in the recording/mastering chain. Unfortunately the inner plastic liners around that time are particularly prone to progressive bonding to the vinyl over time, especially rapid in the moist UK climate and over time can raise the sound floor a lot. I would recommend for the ASMF the precaution of either adding a further new liner inside like the Nagaoka style or using a new inner sleeve to maintain the sound quality.

      That is some great insight and makes sense about the sweet spot for decca. My version has: ZRG-3401-IG on the deadwax , no groove. Yes that plastic inner sleeve especially the paper /plastic FFRR combo has given some real issues with the plastic almost congealing to the record. I have found that in extreme cases the application of 1/4 solution (%99 rubbing alcohol to distilled water) spraying it on the record laying flat and letting it sit for a few minutes then rubbing it around with a good quality microfiber cloth can get rid of the residue.

      @@VinylBliss thanks it’s really useful to hear an alternative to my current strategies which are either don’t buy or if mild case buy and use enzyme record cleaner for usually a 10% reduction in noise floor. Yes my Grieg copy is exactly the same, I’ve also got the Equivalent pressing of ASMF’s Bartok Concerto Percussion which sadly has prominent noise floor for the first movement but still sonically excels against my 1978 Decca pressing of the same record.

    Your correct about the Decca/London Philips pressings of the pre-digital early 1980's. Phiilps, and DG, had the very best, quietest pressings of all major labels. One of the reasons that Philips vinyl was so quiet, was that they practiced what was called de-horning. That process entailed smoothing out the stamper metal parts to eliminate the sharpest edges, which might result in ticks. Audiophiles of the time sneered at that practice, cause it could also eliminate the highest frequencies and hence, audiophiles of the day contended, the air of the venue and sharpest transients. Personally, I find Philips pressings of Decca/London/Argo's to be really nice, if different from earlier British pressings. In significant ways, they combine the best aspects of both companies. The ones to be careful of are the final years of British Decca pressings [approximately 1979-1981]. Vinyl quality dropped off of the cliff. They tend to be truly awful. Noisy beyond belief. Also, Arrau is pronounced "ah-rahw", rhyming with "now".

      Thank you for this valuable information. It makes sense. I agree about the ductch pressed deccas: really good just different from normal decca. I know the Blue/Teal type label for the digital deccas seem to be very noisy and crackly. I don't usually pick up many digital vinyl discs but those I have learned to steer well clear of.

      I absolutely agree, I think I have been taking him for granted. The more I listen it seems to me he possesses a special kind of intimate nuance and fluidity. I just picked up his recording of schubert sonatas and german dances also on philips, it is just excellent.

    23:42 just wondering what is your system the audiophile in Japan tend to to use compressor drive(CD) with bass combo. Depends on the CD you might be too hot. The only compsrable high mid in morden system in term of precieve sound frequenct might be atc, but it might be too articulate like morden syst3ms

      @TheSagitis I am using Either Planar Headphones (What I use to judge the records in these videos) or a normal speaker/transducer combo for casual listening: 6 speakers with 2 subs and 2 transducers) but really I feel like the speaker system is too forgiving in terms of judging the absolute quality of vinyl, and pressing it sounds pretty and all but everything sounds pretty decent on speakers so I use the headphones to get a more accurate view, for me anyway. It might very well be the Japanese hifi systems in the 70's were bass heavy to begin with. I have read that the Japanese pressings have less bass to enable listeners to not disturb their neighbors but I don't really believe that. They still madesome excellent balanced records, some f the RCA's, and sonys sound very balanced to me.

    Looks like you have a later Dutch repress of the Mozart Eine Kleine Nachtmusik on Argo. The earlier original British pressing to my ears is better,. As a general rule the Dutch repressings of the London/Decca and Argo records (which started when Polygram bought Decca around the 1979-80 period) are inferior to the earlier British pressings done in New Malden. You can tell the Dutch pressings which say Made in Holland and have a raised rounded ring around the outer part of the label. The MHS Hummel piano concertos come from Chandos (according to the back cover you show). Stephen Hough (pronounced Huff), is also a MacArthur fellow.

