I was an apprentice at Ford Dagenham in the late 70's. Looking back it was the dying embers of true UK manufacturing. Coal and iron ore were brought up the Thames and smelted into engine blocks in the foundry. The whole process seemed to be years ahead of its time. There was an engine plant , body plant and assembly plant. The bodies were 'dropped' onto the powertrain in the assembly plant and I still find it incredible that the right bodies were married up with the correct engines. So sad to see the decline of Ford Uk. The design facility at Dunton remains and a token kit car assembly at Dagenham but all others in Essex closed. The UK has become a 'service' sector. Massive respect to all the women and men that once made the UK manufacturing sector the envy of the world.

My heart goes out to the parents and the medical staff. Its all very well for funding to be available for keeping premies alive but the funding not there for their whole lives. I am a 42 year old surviving 25 weeker. I have profound hearing and sight difficulties requiring some level of support for all my life. I have 3 children all born prematurly at 34, 32 and 30 weeks respectively. My youngest child still requires some level of community support. The lifelong impact of prematurity is immense. Both my mum and myself were faced with the difficult decision of "if your child deteriorates, how much intervention?" Its a huge pressure. I can see both sides, as a mum you will fight for your baby, but as a person with some medical experience the long- term effects of complications can be difficult.

i had twins at 24 weeks. i notice how old this documentary is. our nicu team informed us just how much they’ve improved in the last five years and keep advancing. my twins both survived, came home in november, stayed on oxygen til january 1st and we’ve been off any oxygen or other medical equipment since. my son was 1lb4 oz and with his “adjusted” age is supposed to be the size of a 12 month old but is in 24 month old clothes and you’d never believe me he was a micro preemie. my daughter is right on track in 12 mo clothes (and wears her twins hand me downs lol) four months in the nicu, a very bumpy ride, but they are healthy and well like any other child. unless you know their medical history you’d never know. i have to pull up pictures to prove it to some. i’m glad i gave birth in a time where we’ve advanced to this level. science is amazing. and NICU NURSES ARENT PAID ENOUGH!!!! Our team went above and beyond and i can’t imagine the mental toll their job is on them. one of the neonatologists actually fought for me to have skin to skin with my son when others didn’t think it was a good idea, but he said moms touch is healing too. i’ll never forget that magical moment. i also was able to pump and feed my kids my milk through their feeding tube so while i was peering through the glass feeling so helpless/useless at least i was contributing SOMETHING.

33:00 - the thing is: My friend had a child, born 23 weeks old, she is 20 now. Her life is very full, she reads a lot, she writes books, she is in a group with young people who face the same problems as she does. She is in a whealchair, can use her right arm. But she is very happy and have a good quality of life. So I don´t think parents should feel guilty fighting for their ealy born babies.
