Great movie. I read the book, too.

This movie presupposes that the public were more in the dark about the holocaust than they were. They would have been aware to varying degrees of vagueness, of summary executions etc. Just where exactly is this "piece of land" meant to have been? I suppose some of the momentum might have gone out of antisemitism after a decade, such that a fresh look at the holocaust might shock a 1960s German mind.

This is a contender for THE worst ever book to film adaptation. It’s as awful as the book is brilliant and I’m surprised Robert Harris didn’t ask for his name to be removed from the credits. It’s almost as if the screenwriter thought they could write a better story than the original because it bears such little resemblance to the book, starting with the opening scene. In the book, March is divorced and his son lives with his mother while March gets visitation rights every two weeks.

"kitchen Country children" is NOT a male chauvinism. "Don't ask , Don't tell" is legal COMPLACENy and rivals (or copy-cats) the Neglects of the Luftwaffe at D-day.

If the Fatherland had not been grounded byte Luftwaffe's cowardice , then the NORTH - SOUTH economic (CORPORATION market-share and labor wars would have made for the worlda better 2nd chance) ... i don't see much positive change. Rev. James S. David

another film Rutger Hauer appeared in was “Inside the Third Reich”, where he portrayed Albert Speer, Hitler’s close friend and architect. Rutger Hauer was a phenomenal actor, with an ability to take on a wide variety of roles.

This was good, but "Archangel" was much better IMO, a real masterpiece.

Possibly the most anachronisticaly screwed up film I've seen and I'm not talking about the Hitler winning the war that's fine. Its the props, now I wont do a list its to long. One of the TV's is a 1979 Nordmende and just about every other appliance is early to mid 70's not to mention the furniture. However the cars are all fine for 1964. Until I looked at the description I was convinced it was JF Kennedy's second go at president and it was 1974 and Hitler was 85 and in all fairness he looks older. Was enjoyable thanks.

Putin still in power at 80, That sounds about right. You gotta hand it to Germans for their anthem it is the best. I'm glad they didn't change it after the war.

I love to watch movies like this. My father used to watch movies like this, and documentaries about Hitler and the nazis. My father is no longer alive, but I'm now left watching them.

*They did made alternative history movie in 20th century in 90s and before Man in the High Castle cames out.*

Not a bad adaptation all in all, but Robert Harris' book is far more intriguing. If you haven't read it, I thoroughly recommend 'Archangel' too.

Alt History: "GREATER GERMAN REICH" "Dawn of A Decade" (1960) On New Years Hitler called meeting with his top generals and advisors in the Führer bunker under the Chancellory. In attendance were Goring, Himmler, Heydrich, Eichman, Mueller, Hess, Ribbentrop, Goebbles, Baldur von Schirach, Fieldmarshalls Manstein, Rommel, Dietrich, Donitz. At the meeting, Hitler discussed what would be the future course of actions for the German Reich. He began picking the new regime's leadership. Himmler would stay in command of the SS but in an expanded role. Heydrich was made Reich Commissar of Muscovy, Mueller was made Director of RSHA, Eichman was made head of the Gestapo, Göring was promoted to President of the Reich. Goebbels would still head the propaganda office of the Reich. Schirach would still head the Hitler Youth. Rommel would be made Chief of the General Staff. Dönitz would still head the Kriegsmarines. "Society" Life in the Fatherland is grand. The Reich's society is culturally dominant. The German population of the world is at 150 million people. "News Media" The press, the radio and the television are tightly controlled. The media is regulated to promote Nazi principles and ideologies. "Education" Academic life is male-dominated. Although it is possible for a woman to have an academic career. School is the way with which the German Reich indoctrinates and controls the citizenry, starting in its youth. The school year occupies most of the calendar year. The Hitler Jugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel are compulsory for children in the German Reich. German academics have key roles in the processes of racial ideology at the German Institute for Racial Studies, part of Friedrich Wilhelm University. The German Institute for Foreigners charged with instructing those foreigners who fortunately were classed as "Aryans", such as Argentines in the German language and culture. "Economy" Germany has a high standard of living. Unemployment rate was very low. European satellite states export high-quality consumer goods to Germany. German companies and organizations dominate the economies of the axis and occupied nations. Mercedes-Benz & Volkswagen are thriving. Zeiss produces the Reich's computers and software. The Reichsmark is the dominant world currency and is legal tender in the Greater German Reich, but most of the Reich's member states, territories, and allies have national currencies. Since the Reich dictates favorable exchange rates, the Reichsmark is readily accepted and apparently welcomed even in places in which it is not legal tender. "Military" The German war machine is the largest in the world, composed of 250 active divisions and 66 reserve. The Germans possess the greatest tanks in the world i.e. Maus IIIs, Panther IIIs, Landkruezer P. 1000 Ratte, (Battleship on wheels, Tiger IVs and the best aircraft i.e. the ME 270 (fighter jets), Lz 140 (Night Owl assault blimps) Lz 201 (Aircraft Carrier of the Skies), Horton Ho IXB (Night Hunter). The German surface fleet was also growing stronger with the development of new ship designs i.e. Tripitz IV, Bismarck II. Each German man between the ages of 17 to 30 must serve 3 years in the Wehrmacht and then may leave the service or continue being in the Wehrmacht. Because Berlin is populous, public transport (rapid transit trains, U-Bahn, and commuter railroads) is well developed; one rail station is the "South Station," near government offices. Belgium and the Netherlands are annexed into the Reich as a SS Defense region. In the occupied zones of France the Germans have set up military governments to control the various cities and country sides. The south of England and Wales is divided into military-economic commands directly administered by the German Army. European Charter The creation of a single economic system and political alliance in Europe had been on the mind of Hitler since the end of the war. He called a meeting of all the western and northern European nations on April 1st, 1950. The countries met in Geneva. The countries that were in attendance were the following i.e. Italy, Portugal, Spain, Vichy France, Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland and Finland. The EC countries are nominally free nations under their own governments and leaders but with limited sovereignty who are politically subordinate to Germany in all but name. This is symbolized by the Nazi flag flown over the EC headquarters being twice as large as those of the other member states. "Greater Bulgaria" is formed of Macedonia+Thrace+Moesia The Balkan states i.e. Croatia, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania and Serbia remain independent outside of the EC, but are still subject to German rule. The Germans interfere in their internal affairs, especially in applying racial ideology. In the east, Poland is still ruled as a colony by the General Government. The former Soviet territories west of the Urals have been divided into four Reichkommissariats: "Ostland" (Belarus & the Baltic states) "Taurida" (Ukraine+Odessa+Crimea) "Caucasus" "Muscovy" (Mosow-Urals)

