      I'm not sure about antibiotics/atnivirals as I haven't had to use them yet. However, I know that you can pretty easily get prescriptions written and then take them into any pharmacy when needed. If you have an emergency you will always be taken to the public hospital where costs are incredibly minimal if any. I carry insurance, a lot of people do, as it gives you access to the private system - truly the only difference is that wait times are so significantly lower.

    In the US, they tell us that if have access to all these drugs without going to the doctor for a prescription, we will all die. But in other places, they don't have to get a prescription and there are no significant problems. Either everyone in these countries are doctors, or Americans are just not as smart as people in most of the rest of the world. The odd thing is that we have the nerve to call the US "the land of the free." There's a great deal more freedom in countries that are less "free" but don't have governments owned by organizations like the AMA.

It was a hot day and I was also wearing a cap, my mum was also wearing T-shirt and shorts, but their combo stood out so much. [Example] There are plenty of people in Sweden wearing this atleisure (?) clothing. Then there's the sweatpants/hoodie sets. And let's not forget the horrible "dad" sneakers. I was taught the following: Work out clothes - for work out, or, a leisurely stroll in the neighbourhood. Sweatpants/set - only for casual visits to family or very close friends. Sneakers - for all of the above. As my parents and grandparents used to say: No one wants to be around someone who went to the gym and thought it was appropriate to be around other people when it's clear they haven't even showered. (It doesn't matter if you actually went to the gym or not because athletic clothing equals work out in most people's minds, and you shouldn't make people feel uncomfortable around you, thinking you're a slob who can't even bother with personal hygiene.) Don't be rude. Don't flash bum or tits in public (for those who think leggings are pants and a work out bra is a top). But mostly, just have some self respect and don't dress like a bum or hooligan in public.

    I live in Barcelona and I went through a phase where I really wanted to fit in. I paid attention to what Catalan girls my age wore and then picked out a few of the typical things-dress pants, trench coat, shirts that are the cut that are popular-and I immediately noticed a difference. People stopped defaulting to trying to speak to me in English and it worked like a charm. I notice American tourists and they are easy to spot. I think even outside of athleisure Americans just...don't dress well? I think that a lot of Americans wear clothes that fit poorly. (Like the size is wrong, or the silhouette is very off balance, or the clothing is weirdly tight or baggy in strange places, the fit is just off.) A lot of them wear extremely informal clothes out and about. There's a lot of running shoes with random outfits-even button ups.

    Hey, I don't usually respond to vids but thought I would have to chip in here, given some of your dismissive responses to others. Firstly I watched the full three parts for this, and actually appreciate you taking the time to produce such content. I myself was first an 'expat and then became an immigrant: but this only existed in my mind. However, from my perspective this is an argument about semantics and cultural meaning. Frankly the immigration policies of most western countries do not create any distinction between the two - you are an immigrant or there on a temporary holiday or working visa etc etc - in the eyes of the law you are an immigrant. I feel your perspective has been coloured somewhat by the experience of living in Portugal and the other countries which have extremely receptive migration regimes for non-EU migrants (eg the PT digital nomad visa). In most of western and Northern Europe you can expect to be put in the same queue as those from Africa or Asia when it comes to arriving and staying beyond three months. Source; my own personal experience of living in Belgium and trust me, an American coming to work or study here is considered an immigrant. Full stop. What counts is your residency status (permanent or not). Debating over the meanings of word is all great until you have to deal with an immigration service or employment bureau. The only 'expat' status that exists in Belgium is for foreign executives working in international companies, and only means that they have to pay Belgian tax on their Belgian income. This regime is only applying to 20,000 or so high paid executives. Also, generally the term ex-pat is something very anglo specific and I think has its origins in the age of Empire. My Francophone friends would not use it and frankly the Dutch speakers will regard you as a new immigrant. Generally within the EU, there is a greater distinction between non-EU and EU migration, rather than some cultural focus on expat vs immigrant status. Thanks and keep up the good content.

