longsword winden / winding thrust
In this video, I look at the winden thrust and do my best to explain how to perform it.
Braking down the key movements to allow you to understand it. Like every technique, this requires the correct stimulus to execute properly.
Practice daily to give yourself a better opportunity of landing this technique.

Here we use the technique to help initiate other more complex techniques, such as locking into a bind with a thrust and performing a take down. It is a very useful technique but like most it has its disadvantages. If you cut in with the grip your fingers are vulnerable to being struck so w...

    I’m really impressed by the innovations in HEMA protective gear. As an engineer, I find it interesting how, even though some issues either weren't caught in testing, or product launched with those limitations known to RD, the design allows for easy fixes. In this niche market, there's a lot of room to innovate, and that is cool in an of itself. I see these design iterations and adaptations as, in large part, community-driven.

    I can see this more useful of a technique for stability in thrusting at a high angle, or for more control in a specific form of parry/entrapment as a setup to a counter.

So thought I'd film some techniques and movements in slow motion to help anyone who was interested. If you have any requests feel free to ask, and if it's in my skill set I'll put a short together. Great work! I think the sequence looks really fluid. Solid execution all around. One point to consider is the start. It says that you start in the vor, so you are initiating the exchange. Threatening with the thrust can force them from a position like tag or zornhut. If they go aggressive by cutting into your thrust. Most of those cuts can be countered by the following zwirchhau. Doing a thrust against someone cutting in with a powerful cut from zornhut might work, but feels a bit dangerous.

    • @Reddragonlongswordacademy
      @Reddragonlongswordacademy Месяц назад

      @@TheMarkehed yep totally see you point I think my interpretation is the thrust is there to make them think they have a advantage only to be met with a short or back edge zwirchhau to their left. So it might look like one is trying to land a thrust but it's just there to open up or force the opponents move. this instance is a powerful zornhut. This is just my thoughts on it, and we tend to change and adapt the plays in class to find what works best in modern sparring. I actually used this at the end of the session when we spared but instead of trying to land the cut after the thrust I Feigned it and landed the second instead just to confuse them. Hope this was a better insight to my thought process.

  • @TheMarkehed
    @TheMarkehed Месяц назад

    Again, well-done techniques; I just have some nitpicks. I have some doubts about the middlehau. It says to cut directly from above against their head so I think that should be more of an oberhau. The last cut should probably be a zwirchhau so thumb underneath there with the same angle. I would like the cut to end with the hands higher though as it protects your head against counters. Small adjustments really and some might just be preferences.

    • @Reddragonlongswordacademy
      @Reddragonlongswordacademy Месяц назад

      Hey thanks so are you referring to the cut after the short edge one ? If so the middlehau falls naturally to their block setting you up for it,then following that with an underhau if it lands or not. We had a load of fun deciphering it and like you found the zwirchhau felt natural setting up a good defence.

    • @TheMarkehed
      @TheMarkehed Месяц назад

      @@Reddragonlongswordacademy Yes I can see how that feels more natural. If you stop the short edge cut like you do at the point when the schielhau "should have hit" a middlehau makes more sense. If you however continue with the cut, keeping your hands high, letting the point go in an arc down in a circle along your left side, your momentum makes an oberhau more ideal I think.

    I think the technique looks good but I would like to dispute that the first cut is a schielhau.. and some other stuff. I think it's a prellhau with the outside edge as described in the last part of the double prellhau description. You are not really supposed to get a bounce hit with a schielhau. It should be cut with the short edge. I would argue that both the third and fourth cuts could be schielhaus, though. You do more of a zwirchhau for the fourth, but it's stated that the cut should be done with the short edge and that's not really the case with a zwirchhau from the left. I think there should be a separate fifth zwirchhau cut while you withdraw instead. With that said I think all the techniques looks nice and that it's a viable sequence even though I think it's different from what's described.

    • @TheMarkehed
      @TheMarkehed Месяц назад

      Another thing. In the first cut, you strike against their inward flat with your outward flat. No biggie, just terminology. I also see that you talked about the prellhau here in the comment of the video on the second device. I heard now that you mention the zwirchhau on the withdrawal so that's my bad for not listening well enough.
