How passive is passive income? I took a break from my piano teacher side hustle #tptseller
Thank you....this is very helpful! You bring as much clarity as possible to a heap of confusion. I'm a returning student. I remember how discouraging it was the first time I picked up an easy piano book in a music store. I tend to stick to the general labels like early or late intermediate. I wish that when I was a kid a million years ago there had been books like the Faber's supplements (pre-time, Funtime, etc). It's nice that I can grab a Big Time book (or Alfred Premier 5) and feel confident that I can handle it.
Well said. I remember with the Faber supplemental books first came out. They were revolutionary! My students complain when they can't find the exact song they want to learn in the exact level--but they don't know how spoiled they are with all of the choices out there for pianists these days 😂
Hal Leonard often uses “Five Finger Piano” and “Beginning Piano Solo” for a lot of Disney/Pop music both are easier than big note, but I’m still not sure which one is easiest.
Good point! HL does a little better job with their classification. Five-Finger Piano is the easiest, but unfortunately there is often quite a jump in difficulty moving up to Beginning Piano Solo. But it's something! Thanks for sharing
@@TheTattooedPianoTeacher ok thanks so much!
Thank you for this review as my new transfer students came with this series. I feel I can confidently continue with these books with your insights.
So glad it was helpful! You never know what those transfer students are going to walk in with 😂 But in this case, it is a solid series. Thanks for sharing!
This was very helpful. I was alway wondering what to look for when buying extra piano music books. I'm grade 3 and I've bought a couple of easy music books and found that they not that easy like you say but I can manage a few in the book. So now I know not to buy piano solos because they would be to hard. Thank you for the information
I hear that! Sometimes my students bring in books by their favorite artists and I can see that the songs have been [technically] simplified, but the arrangements are just not thoughtfully done for students. I think a lot of the Easy Piano music published is sadly mass edited without much care. I usually end up making my own arrangements for my students. But I guess it's nice to know AI isn't replacing my skills yet 😂 Thanks for sharing!
Do you have any good beginner piano pieces for children to practice chromatic scale passages? We have Pumpkin Boogie, but I wonder what else would be fun to play to reinforce the new fingering pattern here? Thanks!
Thank you so Much! ❤️❤️
I love your videos thanks so much!
Thank you! 🩵
Good reminders of these fun moody solos!
Thank you so much for this commentary! Seeing other books I haven't interacted with before and hearing about specific pros and cons was helpful. You seem so professional and informative! I have always used the Bastien Piano Basics books when teaching since that's what I grew up learning, but I've only been teaching for about 4 years. I'm not sure if you're familiar with those, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on that series since I don't know how they would compare to the others, and not many people seem to have reviews on it. Thank you again for your insight!
I also grew up using Bastien Basic! I think the main reason people aren't talking about the series much anymore is simply that they are a little outdated (1985). Not that the methodology is extremely different from Alfred or Faber, but there are some uncomfortably questionable politically incorrect images and titles throughout the books as I remember 😬 However, I have dabbled in the Bastien New Traditions books enough to appreciate the update. If you're comfortable with Bastien's pacing and schedule of introducing concepts, you might be interested to check out the New Traditions books! But it's also nice to have a few series you are familiar with as you grow as a teacher because different students seem to thrive better in different series. Thank you for sharing! 🩵
I LOVE this series. It's got me thinking about these songs in another light. Thank you for making teaching fun and fresh!
Thank you, Cecilia! 😍🩵
Can you tell me what would be the easiest music notation software to purchase? What do you use? Thanks
I have used expensive pro software for decades (Finale, Sibelius) and they are great, but complex. Last year I gave MuseScore a try...and I was pleasantly surprised at its capabilities! It is fairly user friendly and intuitive. And, best of all, it's 100% free for computer/tablet. musescore.org
@@TheTattooedPianoTeacher Thanks so much I will give it a try. Just need it for very beginner stuff. I have looked at that one and will download. Thanks
Ooh, that Mysterious Ballet is great!
I find my students either LOVE or HAATE that one 😂 (I love it)

You have such a gift for analysis! Great walk through!