    • @thecountryjumper
      @thecountryjumper 26 дней назад

      Dismissive comments? I don't agree with the idea that there is not a distinction except in our mind. I understand that people don't like the way that some of these words have been utilized in popular culture, however that doesn't take away from the fact that some people move abroad temporarily and others permanently and these words help define those differences. Do those opportunities exist for some passport holders and not others? Absolutely, and that's how the words ended up being so loaded. But their distinctions still matter. I would also disagree with the idea that temporary visas are the same as long term ones. I've had Student, Work, Working Holiday, and Residencies in six countries now in Asia, Australia, and Europe - there are absolutely differences in the ones that were more temporary and the ones that were not. All of that being said, I don't think any of these words matter to your process of moving to another country. However, they are still useful. For example, I live in Portugal as an immigrant and I am a US expat. I do my US taxes as an expat - that is my relationship with the US, they don't care that I am an immigrant, as it doesn't define my relationship with the US. Ultimately, these words exist and are used and people get endlessly triggered by them but there are times when they all have their uses as we need language to help us define the world around us.

    When leaving a country you emigrate. When moving into a country you immigrate. An expat is an expatriate… i.e. someone who has got citizenship elsewhere and lives outside their home country. A migrant is just someone who migrates… this means they move around a lot… generally this word is used for birds or animals… that migrate to different locations for water etc…. I’m not sure how migrant is used more colloquially.

    As someone who studied migration & immigration in the Mediterranean, these are quite accurate. In the movement of persons/people, there are a couple things to consider which are all based on the question “Why?”. This will bring statuses like refugee for example. A good example of an expat are those in a country for a contract job or for school. Peacecorps is an example of this. NGO workers that often travel to different countries can also be considered migrant workers. This is such a rich subject as there is historical importance to this facet of humanity. One other immigration term that isn’t talked enough as it is charge is the colonizer or imperialist which is another instance of movement of people & its power over the indigenous residents.

    • @thecountryjumper
      @thecountryjumper 26 дней назад

      Thanks for this constructive comment! I give some examples of possible situations in part 2. Colonizer is such an interesting one, thank you for bringing it up! I feel that people think of it as a historical term when there are in fact very real modern colonizing powers.

    • @popps33
      @popps33 26 дней назад

      @@thecountryjumper you're welcome! and yes, very much real. The one enlightening thing of migration studies is the intersection of history & human rights law. We get to a conversation about the interplay of power & demography. Another charged term is the settler (colonialism) which still exist today, the prime example is what is going on in Israel-Palestine and Countries that are external Territories/Colonies of another Country (France/US/etc).

    LoL you sound like a brexit apologist. The only folks who've ever used the word expat are basically British when they are abroad, and that's particularly done just not to be thought of as in the same group as every other migrant... which by itself now a days is largely used by stupid people to actually mean refugee so they don't look politically incorrect... and can say crap like "get rid of the migrant" instead of "let's not give an f about human rights and let them die." That may be the worse video I've seen... trying to define words by definitions that aren't even completely correct, without keeping into account the evolution and modern usages of the words in their contemporary meaning. Next we gonna see people go to the sea side and call themselves expat cuz they sleeping a night in a cheap motel for their holidays in ibiza. Hilarious

    1) the Portuguese are used to do as they are told 2) that libertarian attitude of "me against the State" that is so popular in the USA is merely residual in Portugal. On the contrary, the Portuguese have a tendency to try to lean on the State, so they don't see the State as the enemy 3) a reasonable part of the population have a hard time trying to make their salary last until the end of the month, those got really frightened that this disease would ruin their lives. They were anxious to follow instructions so that the problem would go away 4) the disease was actually great for a part of the population (my family included). People were receiving their salaries all the same (or subsidies to replace lost income - see, the State is not the enemy), working from home, no two-hour commute to Lisbon, earning the same with a lot less expenses 'Wow, this is great, lets just play along, do as we are told and receive all these subsidies and benefits that they are giving to us' 5) there is a general mindset of social solidarity. As soon as the problem started the government issued a decree saying that all immigrants that had not yet been issued with the paperwork to have their situation legalised in Portugal were provisionally automatically issued with the required documents. All the illegal Brazilians who had left behind a life of constant struggle in Brazil found themselves in a foreign country that instantly legalised them, no questions asked, and with immediate access to social security benefits, unemployment benefits, etc. They were crying in disbelief. You don't go against a State that treats you like a mother would. How many countries instantly legalised their illegal immigrants to avoid them having a hard time during the pandemic?