What makes this movie so unrealistic is the scenario of Hitler still being alive in 1960, the Russians still fighting the Germans in 1960s (seriously?) and the U.S. government simply accepting defeat to Germany, especially after crushing Japan. None of those fantasies is plausible. Hitler would not have lived another 5 years. The leadership replacing him would have made a power vacuum that would have paved the way for the demise of the Reich, even without warfare. If the Russians had been so tied up fighting the Germans for years, communism would have flopped in both Russia and China. Any U.S. government cooperating with the NAZIs would not be able to maintain power at home. The new government would find it in their economic and political interests to undermine the Reich any way they could and would likely succeed, with the NAZI states falling like dominoes.

This isn't "HQ" by any stretch of the imagination.

I often wonder why the German characters in these films sometimes have American accents and some speak English with no accent, IE like a British subject would speak. In the old days these kinds of films would have everyone speaking English like a British subject and as a child I wondered why they had British accents rather than German accents. But as an adult I reason that there is no British accent. That is real English. It has no foreign accent. So it is correct. To have them speaking English with German accents would be preposterous. The only way to deal with it properly would have them all speak German. No foreign accent. That would make the film very much more engaging. SS men are always more scary whilst screaming in German about how they will draw and quarter your infant if you don't tell them what you know.

A bit disappointed that Rutger Hauer, as he was dying in a rain-drenched phone box didn’t say, “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die”

The premise of the book and the movie are entirely unrealistic, I believe. Read "In the presence of mine enemies" by Harry Turtledove. The Reich would more likely have elevated the Holocaust into a great deed, as it does in that book.

Great cast, but a really ropy adaptation. It's a very long time since I've read the book, but I can't remember if this is faithful to it, for instance whether the crazy actress they've got Jean Marsh to play is even in it. But the book is better than this!

this needs a re-make. the original book was absolutely stunning - a decent treatment would make a fine counterpart to 'The Man In The High Castle'

After the US withdraws. Churchill Barely escaped from Britain with his life tells that the Germans invaded England during the summer or somehow the military and people rise up and overthrows Churchill for the massive deaths at Normandy and the military declares Martial Law and uses Pro Nazi Brits to form a Provisional Government and Edward takes control of British Troops in the Caribbean

I imagine with Edward on the Throne somehow he controls his Empire as an Ally of Hitler leading to the British Empire helping the Germans go all the way to the Urals allowing German bases in the Americas. Then when the talks fail the first uprising is in the Caribbean leading to British Exile troops toppling Edward. Possibly the United States, China and Canada alongside with the Western Exile forces sailing all the way to Europe starting in Iceland and marching all the way to Berlin.

The book, Robert Harris's first, is stunning and this was thereore the first film adaption. Even he agreed it was disappointing. Still - good story!!

When one has to "suspend reality" for a movie, the acting and plot have to be excellent to allow the watcher to get embroiled in the story. This Movie succeeded in doing this. One factoid, the New York Times did print an article on these atrocities in Early June 1942, when the D* center Chelimo was opened. Another Article was written by the times in late summer with more details. The state department was well aware of the M* of jews in Europe in Early 1942; However Breckinridge Long -- the undersecretary of European interfered with any attempt to intervene and save Jewish Refugees.

I wonder if they'll make a similar movie about Palestine in 30 years.
