Rob Draper,ACS - Cinematography.

Добавлен 14 дек 2013
Hi, I'm Rob Draper,ACS. An Aussie DP. I have been a Cinematographer for a long time, all over the world, for the major studios and networks on every type of project imaginable. I started in TV News, moved to Documentaries, commercials and finally into narrative work on TV and Feature Films.
I started this channel to pass on elements I know are important for your work to improve so you can rise through the ranks in what has become a very crowded industry.
I focus on the artistic creative elements of the craft, not the technical. Tech can be easily learned but it is being able to add individual creativity and style that requires development, making your work stand out from everyone else.
I aim to pass on what I have learned in over 40 years to help you do just that.
I have taught workshops worldwide to collectively more than 3000 DP's. There will be none of the hype just sound advice based on years of experience. Follow along, post comments, ask questions, I am here to help.

Chapter 1 Part 6 - The Camera Doesn't Matter - How to improve your Cinematography Forget the Camera

I see Cinematographers desperately worried about what camera they are using. The camera simply doesn't matter if you understand every camera's parameters. Building a visual style for a movie as a Cinematographer, Director of Photography or filmmaker, depends on your knowledge of the system you use....NOT on the system.

You guys are not The Three Stooges quit trying to be like them cuz you'never be like them
True but they did a superb job. So much so that their families, who were consultants on the film, praised everyone involved for the likeness.
I still don't believe I've ever seen a more gorgeous nocturnal forest. There is a moment, right after Michael has killed Tina, that he is shown from a lower angle, framed against the canopy of overhanging trees. The sight of the leaves fluttering overhead almost mimics a sky of twinkling stars....I've never seen anything quite like that shot. The effect is mesmerizing, and surreal. In fact, at the beginning of the film, as Michael staggers up out of the stream, the leaves are used to vivid effect, as well, as they gently move in the breeze overhead. Moments like this can seem trivial to some people, but I find that they make all the difference. As many times as I've seen the film, I still continue to find new things to appreciate.
@tgriffin3059 many thanks for your kind words. Always appreciate hearing from folks who notice all the nuances. Even after all these years still quite proud of the work on H5. Your comments are appreciated. Thank You.
I love your content! Please make more videos!
the WORST uncle of the year goes to Michael Myers
How can we know about the exposure values
I have always been impressed by her acting as a kid
0:39 oh no!
That shot of the exterior of the house, from Michael's vantage point as he approaches, is as gorgeous of a shot as I've seen anywhere in the horror realm. Some complain about the house being different in this one. But I wouldn't trade it for anything. This final sequence, at the Myers' house, is as good as anything in the series. It wouldn't be possible without this house.
Hey thanks for your kind words. The house was totally different but really worked for the film. We needed all the elements it provided to be able to fully tell the story including basement 1st and 2nd floors and attic.
Let's See How Wubzzy Reacts to This Scene 😓

Thanks for the comment Mauricio and all the best on your film.
This guy was getting paid to say the POV and he cashed in big time
Haha...if I did get paid I would have been paying myself
When it comes to atmosphere and suspense 4-6 are hard to beat. The rooftop chase, the laundry chute scene and the tunnel chase are all three of the scariest suspense moments to be found anywhere in the franchise. They were worth the price of admission. We haven’t seen suspense along those lines since the gate scene in H20. These scenes are the essence of what every Halloween film should aspire to. 🎃🔪
Thanks for sharing. Subscribed. Best wishes with your channel.
Many thanks really appreciate your thoughts.

