Houston Gardening Novice
США
Добавлен 21 апр 2024
Hello and welcome to my channel! I am guessing my way through gardening in Houston, Texas! Half the time I don't know what I'm doing - I have had some successes and many failures, and I'm enjoying it all. I live in Zone 9b, so we have a semi-tropical climate. Our growing season can be strange down here but we are lucky that we can grow many things all year round. I love DIY projects, especially outdoor and landscaping projects. I also enjoy indoor gardening. Thank you for stopping by and please let me know where you are gardening from. Happy Gardening!

Good looking collards
Thank you!
How old are those plants, thanks for video!
I planted them in March 2022, so this is their 3rd year in the ground. I have a video of their progress from when I planted them. Thanks for watching! ruclips.net/video/dGx7OnYZjBI/видео.htmlsi=2NeyaEl_fD8rlDUd
Thankfully I live in the tropics no plant dies in winter
We have a subtropical climate, but once in a while we get hard winter freezes that some of our plants cant handle 😂
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Your garden is looking so beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.😊🙏
Thank you so much and welcome. I will definitely share all I can, I love gardening!
Gorgeous!
Thank you!
Great results! 5:07 Hostas grow in Houston? Are the winters cool enough for adequate dormancy?
@@IRONWEED_ Thank you! Yes, hostas grow here but they must be planted in deep shade to survive our heat. They go to sleep around December and are back up around April
Soothing narration!
@@Ochi_Manuar Thank you!
Hi ! Love your garden! Where did you buy the burgundy iceberg rose?
Hi! I bought it at my local nursery (Houston Garden Center). Their supplier is (remove the space before com) starrosesandplants. com/plants/burgundy-iceberg/
Awesome, thanks for your prompt reply
So nice of you
Hi! Can you please give me the ratio is 1:1 ? Thanks
Hi! Yes, I usually make it as 1:1 for all 4 ingredients. This one has slightly more compost and peat moss because I was running out of pine bark mulch and perlite, but equal parts of all 4 works great! Thanks
The lawn, landscape and the music are all beautiful!
@@fredjeannieschultz1251 Thank you! ❤️
I’m in NC. I sewed clover seeds in back yard a couple years ago. I couldn’t sit on the patio without the Clover Mites all over me. I finally had to use weed control.
Oh wow, good to know! I havent seen clover mites yet, I will keep an eye out for them. Does the type of clover seeds you use matter? I used miniclover and because I mow often from Spring to Fall, they hardly get to the flower stage. I definitely wouldnt want to get rid of the clover .
They grow so fast! How wide is the widest?
Yes, they do! They always seem to get to about 5ft wide and 6ft high before the major pruning.
So inspired! Do you have a plant list somewhere? Love the small bed on the left hand side of the walkway!!
Thank you so much! I will start narrating the tour videos which will include the plant names (it's much easier than typing them up 😄. The front walkway garden beds are mostly August Gardenias, Jasmines, Standard Roses, Peach Drift Roses, and White Drift Roses, and Red Drift Roses as the permanent pieces. Dianthus and Rose Moss annuals are also sprinkled in randomly for color. The very front section has Salvia May/Nemarosa and Sprinter Boxwoods with Mecardonia Magic Carpet ground cover
What are you going to make? My mama would make fruit leather, agua fresca, guayabate, all kinds of stuff. I miss my mama.
I will make agua fresca...its perfect for this hot weather 🥰
I understand the checking for critters!! My husband makes fun of me, but I’d hate to find something in there. Your garden is absolutely beautiful.
Yes! I once found a slithering friend under shrub that I was just about to prune, now I check each time 😂...and thank you ❤️
Indeed, looks great. Same as for me, it didn't take over everywhere and the turf persists. I seeded two differ dwarf varieties, white and red flowers. Not sure if one will fight with the other, I suspect that the red will be less resilient. Can't wait for a decent lawn again.
Yes, the grass definitely persists but its much healthier with the ongoing supply of nitrogen from the clover. I imagine the white clover will be more prominent than the red variety
I've started to reseed 500 sq metres with clover, just had two weeks of 35 C temperatures, all the cherries dropped and burnt an area, burnt patches from cat pee, and I'm sick of watering and mowing twice a week. Started to appear in just a few days, will seed more in September.
It can get very discouraging, but it will get better. I also first seeded a small test area before ultimately reseeding the entire lawn. The results have been great. Check out my recent update video recorded in late June to show how the entire lawn now looks like in the Summer heat. Good luck with your project!
Awesome! I would like to do this on my patio, but I'm intimidated by the dry pour. How much did you spend in total $?
You can definitely do it! I took my time and did it slowly over ~2weeks. Each quickrete 80lb bag was about $4.50 and I used 20 bags for both pathways, so including the other materials it was probably around $150 for this project. I also did another project extending my patio using the same process. Look in my earlier videos. Good luck! ❤️
@@HoustonGardeningNovice Thank you!🥰
😎👍 nice garden 👌 ❤❤
Thank you!
a very unique look, and easier to take your time and control the appearance by doing it dry pour.
@@isabellavision Thank you! Yes, the slower time was the exact reason I did dry pour.
Excellent video, lovely choice of music, just right, unlike so many on RUclips. I'm in Australia in the subtropics and thinking about transforming my back garden like this.
Thank you! Back when I was still researching this, I actually found a lot of dichondra lawn videos out of Australia where they even sell them like sod plugs. I have just shot an early Summer update video and will be uploading it in a couple of days, so you will see how it's been holding up in our early 100F (38C) weather this season. If you try it, I hope it works for you as well.
Ayie!
It's been a journey! 😂
Nice transformation.
It has worked really well...Summer update coming soon!
Yes! Thank you. I’m going to do this for my crappy patchy parts of our side lawn. In Southern Cali, 3 degree hot summers and the side yard area is in full sun. I am ordering right now.
Try it! We have already had temperatures in the high 90s for the past few weeks and the lawn is so green and healthy. I will make another update video in July/Aug to show how it has fared when our temperatures are usually above 100 for weeks on end. Thank you for watching ❤
