This truck was sold as-is not running at auction, so I took a big risk and bought it. The body was removed, frame was sandblasted and painted, and the truck was fully detailed. A few issues were fixed and some new tires were installed.
Selling my Cat IT28B Tool Carrier Loader

In winter these machines are in high demand. Buying one in the summer and selling it in winter can be a money making venture. I used this machine around the yard for a few months and posted it for sale when the snow hit. It sold the day after I advertised it.

    Damn, you guys did a nice job with this truck...

      Thank you! These are very rare trucks so they are worth putting some time and money into. The next owner will get a truck in almost new condition for half the price. And we get to be proud of the trucks we work on! Seems to work out for everyone in the end.

    Hi 👋 Is it possible to install 16R20 wheels on this truck? Does it fit at the rare?

    Nice video again mate. I thought all the CAT R80s was 4WD? Cannot you fix the 4WD on your 2 other machines?

    • @hdtrucks4042
      @hdtrucks4042 8 месяцев назад

      They made 2wd and 4wd versions. Parts are getting hard to find for the older 4x4 versions. Seems like the internals pile up over time (likely low on fluid and not properly maintained) and once that happens it’s easiest to just abandon the 4x4 feature.

      @@hdtrucks4042 Okay, that makes sense and is interesting. Are the 2WD machines still more off road capable than a normal forklift, I assume?

    Wow! Really nice job mate, looks almost like new. I think this was the only rough terrain forklift Caterpillar ever made, including some smaller models too of this series. If I come across one I will definitely buy it for my yard, even 2 like you if I can, would be more efficient and then when one breaks I still have a 2nd one to finish the job. Does it have a diesel engine? Really like the idea that it has a manual gearbox, simple and reliable. Would like to see some more videos of your CAT R80s in the future. Keep up the good work!

      Every one I’ve come across has a Perkins diesel engine. Super reliable and easy to find engine parts! I’ve seen them with 40,000 hours still running strong (probably been overhauled but that’s still impressive). If you find one, buy it! They are like the Chevy 350 of forklifts. Reliable, easy to find parts, run forever! 4x4 parts are the only difficult thing to find in my experience.

      @@hdtrucks4042 Wow, that is very impressive. I will definitely buy one if I come across it, ideally I would want a 4WD one but the 2WD would also be very good to have. My yard isn't that rough. Is the gearbox it have just like a standard manual gearbox with a clutch? I saw in one of your videos it has 4 gears, how fast can you comfortably drive? I saw one forum on the Internet which says the top speed is 30 mph in 4th gear. I know a forklift isn't really meant for speed but would be good to know how fast it can drive. What is the going price for a second hand one? Thank you.

    • @hdtrucks4042
      @hdtrucks4042 8 месяцев назад

      @@Chris-wz4zrThey are more of a shuttle shift transmission. There’s a clutch but it’s just for when you need to load a truck or get into a pallet. Don’t need to use it for shifting. Also, you typically select your appropriate gear from parked and leave it in that gear. I don’t think they are meant to shift between gears while moving, but I could be wrong! They are very fast in high gear, which is meant for when the forks are empty and you are moving between yards or across a big yard. Don’t need 4x4 to get around, but in winter it’s definitely better to have around here. I sell these used for around $29,000 Canadian typically, but they are getting hard to find. Where are you located? Good luck with the search!

    • @Chris-wz4zr
      @Chris-wz4zr 8 месяцев назад

      @@hdtrucks4042 Okay that's quite interesting again. Is there also a toque converter in the mix to prevent it from stalling or do you also use the clutch to pull away? It's good to know there is a road gear for when you need it. Does the rear axle have leaf springs? I think I saw saw so in one of your videos, I guess the front axles doesn't because it needs to carry the load. Doesn't most forklift have solid axles all round? I am located in South Africa, snow isn't so common here. I don't know if I'll find one here but I'll try. The demand for older type machine here is insane because most people say that older machines is more reliable which there are maybe.

      It’s between $3,000 and $6,000 these days depending on the truck and how busy the paint shop is. If they’re slow, they price more aggressively.

    Something I've always wondered. I'm not no expert but let me know if my thoughts are wrong. Why are these trucks not used for hotshot trucking or regular hauling? I've heard that since they are dump trucks, they would not make good candidates for owner operators who want to do hotshotting or hauling. Are they just not viable for those industries?

    • @hdtrucks4042
      @hdtrucks4042 2 года назад

      These 6x6 trucks are generally geared for low end power rather than speed, and will require more maintenance in the long run. Typically, if you don’t need the 6 wheel drive for daily operations then it’s better to go with the rear wheel drive model.
