Climbing PICO DE ORIZABA, a 5636 m high volcano!
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
I set out to climb Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl or Iztactépetl. It is a stratovolcano that rises to 5636 m / 18,491 feet above sea level. It is the highest mountain in Mexico and third highest in North America. The volcano sits on the border between the states of Puebla and Veracruz. Although dormant the volcano is not extinct and last erupted in 1846.

    I finally realized... People who climb dangerous mountains achieve nothing of any use to anybody and selfishly put the lives of anybody who does or would care for them beneath their own ridiculous sense of glory. It's embarrassing and pathetic, not something to be proud of.

    I tried to climb Chimborazo in 2017 with my Ecuadorian friend. We just drove to the first camp by car and then I instantly walked to second camp and back... Which was silly. Over the night I had intense headache and had to cancel my climb up. Cocao tea helped. Next time I would do it property with spending time at higher altitudes first.

    • @rasmuspreston
      @rasmuspreston 10 дней назад

      Sounds rough man! It is not an easy mountain for sure. When I go back I will climb some of the other lower volcanoes first to acclimatize. Also just to get more out of my trip to Ecuador. It was almost silly to travel all the way there from Denmark just to spend a few miserable days with headache on Chimborazo haha. But I did go to Mexico and flew up Pico de Orizaba directly after. All in all a good trip, and Ecuador is such a beautiful place.

    Are you supposed to wear a down jacket on the outside of your shell? I feel like that looses insulative properties?

    • @rasmuspreston
      @rasmuspreston 19 дней назад

      Great question! Yes, it is done this way and is actually really warm. You can of course wear a thinner down jacket as a midlayer. But the big puffys can't physically fit underneath a hardshell. The big puffy is often used during breaks and on the summit as a reinforcement layer. It is often too warm to wear when you are moving. On higher summits like the 8000 meter ones you will see people wearing full body down suits :)

    • @RubenPena-v1e
      @RubenPena-v1e 19 дней назад

      @ so was this a mistake you made when purchasing your layers. Should I make sure my down jacket can fit before the shell

    • @rasmuspreston
      @rasmuspreston 19 дней назад

      I am not sure I understand your question :) No mistakes were made here. Climbers often use two different down jackets. A thinner one as a midlayer under the hardshell and a big puffy to go on top of everything as a reinforcement layer when standing still. It is two different pieces of clothing. Wearing a down jacket as a midlayer can be very warm though and is only used for cold conditions. I often just wear a fleece or a synthetic (primaloft) midlayer or even just a softshell jacket if it is really warm.

    Wish it wasn’t so expensive to buy all this stuff. Would love to get into mountaineering.

    • @rasmuspreston
      @rasmuspreston 24 дня назад

      It sure is expensive! But there are a lot of cheaper alternatives out there. If you are based in the US, a hard shell from REI could be a good option instead of a crazy expensive one from Arc'Teryx. Most of the gear like crampons, ice axe, harness, boots, etc. can be rented wherever there is a mountain to be climbed, whether it be Mt Rainier in the US, the Alps, Nepal, etc. I have built my gear collection over many years, which helps ease the strain on my finances 😅

    I'm not a pro, just an enhusiast but I like my clothes for hiks and climbing to be flashy colours. Nothing worse than to look like a rock to an eye of a potential search party.

    • @rasmuspreston
      @rasmuspreston 24 дня назад

      Thanks for the input :) It has been discussed in a previous comment as well. Color might be seen as a personal preference, but there is certainly merit to the argument that brighter colors help in rescue situations. Did you notice the bright orange helmet? :) it is generally agreed that safety orange is the best option. Hey thanks for watching! Go for it! I went with Chamonix Experience (www.chamex.com) as I had previously done a mountaineering course with them. I just requested the same guide as I had for that course. They are expensive, but very professional and I can only give them my full recommendation. We went in start September, but every year is different. I would say that you have a bigger chance of avoiding high temps late in the season. But obviously I have only climbed it once, so I am not the expert. If you haven't already watched it, I have a gear guide for Mont Blanc on my channel as well. Have fun!

    • @rasmuspreston
      @rasmuspreston 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! I went barefeet. It was very cold and there was a lot of sharp rocks! My girlfriend was wearing some neoprene shoes, and that is what I would recommend :) Some people just get their trailrunners wet because they dry rather quickly, but I have no experience doing that. Also remember to unbuckle your hip belt and sternum straps on the backpack before crossing. That way you can quickly drop it if you fall so you dont get dragged down. Same goes for boots, dont tie them together and carry them around your neck. They can fill with water and drag you down too. Let me know if you have other questions :)
