There are No Direct Flights from New York to Marseille (1998, posted 2023)
In 1993, I completed a video diary of a gay couple with AIDS, who died before the footage was edited. That film was "Silverlake Life", and because it had a high profile release, I was active for a long time promoting it, speaking as a gay man myself about gay and AIDS issues to the press and to the public at many film festivals. Eventually I felt like all I ever talked about was gay life, and I needed to move beyond that, to have my gay identity be just a part of my larger self. So I moved away from New York to Marseille, France, and tried to be "post-gay", but it didn't work. I found myself drawn a newly emerging gay community in Marseille in 1997. So this film, "There are No Direct Flig...

This disease literally sucked the life right out of its victims & for those who wanted to keep their sexuality & status a secret, the outward/visible symptoms (ks/wasting/etc) of aids pretty much made that impossible. There obviously isn't/wasn't anything about this disease that's good, but if you had to find at least one thing that could be seen as such,it was the fact that symptoms didn't appear for 10 years in a large percentage of its victims, which could be seen as both fortunate or unfortunate. Fortunate = you didn't have any symptoms to make your life miserable Unfortunate = you weren't even aware you were carrying a deadly disease around so you were infecting others unintentionally. 1:08:40 😮 1:08:40

Sure it may be sad but think about the cities of Sodom and Gommorah God rained ash and destroyed many people due to this lifestyle. All the pride stuff like what we saw at the opening of the olympic ceremonies in France a few days ago, this lifestyle is being shoved down everyone's throats as if it's an accomplishment, but it is not how God wants us to live. And I am not trying to judge or anything I just see all those horrible skin lesions all over his body and it all comes down to the choice to have sex with another guy. I don't know why that lifestyle is celebrated nowadays instead of talking people out of living that way. I guess it's easy to understand though since Satan and his minions have seem to have gained control and push their satanic agenda's on the the world. I wish we had God back in our country and other countries because it's getting worse and worse. I guess the bible tells us this will happen so all we can do is try to fight against it the best we can. If God didn't exist and Satan didn't exist they wouldn't have done a mockery of Jesus at the olympics. And to all those athletes who stayed to compete and didn't walk out and show support for Jesus just shocks me. We need God back in this world! Sorry for the whole paragraph of words to read.

These two guys were brave to have allowed all of us outsiders into their lives to watch them from the very beginning of this part of their lives to the end of it.Their upbeat spirit (especially Mark) said alot about their character, strength & bravery that they remained high spirited up to the end regardless of their pain & suffering & the stigma from the outside world that was judgemental, prejudice and at times down right cruel.May a day soon come where the medical community finds a cure for the millions that have to live with this every single day. Thank you so much for sharing this. I have watched the profoundly moving documentary a few times over the years and never have forgotten Tom and Mark. The film was so personal, so incredible in many ways and it really touches you the love and commitment these two beautiful men had for each other. Mark seemed so strong and still showed his sense of humour in dark moments. What amazing men they were, you felt like they were dear old friends. I wish I had known them personally. There is an amazing comfort in knowing they had such amazing people/friends who helped them to complete their work/story. Sad to hear that Paul also died. Everyone who was involved in putting this film together were some of the best people you could ask for in this world. Such kindness, respect and love shone through. I think this is one of the most beautiful and important pieces of film ever to have been made and has certainly made a difference in my life not only as an education about the horrendous journey of AIDS but it really opened my eyes and heart to know that such beauty and kindness amongst the darkness existed then as it does now.
