I’m probably going to sound ignorant here, but I didn’t really go for the winning entry, it’s nice enough but just a bit dull as dishwater. I’d have been happier if Sweden, Belgium, Finland or even Switzerland had won. I didn’t rate the UK entry, I remember being narked that it got so much radio play at the time. Having said that It was a bummer of YT to mute Gina G and the other entrants. That scoreboard was a bit rubbish, in two segments, with the camera zooming in and out like Billy-oh. It was all a technical marvel I know, but in previous years, with the camera focused on a simple scoreboard, it made it much easier to follow the voting as scores were being given out. Terry was in excellent form, as usual. This all might make me sound quite the miseryguts, but I have spent the last month or so, binge-watching contests from 1978, when I first remember watching aged 9. There have been some really great contests, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1993 and 1995 all being better contests for the standard of music. Nothing stood out this year other than a copycat of the previous year’s winner.

A step backwards from 1995, but with a logical winner. To me the only deserved Irish winner in the 90's, and possibly the last time that my favorite of the evening also won. That Austrian song deserved way more votes than it got, it was a welcome shot of energy in this lot. I think I actually might have been sad about this in 1996 as a 15 year old. I did however forget that Ooh Aah actually participated in Eurovision, that was an unpleasant surprise. It's pretty clear that the UK tried to change the style of Eurovision in 1995 and 1996, I got to give them that. But they manage to send so many subpar vocalists in so many occasions, a trend that's still here in 2023, so strange to me. A trend at this point in Eurovision is Finland getting almost no points, no matter what they send. Their song in 1996 totally didn't deserve last place, this is almost looking fishy to me. All the performers that couldn't hit a note ended way higher, I'm not even Finnish and I can feel this frustration. Anyways, this is my top 10 of 1996 : 12 Ireland 10 Austria 8 Finland 7 Greece 6 Sweden 5 Turkey 4 Norway 3 Estonia 2 France 1 Belgium The last place was for Spain this time, no idea what that song was ment to be, maybe the worst Spanish entry ever. Also Poland did send a terrible voice again two years in a row, what a contrast with their 1994 debut entry.
