YT SZEPTER CORE 4 GRAVEL & TRAIL RIDE
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Год назад
I take my new YT SZEPTER CORE 4 for a trail ride in North County San Diego on one of the offroad sections used on the BWR event. The route offers a variety of surfaces, conditions and challenges. With the recent rains the route was a little slippy in places, but the capabilty of the Szepter with it's front suspension fork and nimble mountian bike type handling rose to the challenge and provided...

1st week with my New 2022 CANYON GRIZL CF SL7 1By #CanyonBicycles #Canyonbikes
thanks this is helpful! I mostly do steep gravel hill climbs with rocky rutted downhills. I had a trek Domane but ended up selling it because it wasn't great for gravel and really uncomfortable reach. I realized I prefer more upright mtn bike geometry. specialy so I can pedal out of the sattle. I'm debating between this & stormchaser sus. I keep hearing how great this is for climbs, so this might be the one.
Get a Szepter! I still love riding mine. The more technical the trail the better!!
The Grizl CF SL 8 comes with the new 12 speed GRX so if I go with that can I just swap out the cassette to a 10-51 and be good to go? Front chainring is 40 I think. 40/51 would be pretty solid for steep climbs with load
The derailleur hanger might be long enough...I think I remember reading that it was. Try and see. If it does not work then get the Garbaruk stuff. The pulley wheels are a nice add on and much easier to keep clean.
im pretty sold on this bike! I have a trek endurance bike pretending to be a gravel bike and it gets a little too rough on decents.
So to make sure i dont misunderstand… Garbaruk cage and pulley wheels? Original grx derailleur? Possible also with 11-50 cassette? Longer chain?
Hey, yes cage and pulley wheels. Orig derlr. Yes. 11-50 cassette available but longer chain is needed. They were very helpful answering my questions. Send them a msg. I dont have that bike anymore, but for sure the Garabuk parts were a big improvement.
@@bgfbtnx! I really appreciate it! A local dealer got garbaruk parts, probably gotta pay him a visit! :)
Can you attach the gopro mount on top?
It's designed to attach to bottom. Why would you want it on the top?
Hey… thanks for the post. Can you share what 611 seat you have? Thanks!
1x Saddle 611 ERGOWAVE® CrMo - 15 cm for $104.99 each. this is the model I got.
How was the clearance in the back? Would a 50mm fit?
45 is the biggest. The 42's that it comes with measure out a little bigger and they work great in most conditions...even over river rocks. I was going to immediately go with a 45, but after riding in different conditions I felt the stock tires to be really good.
just bought the New Core 2. Very excited for that bike to show up. It ticked every box for me. Everything I need and nothing I don't. thanks for the video!
Hey @keeganpetersen3618 COOL! I'm excited for you! I still get excited going on rides with mine.
Still happy with the bike?
Hey @ANiCKiN Yes, It has been a lot of fun and very solid. I use it on mtb trails as well as road and gravel still very pleased with performance and quality. I did have an issue with the post and dealing with YT was a pleasure. They coordinated getting the seat post fixed by Sram in a hurry. Other than that I've not needed to change or upgrade anything....even the saddle is good. if you're thinking about getting one go for it !!
@@bgfb Thanks for the info! I will probably buy one as well. :)
Just wondered how much capability you are giving up on normal road/ gravel compared to the GRIZL?
. This bike is 23 pounds, so I'm sure a high end Grizl build would be lighter and faster on road and light gravel roads, but then when going on more techy trails the advantage would swing back this way. The geometry is a big factor. When on the road I don't feel that it's slow at all. It's just not going to compare to a fast road bike.
Great video , my stuff is coming in this week from garbaruk also have a GRZL in North county San Diego. How many links is your chain ,116? Also the cassette lock socket is it a specific one ? Or any will work?
Probably seems like a stupid question but how does the dropper activate? Is it from an independent lever or does it use the mech in the left shifter?
Hey @the_yankee_joiner It is operated by the left hand shift lever.....
Hey @gavin2804 seems like you would be fine with the XL if you want a little bigger frame.
Hey! thanks for the post this has been helpful. I'm in the same position as many trying to decide between an L and XL. I'm 74" tall with a 36.5" inseam in boxers. Canyon recommends a L and I managed to test ride a L yesterday that someone local had. It felt good though I end up with the seat fairly high with my long legs. What's your thoughts? appreciate the help!
Thanks for reviewing. How good/ bad are they in terms of preventing fogging? They only have cut outs at the bottom whereas the Oakley JBs have cut outs both at the top and bottom. Wondering if you saw a difference between the two in that regard?