Well of knowledge is right here
I can appreciate the technical challenges posed by such a scenario, and how satisfying it would be for it to turn out so well. But for sheer artistry...I don't think anything rivals the barn sequence. For those who, like myself, love the basic slasher motif...of having a killer lurking on the periphery, while his targets go about their business oblivious to his presence....that barn scene is the most masterfully executed thing ever. It is basically a slasher short film, unto itself. First off, it is GORGEOUS...the use of light, and color...unparalleled...then toss in the added splashes of color from the girls' costumes...(in addition, both girls are featured in closeups that are presented about as beautifully as I've ever seen women shot, frankly...Tina, with her luminous skin and tangled, dark hair, as well as Sami, with her wickedly erotic facial features...neither of those women ever looked as good as they look RIGHT HERE). Also, the sequence is divided into smaller chapters...the entrance...the isolation of Tina...the exit of Tina...the isolation of Sami...the sex scene...the slaughter...and then the return of Tina. ALL of it is so beautiful. And the culmination, where Myers is wielding the enormous scythe...that shot of him, when he is about to kill Sami, is about as iconic of a shot as anybody has ever captured of the Bogeyman. If you haven't seen Michael Myers in that shot, for my money, you haven't seen him....For all my gushing over the barn, I'd say much the same about the subsequent parts in the forest...I've never seen a nocturnal forest presented in such a manner...It is incredible...and the shot of Myers, after he's killed Tina, and he's standing beneath that canopy of gently rustling fall leaves...Again, it's an iconic shot, and about as compelling as the character has ever looked. Many elements came together to make this film the masterpiece it was....but there is no more essential cornerstone of that greatness than the cinematography.
I have to reply immediately. Sincere thanks for such a thoroughly thoughtful comment. You picked elements Dominique and I specifically discussed with that scene. We wanted the girls to look stunning in the midst of such darkness and the colors were very intentional. Really appreciate it when the effort we put in is noticed in such fine detail. I will pass this on to Dominique too. A long time since we shot this obviously but still a favorite of mine. Many thanks.
@@robdraperacs-S35 Thank you for taking the time to respond. As you may have surmised, this is a very special film for me.

