I am a blacksmith in Lafayette, Indiana. I use forging, welding, and woodworking to build a variety of projects.
Forging a Simple Christmas Ornament
Handmade ornaments make great Christmas gifts and sell well around the holidays. In this video I forge a simple Christmas ornament with two forge welds and a twist. I also go over making copper ornament hooks. These look a lot better than the generic green wire hooks and are easy to make.
If you are wanting to practice your forge welding for basket twists, this type of ornament would be good for you. With only one piece to weld, there is less that can go wrong in the process.

Forging a Scroll to Fit Your Drawing

In this video I forge a scroll to fit the drawing from a previous video. This scroll is sized to fit an ABANA Level II Grille, but the techniques can be used for any size scroll.
Drawing a Scroll to fit the ABANA Level II Grille

In this video, I go through the steps to lay out a scroll. I saw a video by Gary Huston showing this method here, ruclips.net/video/55XWKh6hDhg/видео.htmlsi=cZhBPVR3iI-OLd . I worked out how to calculate the size of scrolls and wrote up the method for ABANA's Hammers Blow. If you are a member you can see the article at www.abana.org . In a future video I will go through the the math behind sizi...
Drawing a Rectangle with a Compass

When making an ABANA Level II grille, you have the option of making your own grille drawing. In this video, I will be drawing a rectangle to the dimensions of the ABANA Level II grille. This is the first video in a series that I am making to show the layout of designs, using the ABANA drawing as an example.

Heating up the anvil with a torch helps your workpiece hold heat longer
Good idea heating the anvil. I will usually thick flat piece in the forge while it heats up and then lay that on the anvil. I’ve never considered a torch.
Great idea for a nice Xmas project. Thanks for sharing another demo and happy holidays.
Thank you Larry. I hope you’re doing well. Happy Holidays!
Part way into designing a Scroll Bender (No Forge here 😉 ) and looking at the actual scroll I want the form to be. For the PC/CAD crowd the following might help. Inkscape has a built in extension that will plot functions, you will need to do some searching but the formulas are out there. Second is get yourself a 'free' signup for Onshape and it has a built in spiral generator then print it or even make a 3D model of it. Still a wannabe forge owner when I find some space 😁
Thank you for the suggestions. I'll check out those programs.
@@suttonindustrialarts With Onshape you generate the spiral on a Cone and adjust that pitch to change the outward progression rate. I still kind of like the 4:1 'approximation' from the series of quadrants and I actually drew that in Fusion 360 as it won't do Logarithmic spirals before I found the other options to import into it.
14 minutes plus heat time for one scroll?
They do take some time to make. That time can vary. I’ve done some very quickly and had some take even longer. In this case, I haven’t forged a scroll like this in a couple of months and it took more time. I often make a jig to speed up the production time if I have a lot of them to do.
I am trying to locate your video about making a scroll to match a drawing
@ Huh?
I'd be upset too
Для чего этот инструмент?
Great video. I love monkey tools for making rivets. They will stick-majorly-when you first make them. It’s from the grooving of the drill. A few tips I learned the hard way for anyone interested: Sand down the inside with a narrow piece of steel rod wrapped with some sandpaper-put that in your drill and go at it. Put a drop of oil or coal dust in the monkey tool before putting the hot rivet in. Once you’ve formed the rivet in the monkey tool, quench the monkey tool and rivet in water. This will help you remove the rivet easier. It takes around 15 or 20 times of using the monkey tool before it otherwise gets smooth as butter. Those rivets won’t be as difficult to remove once broken in. If anyone has an idea of how to get the rivets out easier, I’m all ears.
Not using a monkey tool would be my tip. Using something like a nailheader worked better for me as the area that can stick is much smaller
Good job, most honest hammer making video I've seen.
Where the hell did you find a rawhide mallet??? Lol they’re near impossible to find these days 😢
A friend had it. I also use rubber, but the rawhide doesn’t smell as bad.
They're not hard to make...
Amazon has plenty
this is a great time to have a smooth (not polished) anvil face Fantastic descriptive smithing and narration Thankyou for sharing
Outstanding skills!!
What is a hardy tool?
It is a bottom die that fits into the square hole of an anvil. This one will be a v shaped bottom die.
Now that's a big, strong man.
Thanks for making this awesome video! Easy to follow, great tips for completing the project. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