      @larrytoy4235 Thank you for that, I will have to list those corrections in the next episode. I did not notice the Dutch pressing at all, I just assumed it was a UK pressing. Yes I find the Dutch Decca pressings to have a bit less bass but also be very quiet and detailed, they seem to really sing with female operatic performances but yeah for full on orchestral they don't seem to carry the weight. I have a Solti Mahler 2 on Dutch pressing and although very detailed and nuanced sometimes it lacks that ooomph that I expect from Solti.

      @johnkreutz3207 I have the Gershwin (orch+piano) and Liszt Piano sets. I have been neglecting the Gershwin set for no reason at all. I just put it on, it sounds fantastic, very clean and quiet with a really nice sound stage...10min later...WOW Excellent indeed!! I should have put this in the video, I can't remember though how much it cost, a bit more I think. I would love to have the Ravel Set.

    Thanks for another fun informative journey through these neglected labels. It’s great to hear a more about Vox but I don’t think any MHS made it over to the UK. I agree about Hummel being wonderful and would recommend keeping an eye out for the Melos Ensemble’s Hummel Septet D minor / Quintet E flat on LOiseau Lyre which has glorious mid sixties Decca sound, wonderful performance and usually very cheap. Most of the ASMIF on Dutch Decca vinyl sounds great but the quality control was a bit iffy at times. In the UK it is fairly easy to pick up their Argo recordings on earlier English pressings with the major bonus that the legendary Ted Burkett mastered all of them around that time but the Dutch pressings despite being wafer thin are awesome value.

      @analogueanorak1904 Thank you for that recommendation. After researching I do not think I have ever seen that Hummel disc. Those mid sixties L'Oiseau Lyre seem to be very rare over here. I seem to come across the more recent purple label (often in mint condition). It is a shame about the MHS not making over the pond but I suppose you guys got the UK pressed World Record Club editions which I hear can be very good.

      Yes the WRC can be wonderful but do tend to have a high noise floor. As far as my latest project there is going to be a further delay, I’m going to have to reshoot as the striped shirt I chose to wear is producing weird psychedelic effects which would be fine if I was doing a Velvet Underground review but not particularly appropriate for Julian Bream!

Before you re shoot possibly make sure you are viewing the video at an increment of %100, %50 or %25, I have found in photos that the moire effect is sometimes alleviated when viewing at full or half ratio. Either way, no rush at all the viewers can wait. It sounds interesting!!

    Thanks for the video. MHS especially the late ones are a great value. Library sales can be a good place to buy a bag full of MHS Readers Digest for a dollar a bag on the last day. I have some VOX box sets in quadraphonic (as well as others). The sound and dynamics are superb and encoded in QS. QS quad can be decoded with modern dolby surround. The quad in these recoding is the best implementation of quad for classical I have heard so far. Fremer has an old interview on analog planet with Marc Aubort who did a lot of vox,vanguard and nonesuch recordings. Thanks for not being a disc snob. Most of my top classical LPs are $1. P.S. It would be extremely interesting to get a hold of these long forgotten engineers.

      @TrueStereo- Absolutely, I have been tucking away almost any Vox Quadraphonic I come across in the hopes of one day setting up a quad system. It is amazing how many are still in mint shape after all these years. Marc Aubort sadly passed away last year. He was legendary. I will check for that interview with Fremer sounds interesting. I have not had a lot of luck with library sales, the ones I come across across are coated with that hard PVC? plastic and fairly beat up. I will keep an eye out though.

      @@VinylBliss Yes, the VOX sets are usually in good shape and can be found often unopened in shrink wrap. The quad releases were some of the last in the mid 80s. I find the Slatkin/St. Louis Symphony QS to be the best.

