I was like you until not long ago, I never voted until 2020, but that was only in federal elections. Part of what George said in the first part, about politicians not just falling outta the sky and that they have to come from somewhere, isn't just commentary on Americans being shitty people, it means that every lying, crooked politician in DC had to start somewhere, well, 99% of them, the orange monkey is an anomaly, but the rest start off as councilpersons, mayors, city planners, district reps, etc.. With the electoral college set up the way it is, our federal votes don't mean squat, the only place "we the people" have a little bit of a say in how things go, the only way to participate in our representative democracy, is to participate in local elections". Then, it's important to keep any eye on who those people we voted for, are they keeping their promises, are they passing meaningful laws that help us citizens, or are they slowly transforming themselves into the type of politician that will fit right in with the money grubbing personal cash grab machine that DC has turned into. More than just voting, it's important to find a way to get involved with community events, build networks, meet people, so that way when some shit hit's the fan, you know what you want as a group, and can organize quickly, and are less likely to need big daddy govt. to come in and save your ass. Thomas Paine once wrote, I think in the Federalist Papers..(paraphrasing)... - For this young country to survive, it's going to take advanced citizenship, all must stay diligent with their civic responsibilities, lest wealthy, powerful men, will slowly erode the freedoms and liberty we have fought for, and simply return us to what we have recently departed from, a monarchy, but under the veil of mock freedom and liberty, ruled by the wealthy rather than the crown. - Remember, voting in federal elections every 2 or 4yrs is literally the very least one can do to stay civically involved, that's why I love mocking people that brag on social media showing off their "I voted" sticker.. 😂😂 While I still stand behind those words, the reason I voted in 2020, and 2024 for president is because our citizens failure to uphold their civic duties (myself included a good chunk of my adult life), have NEVER been more apparent, than by the fact that someone so awful, so fascist, so bigoted, racist and unintelligent, and so unfit for office, could rise to power. The fact that a 34 time convicted felon for fraud, a convicted rapist and someone who literally attempted a coup to overthrow a free and fair election, was even allowed to run again, much less not be behind bars, and now won, is so mind numbingly crazy it's hard to wrap my head around, AND to the rest of the world, despite how bad he effs up things, that fact alone has hurt our countries credibility immensely on the world stage. I guarantee you if Carlin was still alive he would have voted in at least this 2024 election. I still can't be mad at you for not voting, I understand the frustration, trust me, in a normal reality, no way am I voting for Biden or Harris, but the things I disagree with them about and the things Biden did poorly, are NOT why people didn't like him, 3/4ths of the country was propagandized, almost none of the reasons they hated Biden were true. The economy was headed down the shitter with or without the pandemic thanks to trump, it rebounded under Biden WAAAYYY better than predicted, we do not have open borders, Biden, to the left's dismay, kept ALL trumps border policies in place, unemployment has been down the last two years at a 50yr all time low, crime is down across the board, the U.S. Stock Exchange hit an all time record high three times in the last 18months, and despite all the propaganda that Biden shut down pipelines, the U.S. oil drilling/production/export was higher than any other time in our countries history, certainly higher than when trump was in office. And the whole grocery bills being through the roof, that's directly related to supply chain issues from the ripple effects of the pandemic, one leader of one nation has NO CONTROL over that. That's not me cheerleading for Biden/Harris, trust me, I'm just listing the biggest things that swayed normal voters, not maga cult members, they were voting trump no matter what, but sooo many people truly believed all those things I listed were doing horrible, and that's because the right wing in this country has sooooo much more massive amounts of money it's ridiculous, the amount of youtubers, and social media talking heads that were paid by not only our elite, but also by Russian interests is mind boggling, and very easily fact checked. Lastly, I truly love Carlin, and think he's a genius and profound beyond words, but if you've only seen his acts, and never read his books or watched interviews, then you are seeing just that, an act, to make people laugh and to make them think. But he didn't have any visionary abilities or crystal ball, he is a self admitted true leftist at heart, and if you study history and follow global events, history repeats itself, none of what is happening today is new, "cancel culture" and "woke-ism" have been around forever, they're just rebranded and used by different factions every couple of decades, many people that didn't or don't have the luxury of a public platform predicted the same things as Carlin. Carlin, off stage, emphatically talked about the return of fascism to this country, and predicted an eventual leader who was narcissistic, dim witted, nationalistic, carrying a flag and a bible, was a master liar and propagandist and would be wildly popular with the uneducated...his words, sound familiar?? And I do mean "return", do some research into U.S. history between the two world wars and how big fascism got in the U.S., it's downright scary. Anyway, I'll quit rambling, sorry for the long comment, I recently retired from the fire dept with ptsd, and I'm going nuts trying to not be bored and keep my mind occupied, and I don't sleep much, plus doing all those fire reports as a capt. I got to be a weirdly fast typist, so once I get on a rant, next thing I know, I typed a friggin' novel that would give "War n Peace" a run for it's money...lol.
