Minimal Phone's Communication Strategy is Confusing
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.7 дней назад
The Minimal Phone project promised a fresh approach to minimalism, but its communication strategy has been anything but simple. Updates are scattered across various social media accounts, founder posts, and the main company account, leaving backers in the dark. With production wrapping up for the first batch and packaging revealed, we still have no full demo of the device. Why is it so hard to ...

30 Days with the SLEKE Phone | The Good, the Bad, and the Minimal
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.14 дней назад
In this video, I share my one-month experience using the SLEKE phone, a fantastic device for digital minimalists. This de-Googled phone has helped me reduce my screen time significantly, and the battery life is excellent since I don't rely on it all the time. While I love its focus on minimalism, there are a few areas for improvement. The home screen aesthetics become distorted when I enlarge i...

Actually I have one and I am trying to unlock it from AT&T. If I can't I'll use it as you suggest.
Nokia 500. Extreme compact. And useles. Have 3.5 jack
i got a nokia c02 or something a slider phone of 2009..works great even with earbuds and headphones ..i go ad more music again soon since its easy to use and downside is back is sticky
Yikes the sticky back. This happened to my old Kindle. So many good old devices to use.
@LauraMalvoyante short story mom found it in her apartment in a drawer I got a old battery of my old devices and it ran ! Should I try fix it in a way ? Idk how
Evil Apple's Airpods Pro2 has this thing with older phones (even their own such as the iPhone 3Gs) where if you pause a song once, it just doesn't play again until you reconnect them and I only have Airpods as of now so I can't use my recently bought BB Classic outdoors or at the gym. :(
I couldn't get my Airpods Pro 2 to work with the BlackBerry Torch at all. Super frustrating
I agree with all the points. However, there's one mp3 player that modern enough to support streaming and all sorts of apps as well. The iPod Touch (7th gen) running iOS 15!
Wow that's good to know 👍
Ya... I was pretty frustated. Ive heard some sketchy things about the guy so whats the game plan? Produce a phone that doesnt even work and then have people wait for updates? Scaryyyyyy... Did you get one?
@@jennafo No I didn't get one and I wouldn't get one even if updates are "promised". The phone still doesn't have FCC and CE certification.
@LauraMalvoyante interesting. So weird. I have so many questions haha
I'm also going through the "revisiting old devices and giving them a new life" vibes, it's so much fun, I've been collecting old apple devices for a year I think and I just love to know that they're not in some dumpster, plus they make beautiful bedroom/studio/setup decor
They really are works of art. I've seen people on Etsy upcycle old apple devices into home decor items and even coaters. My iPod shuffle no longer works but it's a great hair clip.
Sound quality?
Pretty good. Depends on your file type but it works just as good as any other phone.
my love i just ordered this phone was yesterday and was scouring youtube for a decent and recent review. thanks for blessing my feed
I still use one but software and Google are the issue
Sony sells MP3 players. I think they call them DACs. They are several hundred dollars. It's basically just an iPod Touch with Android, so repurposing old devices isn't too different from what Song offers.
I saw those. I agree that old devices can do the same for a lot less.
@LauraMalvoyante - If one produced music and was an audiophile, I could see the benefit of them. I have a feeling I got the acronym wrong. Nonetheless, I think it's unnecessary for most people.
Yeah, the acronym you used, DAC, stands for digital audio converter, which is something that all music players, phones and computers have in order to produce sound from the digital signal. The term you were looking for is DAP, which stands for digital audio player. The quality of the DAC varies from device to device though. Serious music players and phones built for music will have better DACs or even just better implementation of the DAC. For example, the LG V series of phones will best ANY phone (or even iPods) today in terms of music playback and power given to headphones thanks in part to the tuning of the Sabre brand of DACs that LG used by the company, Meridian Audio. Implementation also matters as HTC demonstrated with the HTC 10. They used the same DAC all high-end Android phones were using but implemented the DAC better and was able to best everyone else that was using the same DAC. HTC was only second to LG at the time in terms of sound.
@orangeyellow-me1pz - Thanks for providing the correct answer. I knew what I wrote looked off. I also remember having the HiSense A-something and it had HD Audio when headphones were plugged in to the phone. I'm not an audiophile, but I did notice the bump in quality -- even for lower bitrate music. I couldn't tell you anything about how it works.