    I notice you feature an SAE cartridge in your video intro. I bought a couple of these NOS a few years back (an "E" an and an "LT"). Great sounding cartridges and a bargain at the price I paid (which of course I now can't remember!).

      @ClassicsAndVinyl Yes I missed the boat on the LT and was just able to get the 1000e. Pretty great sounding for $100 and it is surprising the suspension is still fine after all these years. I do quite like it, it seems detailed but easy to listen to. My overall experience with MC is limited so I'm wondering what is next. After it wears down I'm thinking about doing a retip to ruby or boron cantilever with maybe a micro line. What do you think, would it worth it for this particular generator or save up for something better?

      @@ClassicsAndVinyl Thank you, Fair enough. I did read that then SAE1000/ Adcom were made by Excel and have the same generator and internals as the the current Hana SH line. Considering the price of an exotic retip, it seems brand new would be better.

      @eliasmodernell3348 Lol what do you mean? The digital version is only better when they mess up the pressing or use inferior vinyl. A Good vinyl version is always better sounding than a digital reproduction if the original source was recorded in analog.

    Some really awesome pickups here. The more time goes by the more I have grown to appreciate the mercury golden imports series. Just a note on that first mercury record, that's actually a 1963 recut compilation of SR90195 from 1959, with the Russian Easter Overture added from SR90265. Mercury did a few of these compilations of earlier recordings in the mid 60s. That brightness you're hearing might be from the diminished bass that was cut in order to fit more material on the LP.

      @ClassicsAndVinyl That is great ! I would say any of the living baroque series (if in great condition) will yield excellent results. In my experience with them, I have not heard one yet that is less than superb !

Can I say, without being insulting that you need to brush up on the pronunciation of composers and instrumentalists? Some of them are way off. For example: Max Bruch is pronounced “brook”. You don’t need to know French or German to find the correct pronunciations. Just google it!

    Great video. I love the Golden Import from McPhee. Amazing composition. Did you check out the site of Arturo Salvatore. Interesting stuff about early pressings from Mercury, RCA, Decca etc. Cheers.

I remember him saying he prefers the Golden imports to the originals. I do trust his ears. All the discs that are on his list that I happen to have are very very good.

    A great selection that was right up my street. Thanks for the shout out and for continuing to put out great content. I totally agree about Living Baroque consistently high quality recordings and pressings. I picked up a ton of Neville Marriner and the ASMIF on that label, doesn’t have the collectibility of the Argo label but all very good. You’ve pretty much got all the great Bonynge recordings but keep an eye out for a copy of Tales of Hoffmann a great James Lock recording from Victoria Hall post Ansermet that sounds an absolute treat, quite a lot of dialogue though so highlights version may get more plays. The Patineurs disc is superb but for a completely OTT tubetastic early Decca treatment look out for the Martinon Israel Phil where they turn up the tympani at the beginning to a Spinal Tap setting of 11!

    Thanks for the video. Came across a good sized collection of classical at goodwill today. Mostly small European labels I have never heard of from late 70s early 80s. Sound is very impressive. Less production and more heart can lead to wonderful sounds.

      @samuelbruce1425 Hi Samuel. Yes for these reviews I feel the need to listen with headphones to give a proper judgment. My near field speaker set up seems to smooth over some flaws and has such a different and forgiving feel. I am much more critical with headphones. As of now my current path is: SAE1000e (HOMC) > Grace G704 Unipivot tonearm > Technics SP10MK2 > EAR 834P (Clone) phono stage > Topping L30 Headphone amp > Hifiman Sundara Headphones. I am happy with the setup but in truth I am longing for a shibata stylus profile again as I feel they give a more realistic presence on amazing sounding discs at the price of being a bit unforgiving on average sounding discs. It is a bit of a pain to change and setup on this tonearm so I will wait to wear out this SAE before changing back again. The SAE is quite nice, pleasant and very good on vocals but I feel bit laid back for minty crisp classical.

