Active transportation is my focus. I'm a long-term bicycle advocate, so when Santa Barbara closed State Street to cars during the pandemic I was there to capture the increase in bike mode share.
Farmers Market Timelapse, Director's Cut
The Farmers Market crowds would be great for a Timelapse shoot, but which camera would be best suited for the environment? I spent too much time weighing my options before I settled on what should've been obvious from the start: a selfie stick with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

Rodger Hembree at 82, still rides his bike 3 times a day, up and down car-free State Street in Santa Barbara.

He's a big contributor to his community. Named one of the “Local Heroes” by the Santa Barbara Independent (November 26, 2024), for his activism as a cyclist and his commitment to Hispanic and indigenous cultures in Santa Barbara. The cover story put the spotlight on a man who has toiled at telling stories for over a decade. "One of the lessons I’ve learned is, hang out with people whose eyes li...
Rodger Hembree rides a bike

Most days he rides 3 times a day - down to the beach and back. It's a routine that combines exercise and socialization opportunities. Everyone knows Rodger, so it seems, as he taught high school here for 30 years - he'll often stop along his route to say hello and talk a little college sports. He could be a poster child for 'all ages and abilities' when it comes to why we advocate for safer bic...
Talkin' Meatball Sandwiches with Tom Moran
Просмотров 39Месяц назад
Tom is a local character, a friend. We meet from time to time on car-free State Street. We've never broken bread together, I don't know his social media preferences, if he even has one. But when I see him he'll often stop to chat, many times we'll chat for a good long time, longer than this meatball sub chatter, but this was the first time I thought to record him. Actually I didn't think I was ...
Urban Vitality, what makes it work?

The Farmers Market has moved to a new location in downtown Santa Barbara - surprisingly, at the intersection of an otherwise busy arterial. Carrillo St links the East Side to the 101 Fwy, so after you restrict the traffic, why does this new location work so well?
My Ode to the Adirondack Chairs on State Street
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Месяц назад
Every day I'm getting my steps, walking State Street while listening to an audiobook - it's suitably quiet. After my routine I'll be plunking myself down in one of the Adirondack chairs that line the street - and watch the magic happen! Friends, colleagues, and acquaintances will often pause as they walk or bike on their way - it's a time filled with micro-socializations which is good for my he...
At the Farmers Market

It's a rainy morning in Santa Barbara, but it's the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so there's shopping to do, rain or shine.

Nice community.
A true honor. Thank you, Frank!
Thank you for introducing us to Rodger. What a great interview. I can't wait to see him out there on State Street.

Love it! Thanks Frank 👊🏼
Yeah, Farmers market!
I want to know where those dudes with the cooler are headed.
I love bicycling but these new "fat tire" electric bicycles are very heavy and very fast. As usual, some cyclists are drawing attention to themselves as they recklessly endanger pedestrians and themselves. Some states and municipalities are already making new regulations on where and when you can use these machines without a license.

Thank you!! I love this part of Santa Barbara.... 🌊

Desperately need housing. Particularly in the urban area! Great example.
❤
Happy New Year, Frank! 😀
Love these!
Right on Frank!
Always good to stop by and chat with you Frank!
Unfortunately, Cliff's example of Caltrans widening 101 will induce more car demand & ownership. While it may be well executed from a bureaucrat's perspective, it is not good for Santa Barbara bicyclists--that jaw-dropping sum of money could be invested in active transportation infrastructure that makes it easier for walkers/bikers to cross over 101 safely, the Amtrak line, or many other public works projects. It's not Cliff's fault the state is doing what the state will do, but this can probably be blocked or funding re-routed at the county level.
We met at Handlebar Coffee which can be noisy, but not in this cleaned up version of the interview...
It’s so easy for the cities to default to cars. You could say they don’t know better, but they do.
Wonderful young man and great interview. Any links to his Instagram page as promised?

I had not thought about how accessible the theater is from the other side.
Their argument: "Cars are needed for drop-offs" becomes a vanity parade
Really quite peaceful minus the honking car. 😂
Nice interview Frank and Mike.

Loving the energy! 😀
Beautifully expressed gratitude!
Love to see all the smiling faces!
Thanks for the great insights
We usually have the county jail inmates aka 'chain gang' doing gardening work and they have the bike lane closed on a very busy highway.
Whinger first class. You can ride in the car lane or get off onto the footpath for a few metres and then return to the bike path. FFS.
Wonderful quality and helpful tips. Thank you
Because they can throw as much money needed to make a company work for the following reasons: they cant admit defeat, they're not that smart and they lie and actually make a decent exit. But when you follow those companies' new owners, without the money and inflated reputation people like berkus has, you will find a sad story.
The final scene with the guy successfully negotiating the blocked bike lane kind of destroys the purpose of your video. I am an avid cyclist and advocate for safe riding but this is a waste of your fine talents. Maybe use your passion to promote protected bike lanes ? Thanks for your efforts.
Get back to work!
IM NOT BEGGING FOR MONEY BUT ***I DO NEED AN ANGEL INVESTOR*** Or a Limited Investment Partner who wants to Profit from your investment. WHERE ARE YOU ????????
needs better cameraman and editing. While I agree with your point, you should try offering solutions, such as your local government exempting that particular sidewalk and placement of bike lane detour signage. Another solution is a BICYCLES MERGING AHEAD sign with yellow flashing lamp. Lastly a Share The Road with Bicycles sign I've seen in tight places before. If you don't have a possible solution, then you'll get disapproval.
fantastic tutorial lad, cheers
Those are just people on bicycles they are by no means cyclists

Hey Frank, I'm about a week away from the completion of a dating app that we Scootie. I was wondering if I could get you email. We've done a small friends and family round of funding and preparing for an institutional round soon. Think of our dating app as the Uber of Dating with 2 revenue models with a "Freemium" download. We're reinventing chivalry for modern times.
Next time I won't cut on the flock of birds!
Frank...thanks so very much for producing these videos. Very useful. Have you had experience at cleaning up more complex noise problems...such as wind and/or automobile noise? If you have I'd love to hear how you are handling it.
+Allan Crawford, I'm mostly recording in the studio
Interesting and original story about challenges in your formative years,
Is this real? Why were you filming there?
So did you spy on these people and then publish their home address like you did the person that bought the firewood? Creepy person...
How about you get off your high horse, or bike, and walk your bike around on the sidewalk. Where should the landscape trucks be in your opinion? On the sidewalk? This guy sounds like he only sees this from one point of veiw.