04:20 - I used to use the buttonless iPod Shuffle as a tie clip.
That's awesome!
This is very stylish! I will give my girlfriend an ipod. Thanks for the idea❤
Love a Blackberry
Me too!
I have a bb passport,I use it as a comic reader😁
This is fantastic. The Passport is perfect for that!
Love that we both uploaded MP3 player videos today. Good stuff as always Laura!
@@theretrouniverse great minds think alike! I am watching your video now.
@@LauraMalvoyante awesome thank you!
I noticed your blackberry torch is QWERTZ not QWERTY. Was it for the German market? Or is it custom? I want to love physical keyboards, but since I learned to use the COLEMAK layout, having a QWERTY keyboard is actually anti-productive for me.
It is a German BlackBerry. Germany has a larger choice of used BlackBerry phones than France or the UK. Also the prices are better and the phones usually come with originally boxes and accessories.
hi, I also have z10, but going through the above process, I cannot get my screen reader to open using double tap on screen ? any idea, its on os10
Oh no, you may need to keep going back and forth in the menus. Maybe the Z10 is more sensitive since its a full touchscreen. Or skip the setup menu, activate screen reader in settings then access the setup menu from the notification directly. This is all I can suggest though.
@@LauraMalvoyante hi, yes sorted that, turned restart on, but cannot get past tap bottom right on wifi to hear skip, then able to double click it, but will not let me get to skip. was ok on my leap.
@@alanhiggins147 Do you think changing the display size could give you more screen size and maybe allow you skip? This is a strange bug. I need a Z10 or Leap now.
@@LauraMalvoyante strange but true, it suddenly happened, all good thank you, I do get well once as the moment, it is popping up with " you will need to sign in with BB id to use some things like messenger etc; not sure if that will ask again or if I can get rid of that ?
idk if you can help but i just got my bbq20 and texting works fine with my att sim but i cant make calls any ideas?
Calls only work on 3g. I'm not sure ATT still uses 3g towers. I heard some people using Mint and TMobile but not ATT.
@@LauraMalvoyanteThank you so much! Amazing RUclipsr and response time!
Regarding the Black Friday "promotion", the phone has been 20% off the whole time anyway. Seems manipulative to now market that deal as black Friday when its not going anywhere...and then to leave the add up for months after looks so unprofessional.
I can't wait to hear your observation of their Q&A! Perfect timing !
Are you AI generated?
@@tinblue sometimes I wish I were. I am a real person. You can see my live videos
hi, Im in the usa. How am i'm able to make calls and text?
I have heard some people using TMobile or Mint mobile but this varies on location in the states.
@@LauraMalvoyante thank you for that! love your vids, btw!
Book Palma or Book Palma. Does it handle pdf very well or I need to get at least a 10" ebook reader for that?
It handles pdf fine for me. You can always zoom in if you need to see better
They communicate actively with the backers though and for a start up to be sending so many updates to users its pretty crazy actually not only because of deadlines or waiting for confirmation on things from their manufacturers, but often times we dont see many updates from start ups.
I have been also following the Minimal Phone also more than six months, although I didn't order jet. I don't think im going to order the Phone right now. The founder said that they started shipping the orders a few days ago, but until now nobody gets the Phone. Interestingly, although the Phone are produced in China, the order from China/Hongkong are still not shipped. Also I have some feeling that they don't have big production line, because normally there should be some leaks on Chinese social media and for now I didn't see any of it.
I hope some billionaire who is boring with his / her current life.. Get an idea to bring back Blackberry and BB10 back to life. Kinda his or her project
Would you rather use Bigme Hi Break pro or this Sleke? For daily usage
I prefer the SLEKE for myself because it has essential apps. The Bigme Hi break Pro will be coming out soon and may be a lot better than the standard Bigme Hibreak.
@LauraMalvoyante thanks. I didn't knew Sleke existed until I pre-ordered Bigme Hi Break Pro, it definitely seems better overall. Hopefully it's good. If not I'll just buy Sleke afterwards.
