Here at 4High Garage I'm looking to share stories of my wrenching ups and downs. Jeeps are notorious for both. Some of it will be simi-DIY or how-to videos and some will be travel videos. Maybe more? I don't know, lets just take is slow and see how this relationship goes.
The DIY and how to videos watch at your own risk. I can't be held liable if you follow my dumb a$$. I'd recomend you watch many many videos from multiple content producers if you're atempting something you don't already know how to do.
Hopefully I can either help you or make you laugh, probably at my expense.
Enjoy.

This is our (try to be) annual Guy's trip. We stayed in Ouray, CO and left from there to run Engineer Pass, Animas Fork ghost town, Imogene pass, and Ophir Pass. Didn't get very far before one of us got a little too close to the edge of the trail and nearly slid off. Other than some stained britches we all made it just fine. This is an E-Bay kit that you can just search for. I'm not leaving a link because they come and go. It's a good option for a bolt in application. However if you can I'd modify it like I did in this video. In the end I believe the weld in kits would be superior to this but it's getting the job done. Been chasing a similar sound in my gladiator (very modified) for 6 months. I hate these types of hunts. I have even put a chassis ear on multiple components. Just can't track it down. Good luck man, hopefully 2 years later you found it. I guess my phone was listening to me cuss the last few months, I haven't searched for how to find a suspension popping sound lol.
@@Tinker3504 I never nailed down the exact spot but I believe it was suspension related. Supporting the Jeep I took the spring, shocks, and all four control arms out to inspect and cleaned. Nothing looked out of place. I was sure to clean the spring pockets too. I reinstalled loose let it sit down under its own weight and tightened up all the bolts. Snug tights with some blue lock tight. And it went away. So something was binding and making that pop. But I’ll never know exactly what it was.
Another great vid. By the way, love the headliner in the XJ.

Are those the new BFG KO3 on that blue Jeep? Do you think they performed 1 louder than the KO2s?
They are a great tire but only look good on blue jeeps. LOL
Sorry to see that ! I had a 1996 2 door SE that met the same fate , 92 year old woman creamed me while sitting at a light and not only hit the back put peeled the passenger side past the rear tire ! Have to give the jeep props though it got me home over 30 miles . Good luck with your "new" one !
@@frankporfidio9813 Thanks !!
Should took one off ur wreck jeep from the rear doors
That absolutely crossed my mind. And I may add them to my parts bin in the end. Or they may say there and I build half doors out of those. In this case the Amazon ones were less than $20 and that was worth my time.
So much work. Good stuff!
I wonder if there was more of an aggressive bend in the drag link would it clear the sway bar
Loved the video I'm doing the parts search now to this up grade and also letting us know where to get those hard to find spacers .. What was the brand of those chips 🍟 you were eating that was 😁 😂. Keep those videos coming XJ Fam.

What steering stabilizer clamp do you have in the thumbnail photo? You don't address it in the video.
Found it on amazon. I installed it and t immediatly rusted so I'm not recomending it. Its on my list to replace but since it's still holding I haven't been in a rush to do so.
Take the handle off of your floor jack, pull it apart in the middle. Use the handle by sticking in through your axel tube and inserting the handle of a seal driver into it, fits perfectly. Tap from the outside and bodabing Bobs your uncle.
@@bradleycrenshaw6778 Ha! Hadn’t thought of the floor Jack handle. Thanks for the suggestion!
Great video bud. What year is yours because when I clicked the link for the the RMS. Shows it doesn’t fit mine. Did they change the RMS for a 00/01?
Yes the seal is different. Mine is a 1997. The install will be about the same though.
What the hell,no snack??😁😁
Hahahahaha. Damn it I forgot. I'll get it in the next one!!
Good job! You motivated me to get mine done!
@@kjohns236 Fantastic!
Did you ever figure out that “pop” “clunk” problem you had while turning? My 05 LJ has the EXACT sound and I can’t figure out what it is
@@craiggeauxtreaux5862 I wish I had. I hate unanswered questions like that but unfortunately someone rear ended the Jeep and it’s been totaled. I had planned to jack up the front and completely disable the front suspension. Make sure there wasn’t something obvious and reinstall. Maybe not crank down so tight on the bolts. Don’t forget to install with nuts and bolts in but loose and don’t tighten until it’s on the ground under its own weight. I’m also in the process now of swapping everything I can from this Jeep to its replacement. I will certainly share if the pop sound followed me.
I did this in a friends jeep and had a hard time finding the part.
@@cameronwebb3959 I put the part number in the description to help people locate it.
Where did u find it I looked it up online called my auto stores around no one has it
@@Judy2Ju I found it on Amazon. Dorman part # 800-714
Wouldnt it be easier to just swap the axle then to do all this ? Or are the axle mounts not in a good place ?
@@michaelengelhardt5296 If I remember correctly they’re in the same place. All the Cherokees from 2000 forward including the grand Cherokee (WJ) were all a low pinon Dana 30. Keeping the high pinon Dana 30 in my 1999 XJ is preferable. Keeps the pinion and front driveshaft out of the rocks.
@4HIGHGARAGE ik they are both high pinion d30 but the wj is 65 in mounting surface instead of 60 inch. But idk about control arm mounts, tracj bar mount or spring perches.
@@michaelengelhardt5296 Ah I didn’t remember that. Guess is the control arms line up it be a decent swap. I’m running spacers for the JL rims I’m running even though it’s the same lug pattern the wheel offset requires the spacer. So a wider axle would do the same thing.
Great walkthrough. I will be doing my rms soon and this will helpful.
Thanks!
Where did you get that steering wheel?

