Duane's 4 solos on the back end of Elizabeth Reed is a master class in getting variation of sound out of a Les Paul. You could have fried an egg on the stage in front of his amp. He was killin' it!

The face of the original band was Duane and Berry, not Gregg.

It wasn’t the Allman Brothers yet though.

@@ledaswan5990 Gregg was absent during Duane's musician selection process and early gigs and even for the famous Jam that settled all the band members but one. Reese Wynans played keys that day but Duane knew all along it was Gregg who would be the perfect final member. The band was called The Allman Brothers from March 1969. No one person ran the band though Duane was Very inspirational to all. His selection criteria was that each member be better at their instrument than he. Onstage, though Gregg would speak a bit, out was Duane and Berry who interacted with the audience. After Duane passed, Gregg was expected to take over but he did not want that role. Berry carried on and after he passed, Dickey stepped up.

ABB was billed third behind Johnny Winter and Elvin Bishop but by the last night of the run, 3/13/71, they played as the headliners. That's why we got Mountain Jam immediately following Whipping Post, about an hour of incredible improvisation! Just a side-note. A year earlier, Duane watched Johnny Winter from the audience at Fillmore East. He said, "give me a year and I can cut him". He sure did, and that takes nothing away from Johnny! Duane had even recruited Johnny's drummer, Bobby Caldwell, to play congas and timbales with the ABB on these recordings! Bobby was going to be the 7th Brother and played a number of gigs with the band, but it never quite took hold.

As a guitarist, what I get from the Allman Brothers Band has value beyond what I could ever describe with mere words. It provides me with inspiration beyond my observable musical universe. Duane, Dickey, Warren, and Derek, those guys push me to explore and expand every conceivable possibility. I owe so much to them.

Duane convinced Dickie to leave the country stuff on the shelf. That's why there's not a lot of country boy especially on Fillmore record. Duane liked fishing but the Bros Band was rock and blues and jazz. Dickie brought all his stuff after the accident. Every time I hear "Their Biggest selling...Ramblin'..." I cringe. Elizabeth Reed shows a side of Dickie that Duane was hoping to cultivate. Dickie had a real inventiveness that got sidelined by his interactions. There was some great stuff. Thanks Dickie...

Great story Dickey told Dan Rather in an interview about IMOER and how he came up with the title to the song. He was incorrigible but man, was he talented.
