Echoes of Edinburgh: The Thistle by James Oswald
Our new CD Echoes of Edinburgh explores the music of 18th and 19th century Scotland. One of Scotland's most celebrated and prolific composers was James Oswald (1710-1769). Among his many collections of compositions and arrangements are four volumes of "Airs for the Seasons", collections of short sonatas all named after breeds of flowers. "The Thistle" is the final work in the "Airs for the Summer" and typically for Oswald brings elements of Scottish traditional music into the "art" music sphere. The additional voice for violin is our own arrangement, following Oswald's model for other works in this collection. We have gone a step further in the trad direction with the final allegro...!

Our new CD production "Echoes of Edinburgh" brings together Scottish baroque and traditional music of the 18th and 19th centuries. The fiddler and composer Robert Mackintosh (1745-1807) was a perfect example of the union of "art" and "traditional" styles in Scotland. He was a violinist with the Edinburgh Musical Society orchestra and also a sought after fiddler for the best dance parties of the...

Our new CD Echoes of Edinburgh explores the music of 18th and 19th century Scotland. Here I combine the slow air "My Darling has Deceived Me" from the Patrick Macdonald Collection (1784) with the well-known reel Tullochgorum with variations by James Scott Skinner. This cornerstone of the virtuosic Scottish fiddle repertoire presents its own set of challenges for the flute! Brian Berryman, flute...

In his New Overtures Opus 4 he used well-known song and dance melodies to fashion baroque counterpoint. The first of his collection, "Overture Prima" uses the dance tune Richmond B...

What A wonderful rendition
tune kesukaanku ! matur suksma
2.39 onwards is like walking in the air. You took beautiful music and made it more beautiful.
Super toll!
So amazing! Congrats from 🇬🇷.
What a sweet smiling lass in the back, no doubt pleased with the wonderful playing in front.
Oh to see a harpsichord transcription. Continuo only here? ❤️
Hi, thanks for your interest. Just continuo and a lot of improvisation, sorry, no real written part!
@@brianberryman7264 ♥️👏🤭
Yes indeed this is a most superb rendition
Well that was utterly fantastic
"The Inner Light" in real life
They play it so beautifully... My eyes are full of tears!
It has found it's way to Germany and Austria. What a wonderful air and how beautiful played. Thx 😊
What an incredible rendition of this most beautiful song.........made it even more beautiful......cannot believe this doesn't have more views and likes!!!
Thanks so much, that is very kind of you!
Someone has a crush on the flutist.
A stunning version of this classic Scottish air. Frankly, it moved me to tears.
Ihr könnt halt musizieren
What is this flute? I have pricisely the same flute but I do not know who is the maker
It's a copy of a Quantz flute, made by Martin Wenner
I have exactly the same, style color and key to minute details but no stamp of Wenner. Wonder if mine was a copy made by another guy
@@ggao4097 Martin Wenner stamps all of his flutes. The Quantz flute has an Eflat and a D sharp key and it's quite possible that several makes copy this original
Beautifully played, Brian.
Thanks Lars! Hope you're well!
Beautifully played, well done! I come from Perthshire where Niel Gow is from; I've even been lucky enough to play on one of his fiddles and this is one of the best, most sensitive renditions I've heard of his most famous melody.
Thanks, Colin, for your kind words , coming from a real Scot! Glad you liked it.
I love this whole presentation. The low flute just perfect. The building of the accompaniment. You all play it with the innocence of a brand new tune. Great!!