@@LauraMalvoyante hi Laura have you seen Mudita Kompakt? Would love a review from you. That seems like a solid competitor vs Sleke device and big me
Yeah, I seem to recall you repeatedly saying that you're a digital minimalist. I've never heard you say that you're Amish.
Hahaha. It's funny because I am from Pennsylvania originally and was around Amish a lot as a kid. They are the digital minimalist experts.
@LauraMalvoyante - Haha. I have no words. Love this story.
LMAO - You usually have mellow music. I was caught off guard by Boss Bitch.
My music tastes are eclectic 😉
The communication strategy of Minimal Phone is not only confusing it's out right a bunch of smoke an mirrors. The Phone is not FCC approved and does not have PTCRB certification, which means that this phone will not work in the US. Full Stop. This was such a blatant cash grab, by a guy who had a really questionable business/ startup past.
@@MisiekStinkyPants I saw this and also noticed that the CE European certification is not on the box either. This means people who ordered the devices in Europe won't be supported either.
Someone on one of their videos claimed that it did receive FCC approval but they didn't site their source and I wasn't able to find any evidence of them receiving FCC approval.
They have delivered some phones and some in UK and USA have received the devices. Seems to be working devices with bugs though and the team will be providing software updates by February 2025. See the videos from Jose Briones to get a detail look at the device.
@juslikefrusciante the devices can’t make calls because they still don’t have FCC approval. I saw Jose’s videos and I think it will take months to fix some of those bugs.
I ordered 2 of these phones on a whim they ever came to production and am an early backer. I am fine with the whole process and communication. They asked a lot questions (polls) in the start and expressed for everyone to join the discord. I am not a discord user but did sign up and checked every couple of months. I think the guys have done ok communicating and I am happy to see devices shipping. I am not going to fault them at all. I have had much worse experiences on crowd funded projects.
I'm torn between BB and Sharp flip phone😔
@@summerwintermelon I just checked the Sharp flip and now I want it 😂 It's a hard choice!
Just seen the demo for this no way I'd entertain this thing it's painfully frustrating I see there is a refresh rate and they change it all the time from low to ultra which leads me to think on ultra it will drain the battery fast and on the low refresh rate I would chuck the thing at the wall. All so why does it flicker so much it's a no from me.
I was going to do a reaction video but I'm not wasting my time. Showing Google Play as the first thing to demo shows me this is not a digital minimalism device. The flashing screen hurts my eyes. They told me I spread false information and hurt their bottom line. I'm done.
@@LauraMalvoyante Oh dear I did notice the demo link you put up had been removed, the google play thing baffled me tbh!
I am sure you saw this by now, but there are reports of people getting their tracking numbers for the device now. Did they do this immediately after your video to spite you or something? Haha. I am watching this situation closely.
Yes they saw. Of they did it to spite me. They are angry about this video. I am getting plenty of hate comments from their supporters and they told me I hurt their sales. So I am done.
@@LauraMalvoyante - LMAO, not because I think the situation is funny. It's because that was the moment I decided I'm not buying it either. I feel your criticism is valid. I don't know what's so difficult about hiring someone to work 8 hours a month to interview the staff and provide an update to supporters. These people aren't underdogs. They are just dogs. I was still willing to give the phone a chance despite their blunders, but I have little tolerance for hatefulness. I'm out, too.
You're the first i go to for minimal phone info 😅 I mean, i watch some of the other stuff too, in fact, i cut back on my facebook and twitter usage in part because of your videos. It's also always interesting to get this from the perspective of someone with visual impairment issues. Makes me realize how important accessibility options are. Thanks for doing what ya dooooo ✨️
@@Yaduny thanks. I'm also trying to cut back on Twitter and other social media. I only jump on to check for this device since it's so interesting and different.
There's a fair amount of irony in having to check every social media outlet for a product that's supposed to get you off your phone.
@@holdenadkins8022 the irony is also their demo shows how watchable short form content is on the device. I like e-ink for my eyes but it does not stop me from doom scrolling.
There's a new video on The Minimal Company channel. ruclips.net/video/27KYaGPf86A/видео.html
Thanks, I will watch asap!
They just dropped an unboxing video today!
I will watch it asap!