Nice old Globemaster adjustable wrench! Looks like a old Japan made one!
Yes. Good eye! Found at a garage sale. 🤘
lol. That noise you made when you saw the old lube. 😂😂 been there.
Do you think this job could be done with just hand tools?
Absolutely! You’ll just need to source a torque wrench. But the rest can totally be done with hand tools.
Hi, Great video. I have the same axle/brakes but no spreader bar/spring or the parking brake lever that the cable connects. Any idea where i can find those items?
Possibly eBay or a junk yard. Unfortunately they don’t sell them through parts stores. Might find a forum or Facebook group and reach out to others and see if someone wouldn’t mind selling them to you.
Which ball joint press is that?
I borrowed the kit from a friend. I wana say the brand was Astro Pneumatic Tools. But any of the heavy duty kits should work and you can usually rent them from any parts store.
Why didnt you replace the oil pump or even put in a stroker crank while you were in there?😁😁
I’m super leery of the Chinese oil pump garbage out there. So if it ain’t broke don’t fix it kinda thing. And man oh man would I love to put a stroker motor in this Cherokee!!
Then forged iron pistons, bore out the cylinders, new timing chain and camshaft, roller rockers...
How is it holding up? Just purchased a ‘97 for my son that likely needs this.
Good video, I did the RMS in my Comanche when I had the trans out and it was much easier, but still a tough time. I ended up having to take the next 2-3 bearing caps ahead loose to get enough space to get my new block side seal in without damage. Very carefully re-torqued everything and have been leak free the last 2 years! I don't drive it much, but it was much needed. While you're down there, might as well do the oil filter adapter gaskets as well, since that's another leak-prone area of these motors.
I forgot in some cases you have to loosen up a couple more bearing caps. Damn wish I had mentioned it. Thanks for posting it here though!
Doesn't look like it'll run? Doesn't look like you could stop it. I bet if ya'll keep using it and make sure the pumps have oil, it'll probably run forever.
That’s the goal!!
What about the race for the outer wheel bearing? I mean. Do I use the race for the outer bearing on the spindle? I'm replacing everything. Upgrading parts.
Yes the race for the outer bearing goes in that hub with the brake rotor. In this video I hear the whole thing up with my home stove and out the races in the freezer. They drop right in.
@@4HIGHGARAGEsavvy! Thank you. It just seemed odd to me. As my old bearings didnt have a race. I bought yukons akfg02 bearings

Last I guarantee you that company is out of business because they made quality stuff
LoL. Sad but probably true.
I enjoyed your music and video, I’m working on my 1996 XJ now and the headliner is on the list to replace, thanks for your tips.
Glad it’ll help!
I'm about to take on this job on my 98' XJ - also red ;) I noticed you installed soundproofing - the dynamat. I was going to use foam backed headliner fabric for my refit. But also thought about adding soundproofing. Do you think the dynamat would fit with the foam backed stuff over top? Or were you using the dyanmat as a replacement for the headliner foam?
Also - great job! Looks amazing.
@@macindoe Thanks!
I’m not sure if I fully understand your question. But I think you’re asking if along with the dynamat on the ceiling would some foam insulation between the dynamat and the headliner board fit too. And I think thin foam would fit too. The headliner board sits against the brace so you have the thickness of the brace to work with. Because of this You would not be able to put foam over the brace. You’d have to work around that. Hope that answers your question.
it made me cringe when I saw that ring carrier fall to the ground
I may or may not have peed a little. LOL
Do they fit with 15" steelies?
I didn't try but word is they will work with the right back spacing and maybe a little clearing of the calipers.
what is the measurement for the drag link
Not sure at the moment. But this is the kit I purchased. cavfab.com/products/wj-knuckle-swap-steering-system-xj-tj-zj-mj-lj?adgroupid=&campaignid=20882800216&device=m&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwkuqvBhAQEiwA65XxQBG1Edb7JfWmnYOmR0b-dfdC6-aGPGxb257xQRbphEveg-WmZDQnCRoC3U0QAvD_BwE&https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cavfab.com&keyword=&variant=40865848197269
I am glad you posted this. I am going to be redoing a cluster or two myself. Someone mentioned a sticker cricut. How would that work?? Also did you happen across any other solutions for those letter coming off after the fact??
