Bird Photography on Helgoland: Northern Gannets
In this first episode of my vlog from Helgoland (a small german island in the North Sea), I share my experience photographing one of my favourite bird species: Northern gannets (Morus bassanus), that I actually met for the very first time just 2 years ago during my first visit on Helgoland.
Follow my journey spending time with these incredible seabirds, busy protecting their nests and raising their chicks. In terms of photography, my goal was documenting the family life but also impact of the bird flu and of plastics. And I was really hoping for some golden light as I never had it during my first time around the island...How did it go? Watch until the end to find out :)

My Bird Photography Lens Broke during a Trip
Просмотров 10 тыс.5 месяцев назад
My dear Canon RF 100-500mm which is the lens I use 99% of the time for my wildlife photography randomly decided to abandon me after less than 2 years use while I was on a wildlife photography trip on one of places I love the most, Helgoland. Join me on this small vlog while I test if the lens has been fixed and I share what I have been up to during the past few month of absence from RUclips. Tr...
Why are there so few Women in Wildlife Photography?
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Wildlife photography is still largely men-nominated (and the disparity is even greater when looking at the professional level). But do people realise this? And which are the reasons why there are less women wildlife photographers? Are the challenges specific to genders (not only women, but also men and non-binary) people face while doing wildlife photography? To answer these questions I conduct...
I used my old BEGINNER budget gear for Bird Photography...and got surprising results

Gear matters less than what most people think. Join me in this new adventure, where I bring my very first bird and wildlife photography set-up (a Canon 1300D and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5,6 IS STM lens) for a session in the park and I compare the results with photos taken with my current professional gear (Canon R5 and Canon RF 100-500mm lens). I feel there's way too much emphasis put on gear...
I Quit my Job to become a Wildlife Photographer
Просмотров 30 тыс.11 месяцев назад
If someone 4 years ago would have told me “Chiara you’re going to be a Wildlife Photographer” I would have laughed at them. All of a sudden, life put a robin on my path when I was struggling with anxiety, and perhaps, that was meant to be. Because I needed it. So today it is true. I decided to leave my old life behind and pivot completely my career. I launched my business as a freelance wildlif...
Editing a Bird photo: Easy step-by-step Tutorial
Просмотров 21 тыс.Год назад
This is an example of a very natural editing style for bird photography, which doesn't aim to alter the scene but only to enhance its aspect as it was originally. These are the steps I follow for the post-processing of most of my wildlife photos, although the "intensity" will be different depending on the starting point. This was a pretty good photo to start with, so it didn't require much work...
How I spent the summer travelling for amazing birds and wildlife photography
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.Год назад
I have been away - and this is why! I was very busy with bird and wildlife photography and some other exciting projects. I spent the summer travelling between Italy, where I kept working with my camera traps, Shetlands, which literally stole my heart with its amazing wildlife and...at my laptop in Belgium to prepare all the paperwork to start my business! 00:00 Introduction 00:46 Italy and came...
Birding in the most unknown region of Italy
Просмотров 8 тыс.Год назад
Explore with me the amazing birds of my local birding patch in a quiet countryside corner of the most unknown italian region: Molise! This is the most exciting time for birdwatching and bird photography with many migratory species arriving to breed! We start literally around my house where some sparrow drama is ongoing - my Italian sparrows now have to deal with new neighbours, the Spanish spar...