Super bad casting for this movie !
I feel bad for her
Not cool Michael Myers
I still remember watching this movie on Halloween night before I went trick or treating, I was very young and I'll never forget this scene!
Total horseshit. He had a stroke in a chair.
Curly was a moron, tried and true. He whooped until his life was through.
After college I ended up in TV news as a reporter and in small markets I shot and edited video as well as writing and being on-camera. I also got to do one documentary. Ultimately I got into corporate video and we did some pretty high end productions. I needed to know more about that tough so, I took a class at the then, Maine Photographic and Film Workshop and my teacher was Rob Draper. I think the class was about how to make video production look more like film. I learned so much from Rob and he inspired me to keep pushing to be the best I could be. I still did a variety of jobs after that...writer, producer, DP, editor, but for the last ten years I have been DP at an advertising/marketing agency in Texas and I have learned tons on-the-job, especially about lighting. You never stop learning, although I might learn less starting in 2024 when I retire. Rob, good to see you and it's great that you are still sharing your knowledge with us all!
David I just saw this comment. Sincere thanks for your kind words and great to hear of your progression. Me, still going, way too much exciting stuff happening in the biz right now. Still flying the flag 😀
It's funny that they can recreate every Three Stooges scenes right but still get most of their facts wrong. Nice try, Hollywood.
That’s not how it happened here, curly suffered a debilitating stroke while sitting in Jules White’s chair
The way I understood it, they were setting up for the big pie fight to end the short, everyone was called to the set, Curly didn't answer, Moe went looking for him and found him sitting in Jules White's chair with his head slumped over and he was in tears. Moe quietly informed Jules, Curly was taken to the hospital and they re-worked the last scene on the fly.
Yeah, between takes prior to a scene that required him. And the stroke wasn't exactly dramatic where he convulsed on the spot, flailing about. It was more a silent, yet strong, one that strikes so sudden. Causing him to hunch over with his head to his chest, whimpering and crying from the pain.
That's how Moe himself described it in his autobiography (finished after his death by his daughter Joan). It's so heartbreaking to read about that moment.
It looked like he suffered a seizure.
Prⓞм𝕠𝕤𝐌 🍀
thats not the myers house
Your a amazing cinematographer!
The chance of me going into that house is slim bordering on none 🤣
loomis should have had a uzi and at least 2 hand guns on him with a lot of ammo and just go to work
might have made it a much shorter series of films :-)
good to see loomis upgraded his handgun from a revolver to a smith and weson
#5 will always hold a special place in my heart..
There's a small handful of movies that are almost like an extension of my own reality. Halloween 5 is one of those films. I've loved it from the first time I saw it, and continue to appreciate it more over time.
It is of course a retelling, but Curly did suffer a stroke while filming Half-Wits Holiday
Correct and many consider it to have been caused, to a large degree, by the constant hits to the head during the filming.
@@robdraperacs-S35 This movie did take a little dramatic license in this scene but it's otherwise accurate. Not sure about it being from repeated head shots, however. Moe wrote in his autobiography "Moe Howard and the Three Stooges" that when Curly was called to do the scene, he was found sitting with his head drooped and unable to speak. This was this big one that effectively ended his career. Curly's health had been in decline prior to the Half Wits Holiday shoot. It had been evident in earlier shorts through his increasingly slowed speech and physicality. He probably had suffered several smaller strokes over the years leading up to this. He had severe high blood pressure. Very sad. I remember noticing the change as a kid when I watched these having no idea why he was different. Michael Chiklis playing Curly here...he was in the Seinfeld episode The Stranded. Thanks for posting this. Cheers.
It looked like he suffered a seizure.
@@robdraperacs-S35 But this was not accurately how Curly suffered his career-ending stroke during production of “Half-Wits Holiday”. He suffered from it after walking off the stage from a shot that takes place where Moe caught Curly trying to eat a pie and was ordering to sit by a chair in this shot in which he does. Then, as Curly was called to be in the pie-fight sequence for the end of the short, he didn’t respond, and Moe later found him in Jules White’s Director’s chair, with his head slumped on his shoulder and he teared up, which was where he suffered that very debilitated stroke, and thus not featuring him in the pie-fight sequence.
Yeah but it's wasn't on the set it's was before the pie fight
Dr. Loomis been trying to take down michael myers since halloween 1&2 and he never dies so we can see why loomis is so crazy in this film.
Dr Loomis is the reason the old series was awesome and he is just as compelling as Myers R.I.P. Donald pleasence god rest his soul u are very much missed old doc the race is over u won
@@ajlakes6336 Yeah i can agree with you on that as much as i enjoyed halloween 2018 but haven't seen halloween kills yet they sure cannot compare to the original movies. I think it was a mistake ignoring the events of halloween 2 1981 with the 2018 one. Donald pleasance probably would've been good again in halloween h20 if he didn't pass away before that movie came out. It's crazy to think that halloween the curse of michael myers was the last film he ever did you could really tell by that time he was really getting on up in age but still wanted to play the character of dr. loomis now that's what you call dedication right there.
Kills is a good film but don't take the haters opinions into account or my opinion but I liked it and I am an old school fan like u my friend heads up though Myers is brutal and there is a Loomis cameo not better than the original series but still one of the best sequels of the past 20 years besides the 2018 one
@@ajlakes6336 Since you told me about kills i gotta watch it whenever i get the chance.
Dr Loomis was persistent that’s for sure 😉 Donald Pleasance was also a very good actor and really knew his character in the Halloween films. On top of that he was a true gentleman, down to earth, friendly and just a downright nice bloke….which also contributed to him lasting so long.
Been enjoying this series and this one was the best so far! The biggest challenge is to convince production of the importance of adequate prep, especially these days with many young and inexperienced “producers”.
Yes agreed. Very difficult to make inexperienced folk understand that spending a little more on the front end can save a lot on the backend.
@@robdraperacs-S35 forgive me if you’ve already heard the expression……” tripping over dollars to pick up nickels “. My cynicism is starting to scare me.
Wow, I didn't know Rob Draper himself had a RUclips channel. I just want to say even though people rag on this movie alot, I think it has some of the best atmosphere and cinematography in the entire Halloween franchise. In some parts it even reminds me of Dean Cundey's cinematography.
Hey thanks for the kind words, appreciated. Yeah after all these years I am still quite proud of what I achieved on H5....it was quite a tricky shoot, involved a lot of risk taking and surprisingly still holds up well after all these years. Cheers. Rob
