    Thank you, Francesca, for this artfully explained recounting of the exploits of such an important family in Western history. As the old saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The Medici reigned centuries ago, and were able to influence so much because of their pivotal role in high finance. Bankers and those who work in the financial sector still, centuries after the Medici, hold disproportionate influence over our day to day lives and our political landscape. At least the the Medici cultivated the greatest artistic flourishing in human history, which is more than I can say for Goldman Sachs, Blackrock and Vanguard.

    Love this! The idea of the handshake to seal the marriage contract, the background on Romulus and Remus, and the connection between the Sabine Women and the threshold of Rome, are all fascinating. Alexander Mariotti sure makes learning history fun. He’s right. We are all Romans. Thanks for sharing this.

    I appreciate this great insight into the constant reverberating theme, throughout history, of betrayal. The reciprocal nature of betrayal is an interesting facet of the subject that is seldom brought up. Most stories of betrayal are written from the vantage point of a transgressor and someone who is transgressed against - between victimizer and victim. Many times, what is seen as a crime going in one direction is, in reality, simply a reaction to another sin that was already committed by the one who is now seen as being the victim of betrayal. That is certainly true in Julius Caesar's case, as Alexander so deftly described.

    Thank you for this interesting video, informing us of a historical figure few of us are aware of. It was very well produced and articulated. To answer the concluding question posed by Francesca (8:41 - 8:48) , while I like to think I would be a fair minded arbiter of justice and show mercy during the French Revolution, it is hard to say. The common French person, at that time, endured tremendous poverty. To experience that in the midst of all that decadence and the callousness of the aristocracy towards the common person, may have caused me to act just as irrationally. So I might have fallen victim to the same murderous zeal that swept up so many that took part in the French revolution. It is easy to get on one's moral high horse, when judging people throughout history, when you haven't walked in their shoes or endured anything close to what they have endured. Its easy to do the compassionate thing when times are easy. Its quite different to think so lucidly when one is experiencing abject poverty and despair.

    Nice video, but I think the greatest betrayal in history was Judas to Jesus in the last supper.

    • @bob50611
      @bob50611 Месяц назад

      wow i thought the same thing, but if you think about it Judas' betrayal didn't have such an impact on history as Caesar's betrayal did. The death of Caesar is the end of Roman republic and consequently the birth of Roman Empire that shaped the history of Europe with its languages, institutions, and traditions.

    • @nimrahsheikh8476
      @nimrahsheikh8476 Месяц назад

      I feel like the essential trait of betrayal is unexpectedness. Someone hurting you when you least expect them to or hurt coming from a place which you would never think of or plan to counter. Jesus knew about Judas and still let it happen as the work of destiny.