    In English Bizet is pronounced Bee -Zaa not Biz et, Haydn Hi -Den not Hay den and Handel is frenetic not Hen Dal.

AND DO PLAY ITS CHORAL RELIGIOUS RECORDINGS.They are wonderfully meaningful, specially in times as these. 3- Love me those Sarabande discs though, just and justly as that Leon's historic recording. ONE quite balanced indeed. 4-Anyway, a belated Happy Easter , Mill and buy your house adds included back to Vinyl UNbliss for what a tangled web of tall tales those ''BOQUERINI'' pronouncing bots might be weaving next . 5-...Shema!!!

    The "ß" in Große is not a B. It's call an eszett and is pronounced as an S. So, Große is pronounced "Grow-suh".

    good overview on these titles. Japan is a hidden treasure trove of great vinyl pressings for all types of music. For the Classical Japan market DG titles were pressed early on by Nippon Phonogram. After the Polygram buyout of DG, Philips and Decca, all of these labels were pressed by Polydor KK. All are very quiet pressings. For the DG titles, the EQ'd and compressed tapes to cut the lacquers were supplied by DG - Hanover. The Japan pressings have a very similar sound to the Hanover Germany DG pressings, or DG UK pressings but quieter vinyl. None have any dynamics or great imaging. Take a pass too on the Columbia records pressed by CBS/Sony Japan. Very quiet pressings but sonically not too good. For Classical titles available in Japan the titles to really seek out with excellent sonics are the London/Decca catalog titles pressed by King Records in Japan. They are equal to or in some cases superior sonically to their Decca UK counterparts. For true sonic blockbusters, look for the King Laboratory Standard series titles. King Records cut these lacquers from the Decca master tapes with all compression and EQ removed from the signal chain. There were 40 or 45 of these Laboratory standard titles released by King in Japan. All I have heard are sonic blockbusters. The Beethoven 9th mentioned early on is not too good. No matter who cut and pressed it getting the whole 9th on one LP is asking for poor sonics (not really enough room on one LP to fit the whole 9th on it). The grooves have to be highly compressed to make room for the extra recording time. Toshiba Musical Industries (later to become Toshiba-EMI after the giant British firm bought an interest in the Toshiba) also issued almost the complete EMI catalog. These are normally pretty good. But the EMI titles to really watch for are the special runs Toshiba-EMI made for the DAM club (Daiichi Audio Members club) in Japan. DAM was a national audiophile group in Japan who contracted with the major labels to make audiophile lacquer cuts and pressing runs on a number of titles from the EMI catalog. Almost all of these were made with lacquers cut at 45 RPM, so are 2 disc sets. Sonically all of these are superb. For the Philips label, early on these were pressed by Victor Music. Later the pressing contract went to Nippon Phonogram. The Nippon Phonogram pressings are really good. More so if a person US cleans them.

      @@VinylBliss NP. I lived over in Japan for > 1.5 years so my eyes were opened to what was available over there. King did some blockbuster titles on their Laboratory series. These completely blow away any Decca UK pressing of the same title. A few that come to mind are the Beethoven 7 with Solti /CSO, a few Ansermet/OSR Stravinsky pieces and the Brahms Piano Con. 1 with Metha and Rubinstein. Look for GXP catalog number prefixes. A bit beyond the scope of classical on vinyl but East Wind (Jazz label in JPN) recorded a number of titles in the US at famous jazz clubs and issued them under the East Wind label in Japan. Many were cut at 45 RPM. A few were cut direct to disc. Sonically these are all spectacular. All were pressed by Nippon Phonogram on super quiet vinyl.