Thank you!! 🩵🩵
Love these! We are doing Pumpkin Boogie right now 😄
Probably everyone's fave song from this level 😅 So catchy
I appreciate the tip! I have a student about to wrap up level 1 Bastien, so I picked up the 2A, 2B and 3A in order to mix in some more fun / challenge pieces. We all love the Boomdiyadda song! Lol
Yes! My students love that song too!
Thank you!!! My 4-year-old student found all the groups of three black keys, all the groups of two black keys, even found some Cs! We played, "Into the Cave," together, and then she was done. Boom. Perfect 5 minute lesson for a real squirmy one! 😅
Haha! I love it. Hey, you learned a song...that's a great lesson! 😄
We just played The Haunted Mouse for our RCM Prep A a exam! 🎉
Love that one for introducing voicing between the hands! 🩵
Ooh, i think i need this
Wow, first of all, congratulations! I have one question though. I made $2.67 in September, but the ‘Next Payout’ section is empty. My question is: how much do I need to earn to receive a payment from TpT to my bank account?
Thank you! TPT pays out monthly and I don't believe there is a minimum (to my knowledge). Double check that you have everything set up with your linked account through Hyperwallet, and if you're still not seeing any payments coming through, I would reach out to the TPT staff - they are usually very helpful. Good luck!
I love all the books listed except Wunderkeys. Glad to see we have similar taste
Love it!
Im a musician play the piano, however i never teached piano im a teenager and going to be teaching my 2 cousins the piano age 14 and 12 i think? How should i go about it i was going to teach them together and I'll be teaching in there home they only have one piano
Hi there! Because they are starting at an older age (making sharing one piano difficult) and this your first teaching experience, I would have them take one-on-one lesson with you. You could, however, have a joint theory time where they work on the same theory page together! Or you could explain a new theory concept (such as a new note, slurs vs ties, new scale, etc) to both of them at the top of the lesson time, then give them a worksheet to complete while the other is having their lesson, then switch. Down the road they might enjoy trying a duet as well. So perhaps a hybrid private lesson experience could be most successful! Hope that helps. Good luck! 🩵
Viewer #14. Hello people in the future, from your past. A youngling going for the 1st to start.
Love it! Littles especially need to be moving! Lol
Yes they do! 😄
I teach only private lessons. I work seven days a week, with 12 hour days on the weekends and all after school hours. I have some short breaks occasionally, but they quickly get filled with make-ups. I also do 30/45/60 based on attention span and/or age. One five year old gets a 15 min lesson. My class is at capacity with 40 students and several taking multiple lessons per week.
So regarding the $.20 listing fee on Etsy, if I put up 600 digital products, I’d have to pay $120 initially and then $120 every four months just to keep the products listed? That kinda sux. Thanks for the video btw.
Yep that's how it works on Etsy! 🤷 (full listing fee details here www.etsy.com/legal/fees/)
Thank you! Can you put a purchase link in the description?
Sadly no :( RUclips doesn't allow any links in Shorts descriptions or comments. Links in the long video though! You can click on the linked video within this Short or head to my channel and look for the "Level 1 Supplemental Songbooks" video :)
@@TheTattooedPianoTeacherI’ve noticed some creators adding links in the pinned comment. That might be an alternative to the description if you want to add a link.
@@christinalatouche6283 Maybe those creators are special. But they don't show up at all for me! YT makes them invisible :( Thanks tho <3
Your new book looks great! I will definitely check it out!! I would love some recommendations for Level 2-3 supplemental books! I just started a new transfer student who seems to have been pushed ahead too quickly and is in piano adventures 3A but definitely needs some extra easier material before we move forward!
Thank you! I have definitely been in that situation with transfer students in Piano Adventures. I can't wait to compile some of my favorite Level 2, 3, and beyond supplemental books!
I’m at AMEB level 3 at the moment and it is horrible!
If it's encouraging, AMEB Grade 3 is quite a bit above the "Level 3" discussed in this video. You're farther along than many students ever get! 🎉 But hang in there...you can do it! 🙌
Playtime Disney is my favourite
Yes! Definitely a favorite for my students
Great video I can never get enough supplemental song books
Thank you! 🩵
Hi there! I would love to know if you would recommend starting a very smart 4-5 year old preschooler on this book instead of the preschool series? I’m a K-8 music teacher but a beginner to piano lessons and found the preschool books just a little slow and hard to understand for me personally.
