Wesley Macintyre was a survivor. On D- Day June 6, 1944 during the Allied Invasion at Normandy, Macintyre’s landing craft came under attack; he was the only one not killed. He remembered stepping over the bodies of his friends, crawling through the bloody wash, to get to safety. Several times in his days as a long-haul trucker, Macintyre been in collisions and thrown through the windshield of his truck. And in Gulfport, he fell off a roof he was fixing.

I drove over the bridge yesterday. I was 13 when this happened, and remembered it as I drove over. The bridge to this day is intimidating to drive over, it's steep up and narrow. Unreal that a person could have survived the fall, and then the luck to get up above to the air, then rescued. Truly a miracle.

John Lerro was an incompetent pilot who improperly calculated the risk associated with navigating a large vessel through a tight corridor during a storm and with faulty navigation systems. He should have just stopped when the weather got bad. But this dumb bast@#& thought he could do it anyway; playing with peoples lives. This idiot struck one of the bridge peirs before; making this a repeat accident. So now everyone is feeling sorry for this punk who has seemed to escape the consequences of his incompetent/criminal actions and is giving him a pass. Smh

Hello Mr. Hite, Remember it very much, being retired Greyhound driver from St. Petersburg Florida, crossed Skyway constantly, living in Ft. Lonesome and Lithia at the time.. Now living in Leakey, Texas close to Uvalde, Texas!! My name is Gus Evers!!

I was traveling with my parents that morning over the bridge. Traffic was slow because of visibility. I was only 5 years old so I remember some parts. My parents remember vividly as they got on the flat part of the bridge hearing what they thought was a loud clap of thunder but it was the ship hitting the bridge. Here we are 42 years today of this tragedy and my family has never forget the events of that day. May those who lost their lives that day on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Rest In Peace.

My family came here from Cuba. I was born in '79 and throughout my entire life my Mother's worst fear was another Skyway. The way she's always spoken about it, the look on her face, it's something I can't explain except to say it haunts her. She was supposed to have been on the bridge that day but being a single Mother to an under 2yr old she had a last minute change of plans that probably saved her life. A Tampa tragedy that will forever effect those it touched. I miss you Bob Hite, the news just isn't the same without you.

Was 18 when this happened and had just turned to go toward the bridge when it came over the radio. Watched sharks from a safe distance and have been terrified of the bridge since and refuse to go on it again!

Today makes exactly 41 years since the Skyway Bridge disaster... Not a mention of it on the local media, either. I was 12, close to 13 when this took place and I lost two good friends, out of the 35 who perished. I hope this doesn’t happen to those who died during 9.11, another 21 years down the road.

It's funny (in a NOT funny way) that they interviewed people who just didn't get on the bridge that morning - and classified them as survivors. My father died that day along with 34 other people. No one has EVER interviewed me or my family - who ARE survivors, that lost loved ones and asked how WE feel about the tragedy that took our family members from us. 41 years ago today. And I've never been asked how it felt at 16 years old to lose your dad in a bizarre, unimaginable way.

Thankyou for this Memorial. You have brought names to the unfeeling numbers. As I watch it I learned how many young lives ended in those minutes. Makes me think of a verse from another Maritime Disaster "The Edmund Fitzgerald" ..."Where does the Love of God go when the waves turn the minutes to hours". Thank Jesus more did not die. I can't imagine being the guy who stopped mere feet from going over, getting getting out of the car running back down the Skyway in the fog trying to stop the oncoming traffic. If you were stopped on that bridge within :15 minutes of it going down you got a second chance at life!!!

My father, Captain James Gallagher, was a Tampa Bay Harbor Pilot. I met Captain Lerro when I was 15, on the dock one evening at Egmont Key. I will never forget the talk we had, so many years ago. He felt deeply about the human condition and was one of the kindest men I have ever met. He was gutted by that tragedy. I weep today in memoriam.
