I got one of these from a friend that may have been repaired by you once (uses very similar capacitors, also I saw a date of 3/8/11) and I am working on replacing the electrolytic caps with tantalums from a kit I bought off of eBay.

Just found one of these at the bottom of a giant bin at a thrift outlet store for $2. It was in a plastic baggie with its felt dust cover and AC adapter. The clock had 25 year old batteries in the compartment which had miraculously not leaked. At first it didn't power on, but after a bit of testing it turned out that the power switch had just gotten scratchy and needed a bit of contact cleaner. After that minor servicing (plus cleaning all of the switches, sliders and dials for good measure) it's been working as if it were brand now, and not something I just saved from the brink of the landfill. Fantastic little radio. I got it a nice little reel antenna, and it's been able to pull stations from all over the world.

I have 4 of these, and have a 5th coming that does not power on, and thinking it may be the cable. I have never done this, just watched videos such as this one, and having a few cable repairs kits that have the capacitor and brighter LEDs, so I hope it does not end up like my attempts at fixing laptops.

Can those faulty 24 capacitor make the Jog dial not to work sir ??? Anyone from this group please reply to me... ??? My Arrow scan keys are not working... An the sound is very low like 5% only on full volume... So what has made my those Jog dial not to work... ??? Please reply ...

This radio only goes up in 5 kHz steps. Don't you loose most of the stations especially on SW and SSB channels.

Sony ICF SW55 - SSB - не плачет, проблема решена. УРА! Как и обещал даю описание. Много лет существует проблема в SonyICF-SW55, описанная в разных статьях и комментариях, ЭТО нестабильность работы именно в SSB, это явление выражается в некотором -«подплакивании» голоса, и при этом, это у многих партиях этих приёмников, только выражается у всех по разному, у кого более заметно, у кого менее, но проблема есть. Много делалось попыток, на разных сайтах, радиолюбителями, выявить причину и устранить - безрезультатно. И вот наконец проблема с SSB - решена. Я провел много экспериментов по устранения «плача» в SSB и все таки нашёл причину и метод её устранения, теперь приёмник Sony ICF SW55 достойно будет работать без «подплакиваниея», по приёму однополосной модуляции. Оказалось - это связано - только со шлейфом, и устраняется очень легко, не меняя ни каких деталей, и нужно только снять заднюю крышку приёмника и сделать несколько манипуляций. И приёмник заработает как положено. Опишу как это можно сделать, практически, всего за 10 минут. Это доступно любому простому пользователю, только нужен паяльничек и кусочек изолированного проводка. Доработка SSB - радиоприёмника Sony ICF SW55, трели - искажение модуляции - решено. Не пугайтесь, что так много расписано, это для любого пользователя, что бы мог повторить. Суть - всего то, сделать правильно перемычку - одним проводком. Как это сделать, пошаговая инструкция. 1. Открываем заднюю крышку радиоприёмника, 5 шурупов, перед нами плата с SMD монтажом. 2. Поворачиваем приёмник батарейным отсеком к себе. 3. Слева от динамика - припаян шлейф, это тот участок, где нужно сделать эту доработку. 4. Отворачиваем аккуратно (этот участок ) шлейфа на себя так, что бы было видно дорожки под шлейфом. Так же видим экранированную пластину закрывающую место платы. 5. Находим ( 6 ) ножку - (вывод) шлейфа и коротенькую дорожку от него к (заклёпке - пистону) сразу под шлейфом. 6. Перерезаем соединение аккуратно, эту дорожку, от шлейфа - его ( 6 вывода) к заклёпке, прямо у пистона - заклепки, и проверяем обязательный разрыв. 7. За пластиной экранной - ищем надпись на плате приёмника "FM LOCAL" и ( 3 -три) заклёпки - пистоны, расположенные рядом в одну линию. 8. Считаем с лева на право, и находим (3 - третью) заклёпку - пистон, надпись ("LOCAL") и буквы ( "AL") под этой заклёпкой. 9. Перерезаем аккуратно печатную дорожку к это заклёпке, что определили - около ( AL), и проверяем обязательный разрыв соединения. 10. Находим - тонкий многожильный изолированный проводок произвольной длины с запасом, находим - отсчитываем - ( 6 вывод шлейфа)там, где от него отрезана дорожка к пистону, и припаиваем красиво, иименно к самому выводу шлейфа, этот проводник одним концом. \ 11. Второй конец проводка, припаянного к выводу( 6) шлейфа, примеряем по длине к точке, куда нужно его припаять, а именно к пятачку, с надписью (" S. LEVEL") и обязательно проводим поверх экранированной пластины коротким путем, что бы не мешало шлейфу. 12. Улаживаем шлейф на своё место, как и ранее. 13. Проверяем правильность и последовательность действий, отсутствие замыканий и некачественной пайки. 14. Закрываем крышку радиоприёмника и радуемся правильной модуляции в режиме SSB приёмника Sony ICF SW55. Проблема устранена навсегда - именно в этой модели. Это НЕ ЕСТЬ - схемный недостаток, а всего лишь ошибка в расположении выводов на шлейф с платы. Вот потому и очень трудно было определить эту причину, и много было сделано экспериментов - но без результата. Я случайно сделал такой вариант со шлейфом в приёмнике, просто больше ничего не оставалось и это оказалось правильное решение. Делайте, повторяйте по желанию, всем удачи. Just had my SW 55 repaired. Catastrophic League from caps which corroded the board and Viers along with chips. It appeared on radio cruncher YT Channel and is still undergoing repair.

I got one of these SONY short waves radio and I paid £10.00 for it from a charity shop in London few years ago

My SW55 is doing good on MW and FM, however short wave has very poor reception say only one station on 21m band that too noisy and very very low audio. Could you please help me and let me know what possible fault it is having?

Hi there, I have this sony icf-sw55 Radio which I haven't been using for years, yesterday when I try to use it again it says Cal only and there is nothing going on.. I checked on net and seem like it is common problem with this type of Radio and something must be wrong with capacitors.. Question is what type and walt capacitors I should buy to replace them? I know it will be not easy but I will try to change it :) as seem like there are no place to fix it in my country sadly.. All the best..

Hi , I have one of these and the FM starting to not finding any station and when find one the quality is very poor . The AM band is working perfectly and there is not any issue with that but the Fm is suffering . Do you know what is the problem is ? Thanks