    That was great, your videos are going from strength to strength and the move from voice over is going so well I doubt you will be going back. I learnt a lot from this video which is useful as Japanese’s pressings just randomly appear and can be very affordable. Great intro and totally agree with your views on Michael from POP’s masterful long form video Decca overview. Your enthusiasm for the Berlioz was very infectious so I’ve got an affordable UK pressed version on the way now, will let you know what it sounds like. I agree with your overview about King Decca wide band/narrow band sound quality. Looking forward to the next instalment from your off piste classical collecting adventures far away from the safety of the TAS and Salvatore lists!

I know you warned me video would take even more time to edit but I guess I needed to find out for myself :). I'm glad you picked up that Berlioz! I am quite curious as to the sound of a UK pressed Columbia, I'm sure it will be good. I used a translation app on my phone and received fairly useless results so I abandoned the effort. I recently tried Google translation on the text next the SX74 sound logo on the back of the Berlioz / Boulez album. The translation reads: "SX-74 sound is the world's first successful commercialization of the latest cutting head "SX-74" developed by West German company Neumann, a drive amplifier with a peak outputof 1KW, and the CBS/Sony engineering team. This is the ``Garandy mark of sound'' thatcan be seen on specially selected records made from carefully selected excellent recording sources through the combination of Direct Plating." So It looks like they did some kind of direct metal mastering on the Japanese Sony pressing.

      @@VinylBliss Your voiceover videos are great too and with you trying out different approaches and deciding what works best I’m sure you will get the balance right. I’ve only got one classical Columbia Copland conducts Rodeo/Billy the Kid LSO UK pressing, incredibly transparent. It was from when I first started collecting classical and slavishly followed Salvatore’s list as gospel which he clearly specifies not to do! As a consequence I disregarded most classical Columbia despite absolutely loving Duke Ellingtons Columbia output from the 50s. The Japanese cutting technique may be a red herring as I’ve noticed the Boulez Berlioz was recorded by 2 of Columbia’s best engineers including one who also recorded most of Miles Davies legendary albums. So once it’s arrived and I’ve cleaned and played will let you know.

      @@analogueanorak1904 the UK pressings might very well be some of the best pressing for Columbia from the 6 eye / 2 eye era? Most of the ones I hear that are domestically printed sound pretty decent but usually leave something to be desired on the loud parts and are mostly a bit too noisy. It is a shame because it feels like there is a lot more on the tapes to reveal and usually it seems like the recording philosophy was fairly natural in approach. If the UK plant used good cutter heads and pressed to better quality vinyl they might be the best ones to look out for. Looking forward to hearing your judgments on you copy in the mail, fingers crossed!

      @@VinylBliss I’m only working from a small sample but I am getting an impression that the UK pressed classical Columbia records around the late 60’s and early 70’s seem to suffer more from variable quality than their pressings in other genres such as Jazz and Rock which I have nearly always found to be fantastic. The Boulez sounds good but not exceptional enough to overcome the limitations of the pressing so your initial video wondering whether the Japanese pressing is the best may be correct partly due to the unique cutting head approach used combined with better overall quality. I did notice the deadwax on my Columbia Copeland/Rodeo UK pressing which is fantastic was different from that on the Boulez/Berlioz and the Copeland/Appalacia which have issues with handwritten details rather than the usual stamped info. so I will keep this in mind when next time I give a Columbia UK classical pressing a go.

      @@analogueanorak1904 This is interesting. I can say "almost" all US/CAN Columbia pressings that I have come across seem to suffer in some way, they are good but not quite the full package. Sometimes it is hard to say what exactly is missing but something seems to be lacking. For UK pressings I will say in the small few that I have The Deutsche Grammophons don't seem to be better than their German counterparts. the RCA red seal UK pressings for the few that I have sound quite good and I would say probably would be better than the US pressings and on thicker more quite vinyl.

      That is an interesting thought. It would explain the random 2 disc set with very little info. Does your copy have the 3 people with with brown wood panel background? If so I'm seeing they both have Concerto In C Major For Flute, Harp And Orchestra K.299 but the timings seem to be different, not sure if that is just a cut point difference or different performance altogether.