Hey man thank you for the info! I really DON'T want to buy the Grizl8CF and I definitely missed the sale on the 7. Zero experience with CX/GX.. Been on road bikes for quite some time, and Id like to transition to something more versatile/comfortable, especially for commuting to and from work. There is a G7 somewhat close to me for a decent price, low mileage but its and XS and Canyon recommended a S for me; 5'9 32 inseam. Glad to know there is a chance due to larger frame sizing? But maybe I'll triple check my measurements and give Canyon a ring. Cheers man! Happy riding
What is the derailleur model? I have the same bike and love it want to buy the same derailleur leg etc from the same company, cheers!
@jorgemena13 the name of the company is Garbaruk they are in Poland. Very helpful to make sure I got the right parts and shipped quickly
hey dad
Hey @lilaandstar ❤
Thanks for sharing! Did you end up posting any video on how you installed the dropper post? I'm curious to know how is the dropper post actuated - is it attached to the left brake/shift lever? If so, how do you like that setup for actuating the dropper?
Hey @suspendersperspective5341 The bike came with the equipment (the manual dropper post with the cable routed thru the frame and attached to the lft hand brake) It's actuated with the GRX lever with an internal swipe. I would say that the system worked good and I had no issues when my seat post was not slipping, which caused other issues with the cable and whole system. I have a video covering that. Aside from the issues I had, I like that GRX + Dropper system. I just think the Canyon seat post clamping system is under engineered for larger/heavier riders. (not enough material there with the plastic sleeve and tiny pinch bolt to do the job) let me know what other questions you have.
I'm 6' 3" currently on a large Specialized Turbo Vado SL that fits perfectly, My brothers 6'5" and has the XL in a turbo Como , I fit on both but his bike is huge in comparison to mine , I'm just more confident on the large 😊
Thanks for the back-to-back comparison. Very useful! I was surprised by how much smoother the bar mount is than the chesty - my chest mount footage gets a fair amount of those shaky "boingggg" moments like your video had (nice sound effect) which gets annoying when riding off-road or on really bumpy terrain.
Fellow tall guy 😊. If you felt good on an XXL then I will too.
hey a quick question, the one you say is a go pro one, at minute 1:11 how is called, I need something like that, thank you
try this tinyurl.com/yc6nbpdv
wow a bike that actually looks good in xl or xxl
How do you like the XXL size? I'm 194cm and not sure about XL or XXL
Hey @mantasnau Go for the XXL..It's the right fit. No standover issues.I'm same height and handling is amazing!!
Did you look at fezzari shafer at all? Any thoughts on that bike vs the szepter?
Hey , @ts-rf7er I did not as I fell in love with the YT within first few minutes of ride. Seems like Fezzari did a good job with geometry vs many other options out there. What really sold me about the YT is the overall handling and the way it rails around corners.. Much much different than most competition out there and that makes it much more capable on rougher trails without losing out on the road. Wait til YT has a sale....I love it !! No regrets.
@@bgfb thanks, did you happen to weigh yours by chance? I am guessing coming from a light race bike like the stigmata and going to this must have added 5 lbs or so ?
Hey @@ts-rf7er , Yes. Some trade-offs were expected with the differences. Thats about the right weight diff. The positive gains are noticeable straightaway. More capable with running bigger tires and having the suspension up front. Bonus.
I agree, they come up BIG, so order a size smaller that you would usually - and that goes for all gravel bikes. At 6'1" the L was too big. The M provided much more comfort, ability to move around the bike, and reduced risk to my "junk" 🙂
Whats your inseam? And is the M not too agressive with that height? I am 6‘1 as well
Hey @bgfb. Thanks for the helpfull video. I am 6 foot tall with a 33,5 inch inseam. The Canyon websites put me on a medium, I feel a large would be better? Help please
Hey@SuperJannie01 I think you should be OK with a Large based on your inseam length. That is the critical area for obvious reasons......Reach to bars is compact and is not an issue. If getting one with dropper post see my other videos on setting that up before attaching bars. Enjoy!
What a blessing to be riding through that terrain! Thx for sharing this setup. I’m getting my Grizl in today and looking forward to seeing how it climbs
Hey @chefjon6023 Yes, It's nice to have year round trail riding for sure. Enjoy your new bike!
Just bought one today. Thought of switching the tires for road riding for now. What would you suggest?
Hey @Malcolmgomez5925, If yours came with Maxxis Ramblers I would leave them on and add a few PSI if needed. My experience is that they roll pretty well. On my previous bike, I messed around with swapping tires and even and extra set of rims. It just turns into a hassle and gets expensive. There is always going to be a compromise, so i would just keep it simple and save money for things that you will need to change on that bike like the gearing. Enjoy!
I came very, very close to buying that bike. I ended up buying a Cannondale SuperSix CX instead when my local bike shop had it on sale for 20% off. That frame is just beautiful. I just saw that the Szepter is on sale. If it was on sale at the time of my buy, I probably would have gotten it. I do love the SuperSix though.
