Just finished watching “Joker: Folie à Deux.” The success of the first film is that it directly tapped into a socio-political undercurrent marked by societal frustration with issues pertaining to how we address mental and behavioral health, social welfare, and class disparity. It also appealed to those who have felt as though they have been the victim of social, political, health, and judicial systems that have allowed them to fall through the cracks and failed them. To that end, people came to identify with Arthur Fleck. I remember watching it in the theater when the first one came out, and when he killed Murray- the crowd literally applauded and cheered the man that the film had just been building up to be the “Big Bad.” And because of that, the film was a massive success. Obviously, the producers and writers (and we will just say the powers that be) felt that “Joker” appealed to the - let’s just say “wrong target audience”- and that they needed an unnecessary sequel intentionally written to destroy every aspect of the first that audiences loved. Look it up- they intentionally wrote the second to erode the pillars that made the first such a success and Arthur Fleck a type of folklore hero. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is a humiliation ritual for an audience held captive who wanted a continuation of the first film’s success. And all of the legitimate appeal that the first had regarding the issues affecting the disenfranchised and harried masses was tossed aside, and the sentiments felt by the audience goers spit back in their faces. And then Hollywood wonders why their initial projections for box office sales had to be negatively adjusted 60% lower…. Today, more than ever- We are all clowns. 🤡
