Osteotome Sharpening Grind Deburr Polish Whetstone
Showing how I narrow the bevel after improper sharpening. Relying on a deburring wheel for sharpening is fast but its easy to lose track of the original bevel. A fresh grind is required to restore the original bevel. I still use a deburring wheel but I also use a whetstone to true up the final cutting edge.

Sharpening small surgical scissors on a variable speed belt grinder. Must shorten tips to eliminate damage from pitting. Big scissors can be sharpened the same way. It was180 grit in this video. Grind was a little too coarse. Maybe should have used a finer belt for this one...but you get the point. 😂
Sharpening Scissors with a File

Some smaller scissors need to be sharpened with a file. Large scissors can also be sharpened this way, so long as care is taken to secure scissors and make steady purposeful strokes with a SHARP FILE.
9 KNIVES 20 MINUTES $100

Significant money can be earned sharpening knives. I charge a base fee of $100 for the first ten items and $5 for each additional item. My minimum charge for mobile service is $100. 9 Knives usually takes around 20 minutes for me to process these days. This job would have taken about an hour back when I first started my business. I used to charge $5 per item with a 10 item minimum. Inflation ha...

This van is a 2005 118" Dodge Sprinter. In 2015 I remodeled my work area using Black Formica. The dark backdrop helped me keep eyes focused on the lighted work. Formica is super easy to clean too! Hope you get some good ideas for your van setup. The process of building a sharpening business has been extremely empowering for me. This was my 4th rig. No photos of my first one, but it was a 1990 T...

Useful video. Thank you for sharing. What kind of belt (type/grit) did you use to remove the hump at the beginning?
I use a #180 grit resin bond zirconia alumina on polyester cloth. The belt was not fresh on this video. If it is too fresh the grind will a bit coarse. In that case it would take longer to blend the grind on the deburr wheel. Just gotta experiment til you like the finish. Thanks for commenting!
Bummer. Curious what was the outcome for your van here?
My van was not legal to register in California. DEF injection system had failed. Mercedes claimed there were no available sensors because of the pandemic. Van had been down for nearly a year. Had 5 failed repairs. Milage 99,800 which was close to the warranty expiration. My business was almost dead. Frustrated, I went to purchase another van from a used car dealer. Told that dealer my problem. He then refused to sell to me until I went back to Mercedes and insisted they keep my van until they honored the warranty. He said they would fix it if I would pushed the issue. I did what he said. I left the van and clearly stated "I do not want it back until it is fixed". That changed everything. The repair took just an hour. Service rep assured me it was fixed permanently this time. I was doubtful at first but now Im at 120,000 and van is running strong. Had taken a job during the down time. Now I am back running my business as a side gig now. Thanks for asking!
@@MikeTheSharpener Thanks for the reply Mike! Dang dude sorry you were down with your van for a year, that is insane! I just bought a 2012 with the same engine that intially had 100k. It needed the basic stuff, transmission flush (every 50k), brake flush (every 2 years), fuel filter (was at 35k, but I will change it going forward at 15k myself), oil change every 7k myself going forward, PCV valve every 80k. Always keep DEF topped off every 1k, and try to always keep fuel topped off as best you can. They are not like a gas Toyota LOL. I had a wheel sensor go out and a shop said I needed to replace the ABS unit. And all it took was cleaning the sensor off and vacuuming the hole, sensor did not even need replacing, let alone the $6k ABS unit LOL. It is hard to find good honest mechanics for the diesel Sprinters.
@@GlennInLaguna Im figuring my problems were no the norm. Im pretty sure you will probably have a good run with your Sprinter. Mercedes builds a great product. Thanks again for commenting!!
Hamaguri is good machines ?
I cant no longer say which machine is best. This video was made before I migrated away from salon sharpening and into surgical instrument sharpening. Many new ideas and machines have come along since then. I believe the process is pretty much the same though. Thanks for commenting!!
Ear rape
Nice, is the process the same for normal scissors?
A sharp file is pretty critical but yes. The process is the same for large scissors 👍 Thanks for watching!
Great video great set up getting ready to debut my sprinter sharpening Van January 2025 thank you for your time knifeguy831 harleybayo
Good to hear you are going with Mercedes! Ive driven lots of other sharpening rigs. Sprinter has been the best so far. Thanks for commenting!!
What grit do you stop at before going to the buffing wheel?
I did not show it but I used a 'Fine' grade ScotchBrite wheel fixed to the other side of the buffer. Gotta be light on that wheel though. Otherwise the edge will become rounded too much before buffing. Thanks for watching!
Great thanks !
A música é um fuk americano 👍
Why not test on hair that's what the end user is going to be cutting.
It doesn’t matter what one uses to test sharpness. What matters is having the sensitivity to notice the subtle differences between sharp and almost sharp. Thanks for commenting!
I'm somewhere halfway there
“The low quality of that same dull experience” Mike? Of course you do. Of course you do!!!!!
Thanks for commenting!!
Sorry but the hideous music irritated me in 12 seconds flat.
Thanks for saying something. And thanks for watching!
Nice
WTF you doing?! Wrong side! i sharpe my knife in seconds!
Yeah, I was baffled at this. Don't let this guy near your knives. OR wait, maybe he's only seen cheep bread knives? I dunno, this is bad.
Good one, but it would have been really helpful if you would have included a link to the conical burr you use. There are so many different sizes, grits, and compositions to choose from.
In the UK these knives are also known as bread saws. There are plenty of high quality examples to be had very cheaply at car boot sales ... because most folks have no idea how to sharpen them. I have also had good results using the rounded edge stone wheels used in chainsaw sharpening tools..... very quick and effective
Thanks for your comment! I have also used the edge of my grinding wheel to shape these scallops. Couldn't keep my hand steady enough though. More often than not, I distorted the pattern too badly. Turned to this rotary burr and polish method because I could get more consistent results.
Please sharpen my blades
How do you learn to do this?
Hello there! There are salon shears sharpening courses at many sharpening conventions. NTBSG is an organization which teaches and certifies Shears Sharpeners. There is Bonika Shears, and on RUclips you can check out JimSharpBlog. Thanks for watching!
This is a tear down not a setup
Thanks for the info. Just had a huge order of these and these tips were helpful.