Hey @DaveCM Cool ! Although I don't own one, I'm a big fan of Cannondale bikes. I've ridden their bikes with classic geometry and think work great! Enjoy the new bike, I'm sure it is a blast to ride!
Still deciding this or the Lauf Seigla. Very hard choice.
@eastbaycyclist8830 thats a tough one. I think the current Core 4 spec at the discounted price is a great deal. Plus I like the suspension tech versus the lauf fork. It works better across more terrain....except for maybe washboard...
This is me right now! Which did you choose? @eastbaycyclist8830
@@mootroomoo I got the NINER MCR RDO 9. Full sus gravel 😅
how does this bike handle on tarmac? Is it slower than other gravel bikes?
@Fredrik00 same as others I’ve owned and ridden. Very comfortable to ride in the drops is a plus.
@@bgfb Thanks alot, i think i will sell my roadbike and trailbike, in order to buy this instead. Seems like a good compromise when you are not racing
@@MysticMac000 you’ll love it. It’s Fun!!
just got this bike 2 days ago and its amazing! Who needs a hardtail when you can get this thing 😄 Thanks for helping me make that purchasing decision :) Very happy i didnt go for the Grizl Trail slx
@@MysticMac000 That is Great! I’m happy for you. It’s such an underrated bike I think.
Thank you for your answers! I bought Szepter couple weeks ago. My bike size is L and I am right in the middle of sizing guidance. The problem I have is too much pressure on my palms. I went to a bike shop to help with proper adjustments, unfortunately, we achieved a very slim improvements. I will go to another bike shop for another attempt with adjustments. I like "long" rides 2-3 hours but after 1 hour ride the pressure becomes really annoying. I was very comfortable on my mountain bike. I wonder if the geometry of Szepter is not for me? Is it possible? I have a standard anatomy. I appreciate if you could share your view on this type of problems. Otherwise it is a great bike that runs almost by itself!
Okay probably due to more aggressive forwards position. You will get used to it, however these two suggestions will make it more comfortable. 1. Double wrap the handlebars with a second roll of bar tape. Try a thicker variety. 2. specialized brand makes a nice gel padding gloves.
@@bgfb Thank you! I will try everything, I like how this bike runs and want to keep it.
How much experience do you have on drop bars bikes? Try gel pads or double wrapping bars. Also consider a flat top carbon bar. Most bikes go cheap on handlebars and saddles and stems since those are so individual and likely to be swapped out.
@@daisydela Thank you, I will consider it after exhausting all adjustment options.
@@daisydela I was riding in the past road bikes as well as mountain bikes. The problem I have here is that I fell like I am sliding forward from bike seat.
Im also in San Diego. You have any route recommendations? Getting into gravel riding soon myself.
In the north county area. The coast to crest trail, lake Hodges, Gonzales Canyon, Del Mar mesa plus a ton of man made trails in and around housing developments. The idea is to link up a few sections as the sections usually start and stop. Also check out group rides on gravelstoke website, cadence cyclery in Encinitas
@@bgfb thanks! Do you feel limited with the 1x setup down here with how hilly SD is? Can’t decide between 1x or 2x.
@@mbrackmann8 I changed the gearing straight away to an XT cassette with a 46. If you not set on 1x , then I think 2x is a wise choice. NEWS FLASH !! YT IS HAVING A SALE ON THE SZEPTER. I bought one and it's my new favorite bike. It has a 12 speed with better spread of gears. Check it out.
@mbrackmann8 I recommend you go demo a Szepter up in San Clemente before you guy anything. I think it's a much better performing bike than the Grizl and my experience with YT in general was much better. If still liking the Canyon, I would pass on the mid level models and either go high end carbon or aluminum. The Grizl 7 is the same weights as my Szepter which has the front suspension fork. The aluminum Grizl rides the same and is much much cheaper. Bottom line though is that the Szepter is a more fun bike that performs better.
Thank you for the great comparison. I'm using a chest mount now but you convinced me the bar mount is much better.
4 minutes of black screen w/ music at the end of the video, niiice…
When was their 25% off sale?
Feb or March. They may have another, so subscribe to their emails.
What size did you get?
Hey @wasago I got an XL. CHECK OUT MY OTHER VID ON SIZING. Canyons make the frames bigger!
Thank you for sharing lots of good information about Grizl and Szepter. Are you still happy with Szepter or you back on Grizl? I am at a dilemma which to buy in the next month, both are good bikes but Szepter looks like a better option if not used for long distance touring, am I correct? It would be kind if you could share advantages/disadvantages of both. There are too many paid reviews. In any case thank you for your videos!
