Frank Claudy

I have been playing Irish traditional music on flute and whistle all my adult life. The tunes have me in their grip...I have been fortunate to play with and learn from many of the legends in our music. I try to cite sources for tunes whenever the version is attributable to a particular musician.
Andrea-Dorian Jig by Chris Lussier
Chris has written some fantastic tunes, like this one, which features some tricky (for the whistle) D#s I have not quite weaned myself from the notes on this one, but I have gotten very fond of it on this Heikes whistle.

Lucky in Love Reel, Heikes D

Another reel to better familiarize myself with this new whistle, this tune popularized by Fireman Joe McKenna on flute in the Thirties. I first heard it on the album by that name featuring Charlie Lennon with friends and family.
The Smooth Footed Rambler Air and Lilting Banshee on a Heikes D

I am still exploring the capability of this new to me Heikes rosewood whistle. The air is from the Neal Collection. I first heard Jack and Charlie Coen play the Lilting Banshee.

David Hill was telling me about a recent party at the Twin Cities Center for Irish Music where everyone played the first polka, and I thought ‘what a good test for my new Heikes whistle, to play that and Mickey - two overplayed tunes - in A.’ We used to pair these up at the Emerald Isle ceilis at St. Pius X. I am well pleased with the tuning and timbre of this whistle.

Ben Walker put this up on a FB site during a #copycat game. I used to play this but it had been a while. Meanwhile, I took delivery on this remarkable Heikes D whistle from The Irish Flute Store. Heikes, based in Colorado, is also a violin-maker; perhaps that has something to do with the timbre of this instrument. The top notes are quite bright, had to put the mic on omni and get it some distan...
The New Policeman Reel on Tommy Martin D

Martin Laird reminded me of this reel that I heard first on Matt Molloy’s ‘black’ album. Because of the octave jumps, I find it easier to play on whistle than flute.

Peter Fitzgerald wrote the A part and I penned the B section. It was presented as a wedding present to Philippe Varlet and Mary Duke Smith, lo these many years ago. Tony is still turning out these very impressive whistles - get one while you can.
The Kesh Jig in D on a low Qwistle
Просмотров 131Месяц назад
Are you finding some tunes a bit...shopworn? Try them in different keys. I am playing an early Qwistle low D with a printed fipple. I really like the timbre of the instrument, but it has very little resistance in the airway. On the plus side, that can work well for pulsing shorter phrases.
Saddle the Pony Jig, D fingering on a G MK pro whistle
Просмотров 264Месяц назад
I was inspired by Harry Bradley's recent recording of this jig on the flute, played properly in G. I thought I would try to breathe a little life in it by playing it with D fingering on a G whistle, so if anyone would like to play along in the usual key, you can have a duet!
Garech's Wedding (slip jig)/Trip to Sligo (double jig)/Tarbolton (reel) on Swayne Bb

This is a set I put together some 25 years ago when I was teaching a whistle class in Nova Scotia. To honor their tradition of large sets in one key with different rhythms, I took these Em tunes. The first was composed by Paddy Moloney and was recorded on (I think) Chieftains 10. I am recovering from hip surgery, COVID and a dental mishap, so it was all I could do to get this down.
Apples in Winter Jig, played on a Sindt D silver barrel

This setting comes from William Hanafin, a piper who played around the Boston area with his more extensively recorded fiddle playing brother Michael. I found a transcript on the Traditional Tune Archive but have not heard the recording of William actually playing it.
Miss Galvin’s and Mary’s Jig

Mary Bergen’s first album hit like a thunderbolt in 1979. I had been playing for about 6 years at that point, and had her lp on the turntable continuously. Sometime that year, I turned up at Ellen Donlan’s pub with the odd jig I have appended here to the hornpipe. At first, I had no idea what the inspiration was for this AAB composition, until my bandmate Tommy Banjo pointed out the similarity ...

Sliabh na mBan, played on a Jon Swayne Bb
Просмотров 1583 месяца назад
I first encountered this air on a recording of the 1964 Fleadh, played with great feeling by Cathal McConnell. Sliabh na mBan or Girl of the Mountain was also the name of the Irish Army's Rolls Royce armored car that accompanied Michael Collins' convoy on the day he was ambushed and killed.