Thank you for this tutorial. Please allow me the liberty of giving some feedback with regard to the audio of this video. There is a slight reverberation, causing your voice to be harsher than it truly is🤗 Again, please excuse me, but if you can find a way to dampen the noise slightly, your wonderful voice will come out clearer. Respectfully, MK
Hey Marty, thanks a lot for your message! On that day I had a problem with my mic cable so I had to use the laptop mic (not ideal 😂). But I got a new one immediately after as I agree it is not extremely pleasant to listen at!
Yes, I also spent a week on Helgoland this year in june to take some photos and videos. It's very relaxing on the island and I'll be there again next year. The one gannet has unfortunately had the green rope around its neck for over 2 years 😕. Thanks for sharing your experiences on the island. 👍
Great story, thank you for sharing, greetings from Mexico.
Very interested in your insights. This is my third video of yours. You didn't seem happy? It didn't turn out as you planned. But... Wow what a wonderful place you were in. Probably cost a lot of money and didn't get the shots you seek.
Hello Mary! :) I'm not sure why you got the impression I wasn't happy, because some of my happiest moments are related to that island and this trip (despite my lens broke!) :) Also I am not sure what you're referring to when you say it didn't turned out as I planned? If it is maybe that I mentioned at the beginning I was after some nice light? But indeed I got it as shown in the second part of the video. And I got all the shots I wanted to get out of this trip, for example documenting chicks and using colours :)
As someone living in belgium also wanting to make a trip to helgoland. 😊 what is the best way to travel by train ?
Look for trains from Brussels to Hamburg or Cuxhaven. Getting to Hamburg is easier (and a train less) but the catamaran from there has far higher chances of getting cancelled for weather reasons, whereas from Cuxhaven there's a ferry that is way more reliable. Anyway it is quite a long journey with changes so difficult to depart from Belgium and get on Helgoland in the same day using public transport (unfortunately)
@chiaratalia_wild thank you verry mutch for the great tips i will look it up. :) Keep up the great photography :)
It was really great and understandable thank you for this video, specially with the really light color grading I found that super as it makes the bird looks more natural, I’ll definitely follow this way you showed
I need to point out that women have played a large roll in the history of photography, If there are more men than women in the wildlife photo genras it's only due to interest not barriers. Wildlife photography is a solo activity the only barrier is yourself.
Thank you for sharing this information. Well done and keep up the good work.
I was wathcing your video, as the idea of becoming a photographer makes round in my mind, when my 20yo daughter approaches me and says "uhmm that really suits you", and left. She became my Robin. Thanks for this video, it warmth my heart.
The eye tip is priceless! Going out this afternoon and giving it a go on a river bank where tons of different kinds of birds congregate. Thanks for the tips!!
I'm 36 and trying to transition from a lifetime behind a desk in IT to wildlife photography. I have severe GAD and was agoraphobic for 2 years. I lost 175 lbs and got a camera. Now I am out on the trails every other day getting better and better. Thanks for the inspiration to keep going. Truly admirable :)
So nice editing!Congrats!!! :)
Please please please never leave the job that gives you stable income until you know your hobby will provide you with at least as much income to pay for everything you need to subsist. Please.
Very enjoyable listen. Now I have a weird craving for "Fish & Chips" ?! And I'm not even in England anymore...
Such a brave move to make Chiara and I wish you all the very best. Just subscribed to your channel and really looking forward to following your new adventure over the coming months. They say when a Robin appears close to you it's actually a close family member who has passed away and is coming back to check up on you. Not sure how true that is but I like to believe it is. Best wishes Joe.
Lovely images 👏👏
This is the first of your videos that I’ve watched Chiapas and really impressed and good to see a video on straight forward processing. I’m a bit of a novice with editing and also not a big fan of it but ok in making subtle changes. Love my bird photography so will now subscribe. Keep up the good work. 😀👍
Been following you on IG for a while and have been so impressed by your work and improvement over the last few years! Following here now, too!
You can say all day long that the gear is less important than the photographer, but most people will never believe you.
Excellent! We live in Alaska where the golden hour in the summer is 9pm to 5am and in the winter 10am to 3pm. Excellent advice (Eye level and catch light in the eye is also important.) 3 Ps: Photographer position, planning and patience!
you're adorable. 🙃 but its true even for backyard/balcony photographers like me, learning bird habits is very helpful: where they tend to land; how long they tend to stay in one spot (hint: the smaller the bird, the less time you have).
My new camera 24-1,000mm
Heading to Iceland and Norway. 23 hr sun low. May 2025
Great video! Thanks for sharing
Thank you it helped me a lot as a beginner! Do you have any other videos like this? I would love more videos on editing like this of diffferent birds and scenarios and colors to keep learning thanks!
Chiara - 1 comment - don't trust Lightroom's RAW edits and presentation of your RAW file. Lightroom applies an edit to your RAW file and it is not the *true* indication of the RAW data. ONLY rawdigger will construct an accurate representation of the image from your raw sensor data (and its histogram is far more accurate than Lightrooms etc).
I am not picking on Lightroom btw - my comment applies to other RAW editing software (C1 pro, Canon DPP etc).
Inspiring! That’s it, no more words needed 👌🏻
How do you make money to fund your trips?
I quit posting on social media and deleted ig fb and it's quite difficult but the much needed reason is instagram really sucks I am posting continuously for 2 years and i feel nothing i gained from this social media platform i feel really bad about my pictures lot's of Time but right now I am enjoying my life ofline no pressure of posting and also no doom scrolling still doing photography but for myself yeah if in future ever there's any community or platform of photography comes i reconsider about joining
Hi
Me encataría saber tu estrategia. Gracias bonita por tu info.
Thank you for this video. My partner (bird watcher, f) and I (wildlife photographer, m) recently had a conversation about why so few women are to be found photographing wildlife or watching birds and we came came to similar conclusions. It's interesting that your survey corresponds very closely with our assumptions. Bit it is a shame, because it would certainly do the community good if there were more gender than just (cis) men. But creating awarenes is a good start. Thank you for that.
Thank you for your Video 😊I will go in some weeks and had now a little insight about Helgoland, excited to visit this island. I hope the gannets will still be there🤩
Very good! Like your workflow and choice of nature style
That’s great advice to photograph surroundings
Amazing tips. God bless
Wonderful shots, beautiful nature thanks for sharing
As someone that is in the same position as you were; brand new to photography and no experience, these tips are invaluable! I had the exact problem of feeling like I wasn't close enough. I cannot wait to try some farther away shots!
Thanks so much for your comment 🥰 I’m glad this was helpful!
You are a beautiful human being.
💚
You're a true leader.
Ciao sei italiana?
Ciao Alessio, sisi sono italiana 😊
Very scientific. A good objective overview. Also quite concerning. How do these data relate to female photographers in other fields?
I quit my job as a scientist when I was about 33 (20 years ago), moved to Spain and started to sell my photos. Mainly flowers (I like gardening) but also other wildlife, landscape and local street photography. I lived in the Sierra Nevada mountains for about three years. My life was all photography and I loved it. Unfortunately I'm not very good at making money that way but the experience was fantastic. Your story is amazing. I wish you all the best. I have had a hiatus in my photography for the last few years. Your journey has helped re-motivate my own passion for photography and nature.
Love the sheeps relaxing next to the bench :-)
Ahahahah yes they were totally enjoying their life! 😂
Wonderful shots of a wonderful trip, Chiara! Thanks so much for letting me tag along!
Thank you Jon for watching the video! ❤️
