Osteotome Sharpening Grind Deburr Polish Whetstone
Showing how I narrow the bevel after improper sharpening. Relying on a deburring wheel for sharpening is fast but its easy to lose track of the original bevel. A fresh grind is required to restore the original bevel. I still use a deburring wheel but I also use a whetstone to true up the final cutting edge.

I used to charge $5 per item with a 10 item minimum. Inflation ha...

    Useful video. Thank you for sharing. What kind of belt (type/grit) did you use to remove the hump at the beginning?

    • @MikeTheSharpener
      @MikeTheSharpener 26 дней назад

      I use a #180 grit resin bond zirconia alumina on polyester cloth. The belt was not fresh on this video. If it is too fresh the grind will a bit coarse. In that case it would take longer to blend the grind on the deburr wheel. Just gotta experiment til you like the finish. Thanks for commenting!

    Bummer. Curious what was the outcome for your van here?

    • @MikeTheSharpener
      @MikeTheSharpener 29 дней назад

      My van was not legal to register in California. DEF injection system had failed. Mercedes claimed there were no available sensors because of the pandemic. Van had been down for nearly a year. Had 5 failed repairs. Milage 99,800 which was close to the warranty expiration. My business was almost dead. Frustrated, I went to purchase another van from a used car dealer. Told that dealer my problem. He then refused to sell to me until I went back to Mercedes and insisted they keep my van until they honored the warranty. He said they would fix it if I would pushed the issue. I did what he said. I left the van and clearly stated "I do not want it back until it is fixed". That changed everything. The repair took just an hour. Service rep assured me it was fixed permanently this time. I was doubtful at first but now Im at 120,000 and van is running strong. Had taken a job during the down time. Now I am back running my business as a side gig now. Thanks for asking!

      @@MikeTheSharpener Thanks for the reply Mike! Dang dude sorry you were down with your van for a year, that is insane! I just bought a 2012 with the same engine that intially had 100k. It needed the basic stuff, transmission flush (every 50k), brake flush (every 2 years), fuel filter (was at 35k, but I will change it going forward at 15k myself), oil change every 7k myself going forward, PCV valve every 80k. Always keep DEF topped off every 1k, and try to always keep fuel topped off as best you can. They are not like a gas Toyota LOL. I had a wheel sensor go out and a shop said I needed to replace the ABS unit. And all it took was cleaning the sensor off and vacuuming the hole, sensor did not even need replacing, let alone the $6k ABS unit LOL. It is hard to find good honest mechanics for the diesel Sprinters.

    In the UK these knives are also known as bread saws. There are plenty of high quality examples to be had very cheaply at car boot sales ... because most folks have no idea how to sharpen them. I have also had good results using the rounded edge stone wheels used in chainsaw sharpening tools..... very quick and effective

      Thanks for your comment! I have also used the edge of my grinding wheel to shape these scallops. Couldn't keep my hand steady enough though. More often than not, I distorted the pattern too badly. Turned to this rotary burr and polish method because I could get more consistent results.

    Well Sir, I just found you on you tube. Second video. What, I say, WHAT is wrong with the van? 🤔 Those sprinters are on my want list. I have bookmarked you. 71 yrs old and getting back into sharpening. You have much more experience than i have, so I will be looking to learn all I can from you. Hope you can fix the van soon.

    • @MikeTheSharpener
      @MikeTheSharpener Год назад

      Well you wont believe the van situation. I cant even make sense of it. A computer chip that controlled the emissions system was out and unavailable for nearly a year. It was under warranty but the part was so scarce that Mercedes didnt prioritize my repairs until I finally removed all my equipment and took it back. Said I was considering legal action. They fixed it within two hours. Drove it for 2 months then outfitted it again. Then it got rear-ended the first day out. This is my second Sprinter. I was just frustrated about the situation when I started making these videos. Mercedes makes a fabulous product. I believe the pandemic caused the lack of availability for the particular part. The 2005 Sprinter lasted 275k when I sold it fo $6000. Saw it for sale on craigslist last mont for $18,000. Good luck sharpening. Plenty of dull stuff out there. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

    The design is slightly different from the Stretch 6' from appropedia.org but that's okay. This one gives you a little more headroom:floorspace and there are fewer cuts. It's not as mathematically ideal, but for those who dgaf about geometry, it's wonderful (Just don't expect to be allowed in to Plato's Academy...)! 8-)