Oh you play well. Thanks for sharing.
Nicely done
Hey, someone else knows the name I do for the last tune - everyone looks at me like a madman calling it "Mickey Chewing Bubble Gum" instead of "Bill Sullivan's" here in the Seattle area. Love your tunes & playing as always!
@@CamStLouis that is the title I learned it by. I believe that was what Cuz called it. I keep coming back to the old tunes: they are catchy.
Nice, well done!!
Really enjoyed this!
The Burke is so powerful, yet sweet in your hands.
Wow that's amazing video sir.ilove it
Wowww what a beautiful song. Nice player
Bravo!
I always enjoy your playing! Thank you.
I put the headphones on for this one. Like the tone and the tune. If you put a reed in that whistle would it be a clarinet?
@@patricktibbits5475 not quite a clarinet. Whistles perform sonically like open tube instruments, like the flute, while clarinets act as a closed tube - so the partials are incomplete.
@@frankclaudy1031 Music is the only discipline where the more you tell me, the less I know.
Can't go wrong with the key of D.
@@tpWinch Terry, how are you?
@@frankclaudy1031 Good, Frank, as I hope you are.
I think it’s stressful to play a low whistle that eats so much air.
@@giorgiolamborghini813 I agree, but for the right tune, it is worth it for the tone.
It's fair to say, I don't think these first ones are easy to play for most people. The Qwistle in my video "Drop of a Hat" is identical to this one in design, so it is at least possible for me to play comfortably. Seems I have a set of lungs on me (to be fair I'm sometimes called on in my family to blowup camp beds by mouth and that sort of thing), and Frank you must have a good air supply too! The Qwistles featured elsewhere on RUclips are of the later kind, it does take less air, but without losing the sound and the strength of low D. Took a bit of doing, that, and is unlike any other low D head. Happy to send you one Frank if you'd like, since you're still playing the Qwistle & enjoying it - just pm me your address & will pop one in the post for you to try. It's got o-rings just the same as the one you've got, should change out easily enough.
@@donaldwglindsay3837 I will do that, thank you!
@@donaldwglindsay3837 I sent a PM with my address.
@@frankclaudy1031 got that thanks Frank. Will post one out to you tomorrow
Gorgeous!!! This wooden Bb whistle has a beautiful voice but clearly you are the one contributing to this magnificent voice. Many congratulations and much health!
Frank, it's great to hear you playing as beautifully as I've heard in the past even with a healing hip replacement! Great job!
@@beccaschroeder7955 thank you, Becca. I hope you are letting the world hear your beautiful singing.
Yes, a good setting.
A great tune Frank. I had forgotten about that one! Lovely playing.👏👏
So, not an expert as the only whistles I’ve truly owned are a Dixon005, a custom personally made 3D printed whistle, and a Walton’s whistle, but is that a Lir body on a Killarney head?
@@patrickbacher7881 it is all Lir, one of the first models they offered in D
@@frankclaudy1031 Looks great. It was the color of the head piece that made me wonder because it looks so much like a Killarney. I wondered if they were interchangeable for a moment.
Lovely Frank great playing.
Hi love your style of playing tin wistle i also plays the tin wislte but i plays more like jazz and blues onn itt can yiu maybe make n clip of showing the notes of this song
@@MarnusJoubert-q3k I will try. I haven’t had much luck figuring out how to add the sheet music to videos.
@@frankclaudy1031can I play a song for you on my penny wistle
I should add that is the most enjoyable version of that tune I've heard.
Thank you for the informative lesson. I enjoyed your exploration of the subtleties of ornament usage.
Beautiful tone from that whistle. Just to note, this isn't a Finbarr tune but one written by the late Brendan McGlinchey.
@@52Paddy1991 you are correct. I will correct the note.
Are you playing that from memory? No score?
Yes, I played that from memory.
Two thumbs up. Thank you.
Sweet tone, and sweet tune, too. I like the way you add vibrato. I want to learn that technique! Thanks for showing! 🎶😊🎵🎶
Thnx alot boss for your work
Nice playing. Just got Mellow Dog but I think mine is more "husky sounding". Top B requires focused attack otherwise it is quite a nice little whistle. Husky but expressive. Takes a lot more air than my Killarney.
Nice work boss but I have some simple qn what is the name of the whitle your using thnx
@@mpanga2916 that is a boxwood high D by Olivier Bouchard.

Nice one, Frank!
Lovely hurling Frank, you never lost it!
Smooth excellent playing
Incredible sound and nice selection of music! What is the whistle you are using?
An MK Pro F
A very nice mix.
Gorgeous, Frank. I’ve been in the whistle world for nearly a year now, and it’s a generalisation, I know, but most of you fellas have been playing the fast dance tunes primarily. This is why, when I hear an accomplished male player, like yourself, play an Air with such feeling, it really strikes home and I could just listen all day! Thank you 😊👍
Cool! I've played Dance of the Honey Bees for a long time, and was teaching it to a student just yesterday! It doesn't get played much in sessions, but I'm trying to introduce it :) Never heard the other tune before - very nice!
Nicely done!
Very honest review. Thanks.
Excellent!
Nice! This reminds me of Spongebob's background music
Two great tunes there Frank. Maith thú.
The Freeman Blackbird is also a wonderful whistle.
It is a very nice whistle. I bought a bunch from Jerry some years ago and distributed them all to students. I should have kept one.
Sindt whistle? You dont see many of those in the wild anymore
Awesome playing!
Bravo

Nice thanks for the post
My mother used to sing that…. God that brings back memories. Great playing Frank.