Alternate title: "How to turn a carving knife into a butchered knife"
Nice comment. Thanks for watching!
So what wheel do i get for that
The wheels come in course or fine for this machine. Gotta check with Wolff Industries for more info. This particular unit runs about $1200. The wheels run about $250 each. It’s the fine wheel used in this video. Thanks for watching!
Well Sir, I just found you on you tube. Second video. What, I say, WHAT is wrong with the van? 🤔 Those sprinters are on my want list. I have bookmarked you. 71 yrs old and getting back into sharpening. You have much more experience than i have, so I will be looking to learn all I can from you. Hope you can fix the van soon.
Well you wont believe the van situation. I cant even make sense of it. A computer chip that controlled the emissions system was out and unavailable for nearly a year. It was under warranty but the part was so scarce that Mercedes didnt prioritize my repairs until I finally removed all my equipment and took it back. Said I was considering legal action. They fixed it within two hours. Drove it for 2 months then outfitted it again. Then it got rear-ended the first day out. This is my second Sprinter. I was just frustrated about the situation when I started making these videos. Mercedes makes a fabulous product. I believe the pandemic caused the lack of availability for the particular part. The 2005 Sprinter lasted 275k when I sold it fo $6000. Saw it for sale on craigslist last mont for $18,000. Good luck sharpening. Plenty of dull stuff out there. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

Nice rescue
Thanks!
Dunno why did this video randomly pop up on my recommended tab, but it’s oddly satisfying in a way
love the work you did!! was wondering where you got the digital microscope i can use one the magnifying glass i use don’t work for me now.
Ebay has many options.
Great video! Love the microscope slides and the free-hand work on the ride line side. It’s nice that the machine you can use water on to prevent ruining the temper. Nicely done Mate!
cool percussion. Who?

How can i buy the angle fix
. I’d love to see the 100,000 grit result. Maybe 100,000 grit would be 2 atoms
Love the video! Would you be able to sharpen shears on the Shapton stones alone? Granted not a professional quality shear but a cheapo shear?
mistermatsuda, Yes, one could do all the work with the Shapton stones. Smarter financially too 😉
The design is slightly different from the Stretch 6' from appropedia.org but that's okay. This one gives you a little more headroom:floorspace and there are fewer cuts. It's not as mathematically ideal, but for those who dgaf about geometry, it's wonderful (Just don't expect to be allowed in to Plato's Academy...)! 8-)
Jennifer Grove, you stimulate joy with your intellectual observations! Thank you 🙏
way too much sharpening the back face..
Taguchi Yosuke ok
Why is the other side on shears always finished on a machine or flat hone wile even the most expencive and delicate knives are always hand finished on stones
fantastycznie
Most all factories only use 3000 microns for ride finish, You are just pissing in the wind using 16,000. Waste of time.
See Drews comment below regarding the facrory finish. The first thing I do with brand new, quality chisels and plane irons is sharpen them. When you dig into ebony or other dense woods with a high silica content, you learn within seconds how much of a difference a finely honed edge can make.
@@conankilcoyne We are talking scissors.
@@sharpone40 You have a fair point, if your short reply relates to the material that a scissors is asked to cut and the law of diminishing returns. It may not be worth it to go that high for paper. I haven't enough experience to expand on my original comment. All the best, C

With the Thera band is not possible. Must be a fake!! I was try it with two brand new expansive shears and it was not bossible !!
Yes, it is possible if honed gently so as to not round the new edge