Hey @Dimitri Radiugin Yes I am still happy with the Szepter! Szepter offers more capability (better handling) and fun. I am able to have a great ride on MTB trails that I would not enjoy when on the Grizl. No weight difference. both 23lbs. Road riding feels the same. Gearing on Grizl was not good. 40-44 not good for climbing. Szepter has 12 speed and 38-44 with more range ..much better. I don;t see a problem for long distance riding. all about tire choice I think. Lots of bike bag and hydration options, so mounting holes not critical. I had better experience with YT than with Canyon. Before, during and after sale. Much better tools and instructions with YT. I live near both US HQ and YT and YT has a better "cool factor" friendlier etc... If you watched my other video regarding seat post issue......it took too long for Canyon to address and sort out. Part of it bad design of seat post clamp, other was bad service. Bottom line after owning 3 different gravel/cx bikes is that the Szepter offers so much more fun and versatility, capability. It's a bike that I will keep forever. Let me know about other questions , concerns. Enjoy and let me know your impressions on what you buy,

wha is tire size? 45mm or higher?
Hey @jckus007 It comes with a 45, but can take up to a 50
Can you attach a light underneath it instead of the gorpo?
Hey @FTJ It relies on the GoPro style mount that then screws on to either a garmin or wahoo style mount. So you have those two options to attach or to "Mac Gyver" something......I'm sure there is some sort of a GoPro like adapter on either amazon or ebay that will allow you to do that.
Just got mine last Friday and also have this problem. Will try to contact canyon for that plastic piece and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks for your informative vid!
Hey @BikBurr, Bummer! Ask for James George at Canyon support. He created an internal process for handling this after having to deal with my issue. He was helpful... Ultimately it will be a combination of things. The plastic bit is the weak link in my opinion in design and form. They will just send you the same unit and it is critical to get an exact placement if replacing that piece. More critical is that the post, tube and any possible contacts points be cleaned maticulously with alcohol and then use a ton of paste. Good luck , let me know how it turns out
Just curious what your inseam and height is and what size you bought?
Hey @Dustin Phillips 6'3" with a 34" inseam. I got the XL and just barely cleared the top tube. I made a video on Sizing tips...check it out. others found it helpful.
Lots of good info here thank you! I was wondering if you could elaborate on your thoughts more on the Szepter vs grizl as those are the 2 main bikes ive been looking at. I'm coming from a mtb background and was wondering some pro's/cons of each. Also, I know some people talked about how the szepter has kind of a high BB, did this affect your ride feel at all? I'm not sure if a higher BB is good or bad. Thank you
Hey @Yuyopii , I'll start off by saying that the Szepter has become my all time favorite. It is so versatile and fun because it is so much more capable across more type of terrain. It is very play full and easy to pick up the front end over obstacles for instance.... When I first rode it on my Demo ride, I knew within the first few minutes that I needed to sell my Grizl and buy the Szepter. I've had a couple of other gravel bikes prior and while the Grizl was an improvement probably because of allowance for bigger tires, it still did not get me excited about going on XC type trails. The Szepter takes it to the next level and does really well on rougher light mountain bike trails. Regarding the high BB comments: Having a high BB may cause instability on bikes because the weight is higher. However the Szepter design has a long wheelbase which would counter that effect. Regardless.....It is super stable on rough descents and loves to turn on everything including off camber sections. I think the Szepter is super under rated and make gravel bikes that are based on road geometry seem very limited. Also worth a mention is the buying experience was much better with YT. MUCH BETTER tools and instructions included. I only had to put my pedals on the bike. The core 4 comes with super nice components. Even the saddle is nice. YT offered to let me pick up at US HQ and that saved me $100. Canyon would not do that. I also had an issue with the Canyon seat post that I outline in other videos and while they eventually helped out. It took a loooong time. So as a fellow MTB rider I would say pass on the Grizl and get the Szepter! I look forward to hearing about your new bike!
@@bgfb Thanks for the reply, answered a lot of things I had on my mind, last thing I was wondering about was how it feels on flats and climbing. I do want to use this bike as my "road bike" on some days as well but the 1by got me thinking. Some 1by's have a hard time finding that sweet spot between spinning too fast or having to put in a hard effort. What have you experienced so far if you've used it for roads, I know the szepter is leaning towards MTB's more than roadies so I assume it's a little slower than the grizl if I had to compare 2 bikes. Side note: YT offered me a free shipping code so I'm just deciding on a few last things before I put in my order :)
@@TRISHYXX for me riding position is also more comfortable in the drops on SZEPTER. Tires are different. SZEPTER comes with more narrow but more knobby tires. Bike weight same. Should be very similar speed on road. I don’t find it to be a problem. Climbing off road much better on SZEPTER due to angle of seat tube geometry. That I can notice a lot when climbing tough technical and slippery climbs. SZEPTER has 12 speed sram which is very nice function and gearing spread. Easier to find sweet spot. I had to change Grizl gearing….with larger cassette.
Although noticeably slower than my road bike. It’s just part of the compromise for being off road capable.
