1986 V12 XJS Power Windows Electrical Glitch - diagnosed and fixed.
Here I explore the fault of my 1986 XJS, using the manual and wiring diagrams to find the fault was with the relay - but I tested everything along the way. The relay hard to get to and hard to know where it is.

Removing The Airpump from North Ameican XJ S V12

Wiper Motor Overhaul on an 1986 XJ-S V12
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.4 года назад
Here I removed, tear down and re-grease a wiper motor. I learn as I go, and the camera work is not great. I made this because I would have liked to watch one before I did this, but there wasn't one available, so here it is. Comments/questions welcome. Especially on whether the wipers have a "park" mechanism that I should be seeing - i.e. a lowering out of view when switched off. Thanks, all. Peter

    Peter, the other thermal/circuit breaker is for the power door locks. Go to jagrepair dot com, under the electrical section, go to the XJ6/XJ12 page and download the 1987-1988 electrical guide at the top of the page. It also has the XJS in it. The 1987 section will be very close to your 1986, and the diagrams are broken down by system, much easier to follow than the diagram you have. It also has detailed diagrams of the locations of electrical components. I use those diagrams for my 1985 coupe, and they are almost identical to the car. Sometimes fuses went to locations or became inline, but the part locations and color codes are the same.

    Have the 1987 model, I just ran the vacuum direct from under the intake into the dump valve and on to the distributer vacuum advance. This works exceptionally well. Car starts first kick every time and no longer smokes the garage out. Noted with this set up that you can and do occasionally get a very slight pause in engine if the dump valve kicks in, but the rest of the timed start up vacuum spaghetti and solenoids is best just removed if you live in a normal temperature country. I now get better fuel economy and the car doesn't over heat like it did when the vacuum advance didn't work thanks to the spaghetti of valves timers and redundant thingamajigs. Used the same clear blue vacuum pipe you did- its rather nice... Ali express The other thing did was drilled a few holes in air intake at front for better breathing and a mild induction noise that sounds better. Thanks for sharing.

    I can speak from experience that the fuel cell is what it is. The sheet metal is very soft and susceptible to rusting through. The gasoline smell is generally numerous, numerous micro pinholes weeping raw fuel fumes into the boot and at that point should really be replaced with a new one that has been sealed prior to installation. I stripped the primer/paint off of mine and mixed up polyester resin and Aerosil recoating the entire exterior of the cell before refinishing in order to make sure it does not weep fumes into the boot with the battery and external fuel pump and electric antennae etc...... fuel fumes without ventilation is bad news.

Regarding the "park" function: Mine works as follows: When I switch off the wiper at the stalk, the wipers sweep once more to the rest position. Rest position looks very similar to how you set yours when switched off. BTW - Mine is a LHD 1987. It has the same Lucas Wiper system like yours and parks to the left. It doesn't seem to get in the way of vision when parked. Hope this helps! Thanks again! Dave (in San Diego).

    Hi Peter. Love the video, very informative. I have a 1984 XJS SC and I have removed the cluster and found a white wire that come up from fuse 4 in the main fuse box which I believe is the main power for cluster. Before the white wire gets to the connector (smaller of the 2 cluster connector's) there appears to be what looks like a bulb holder, which has burnt out badly, the center of whatever it is that goes into it (bulb/fuse?) Seems to be fibrous with a winding of fine wire. Do you have any idea what that be so I can buy a new one. I have looked on service manual and spoke to David Manners rep but no joy on what it can be. Any ideas? Cheers

  • @Stratoszero
    @Stratoszero 3 года назад

    What exactly was wrong with your blower to necessitate removal, you just seem to put it straight back in again! I would have liked to see the insides. I have a DB7 V12 with a passenger side noise (a random speed related click, like some foreugn object is catching the blades, or the fan as a whole is loose on the pintle). I have been told the blower is XJS, and the verbal descriptions I have read about removal match with your excellent video. This looks absolutely back btreaking leaning in through the door, how you do not have to add sweary bloops is beyond me. I have a horrible feeling removing the seat would help, which is really annoying as I've just put them back in after renewing the carpet and Aston have made the seat bolts ridiculously tricky to get aligned.

      It was a while I go i did this, but i recall your problem vaguely. Didn't i hold the bolt from the underside?

      @@peteraves581 I held the bottom of the bolt while I unscrewed from the top. Replaced it with new bolt. Thanks

    At 3:38 you say you are going to leave a link to where you found the wiring diagrams for the Lucas motor. I think that's what Broke Ass Civic below wanted to know, as do I.

      Sorry for missing that, Lanejenner. I'll look for wiring later and post it.

      Hello again, the information I was referring to at 3:38 is on pages 625 and 628 in the book by Kirby Palm, kindly made available free and for download on the web - search using "Kirby Palm's Jaguar XJ-S Help Book - Jag-lovers"... you should get it easy enough. LMK if you don't find it.

    Greetings. Quick question. Colour is Soverign Gold Metallic? Same as mine... Regards, Christian

      You mean the color of my brake fluid? ;-) No, I know you men the car. I actually don't know it's name. I have some touch up paint but haven't used it for a while....not quite as long as the brake fluid's been sitting in my car, but for a while. A good color that's growing on me.

    Hello Peter! I have to do the other side. Is it that easy or a nightmare?

    • @peteraves581
      @peteraves581 3 года назад

      Hello Clemens, yes, a pain, but on an XJS, coming out without having to take the dash off feels like a success! I haven't done the RHS, but feel I should at some point to clean or 36 years of grime! Without the instruments and steering column it might be easier. I'd appreciate any feedback after you have done it. Peter

    The Supplementary Air Valve is not the same as the Extra Air Valve (Auxilary Air Valve). The EAV is on the LHS of the engine and regulating the idle. The SAV is activated when the A/C compressor kicks in to raise idle.

      I agree with part placement (left vs right) and the role each part plays, but I thought the idle control part was called AAV and the a/c comp+D part was called EAV or SAV.