Absolutely! I think starting in WK Primer Book One is going to be perfect for many kindergartners. The 3 books of the Primer series move along slow enough that they will work well as an intro to piano for that age group. I've used them with ages 4-8. Good luck!
Great idea 😊
How about one on 3 yr olds
I like it. First lesson with a 3yo...definitely different than older kiddos!
So excited to try out these first lesson interview workpages with my new students! I have a new sign-on of a family with 2 adults and a 5 year old, so advice for all ages is much appreciated! 😅
So cool! You've got the whole fam! Best of luck! 🩵
Just for comparison, I have 40 students, average income unless I take time off, is 12,000 per month (without business deductions, which can be huge). I only teach private, though some students come twice a week. I take one day off per week and teach during all non-school hours. But I started just like you, though I still based lesson time on attention span. It works fine. How long lessons last now depends on a student's attention span or my availability.
This was by far my favorite TPT video sharing stats! I love how you use the graph and it came up as you spoke. It was just so much easier to process it that way!! Congratulations and thanks for sharing!
Oh good, I'm glad it was clear! Thank you! 🩵
Piano teacher here. AGREED! I use it EVERY DAY!
Thank you. Past my grade 3 at 62 years old so I was pretty chuffed. I love your videos because I like to see it from the teachers point of view aswell.
Thank you! So glad you're here! 🩵
Great food for thought!
Well that makes me feel better. I have a 30min lesson and I practice at least 7 hours a week. Because I was thinking is it enough.
Good for you!! I’m sure you’re making great progress!!
That's great! Keep it up. And always be kind to yourself when you have an "off" week. :)
It's always personalized!
My GF is a music instructor at Guitar Center and would like to start her online music tutoring service (using video chat), does this help with something like that?
Yes and no! MyMusicStaff can help with scheduling, invoicing, payments, sending lesson notes, and can basically serve as an all-in-one platform to connect her to her students/parents. However, MMS does not serve as a video lesson platform in and of itself. So she would use the video platform of her choice. Hope that helps!
Hey Federation teachers--did you see the Bulletin Updates posted on the website?!? I just printed it today...31 PAGES OF UPDATES!! 😱Sooo many new songs added to Piano Solo list. I'll have to record a video about these updates because this is unprecedented! But just a quick reminder to always check for the newest updates before choosing a piece for your students!🙃
Your videos and ideas are just awesome! 😀
Oh, thank you! 🩵🩵
growing up, my teacher wanted 5 minutes for each grade as a minimum. So first graders practiced 5 min daily, 2nd graders practiced 10 min, etc. Thanks for this - I like the tiered guidance, and the acknowledgement that not every student wants to be a "PIANIST".
Oh that's interesting. I doubt I could get my high schoolers to practice for that long with their busy, busy lives, but it is nice to have a tangible guideline that students can easily remember and commit to. Thanks for sharing! 🩵
As a child, I remember practicing 30 minutes daily. I’m a piano teacher and feel that if a parent is investing in piano lessons, much less practice than that is not going to pay off. My youngest student is 7 and a beginner. I encourage her to practice 20 minutes daily. One of my piano parents has her kids practice 15 minutes in the morning before school and again 15 minutes after.
Oh that's interesting--I wonder if more students would benefit from 2 shorter daily practice sessions. Thanks for sharing your experience, Susan! 🩵
The link gave me a Recital Check;it’s not a Practice one. 😂 you’re totally bang-on with age/time at piano. I also include things like written homework sheets as their ‘piano practice’time
Thanks! It's fixed now! (if you click on "Confirm your subscription" again it will open the correct file 😂) I count theory as practice time with my students too!
@@TheTattooedPianoTeacher thank you
I haven't entered students in the Festival in a few years. Composition is a big part of my studio. I can't speak highly enough about Federation's composing competition. It's treated as separate from the Festival as there is no live performance for a judge. If interested, the information is included in the Bulletin with more specific information on state websites and a couple of important forms on the national website. Thanks for your excellent explanation and review of the Festival!
I'm glad you commented! I have thought about entering a couple of talented young composers in the composition division, but haven't yet taken the leap. Maybe I will read up on it and give it a try! Thank you!
Wow, hot teacher😏🔥
