Why Bar Lines Are NOT Sacred in Fast Piano Progress
In this video, I talk about:
- How students and musicians, in general, let bar lines limit their practice decisions (and thus their progress) way too much
- How a single measure of a difficult piece may be literally 8 to 10 times more difficult than a single measure of an easy piece… and how we should adjust accordingly!
- What it would be like if there were twice as many bar lines - how would everyone’s practice change?

You have a major At Etude.
I’m going to go find my sheet music for this piece. Thank you for the inspiration!
You’ve got the right hand part sounding incredible, but I think you still need to drill your left hand on its own slower and build back up so that you have the confidence to voice the notes there for a more full sound without covering any gaps. Honestly amazing work though! I know how many years it takes to get to that level!
This is an awesome concept
Impressive
Bravo 👍
I’ve seen that dude on the profile pic on thumbtack 🤨
Major At Etude.
Imma crash out why is this so underrated..

You're so good! This deserves more attention.
Thanks so much for your kind words! 🙂🙏
Serendipity all the way around . . . .
Thanks for watching! 🙂🙏
@@davidchangmusic Chopin is ALWAYS serendipitous . . . as was your proximity to the piano!
I think this is really great strategy overall but why would you wanna add in reverse when you could just add from the beginning it kind of seems arbitrary? Even a little counterintuitive.
Also, what app are you using for this notation on your iPad?
And rather than referring me to David Chang’s, could you summarize maybe like I’m a five-year-old
Great question - the short answer if you were a 5-year-old: it’s bad to add only from the beginning because we’ll do the beginning too much and the end too little. Slightly more sophisticated answer: since music moves forward in time, we will always have a BIAS towards the BEGINNINGS of everything we practice - whether that’s a page, a line, or a measure. When we add from the beginning, we’ll always end up neglecting the ending more often. Adding in reverse counteracts this natural bias. You’re right - almost everything about good practice is counterintuitive - the opposite of what normal people would do :) Longer answer in a video I made a long time ago - ADDING IN REVERSE in Piano Practice: ruclips.net/video/hFF0BPqVA3k/видео.htmlsi=G9CAHxUDf5nzYgZH Believe it or not, the app for notation is just native iOS / Apple functionality! I save the pictures in Files, but you can do the same thing in Photos. I use my iPad for Markup, typically, but you can even use your iPhone as well if you want to use Perfect Shapes :) I would Google anything here you’re not sure about. Hope this helps!
How do you get the left hand so fast? And what kind of piano is that?
Great question! Just a few ideas for how to get the left hand so fast through the lenses of some of my unique learning methodologies: Physical Methodology ruclips.net/p/PLMCgf8RRa-ZMKaZ4YZH529YG4t8mX65dP&si=WIL3umtDvLXKPUHo Logical Methodology ruclips.net/p/PLMCgf8RRa-ZNNMpY_1-52-dLSc-PXZdmJ&si=JB7AtvyK_Tm7rHTv There are more playlists on my channel if you want to layer many more strategies, mindsets, etc. The piano is my wife’s childhood piano in Shanghai :) You can see the brand name on the piano.
@@davidchangmusic thank you, keep it up
Unbelievable
Thanks so much!
So sad to see people passing away😢
Nice playing ❤ With the simle on face A classical delight
Thank you so much! 🙂🙏
Ok, that's quite interesting actually 😊
Glad you find this interesting! 🙂🙏
This is awesome. When did u start learning the piano?
Thank you! More than 28 years ago, I think?
David, this is really fantastic. One of your best videos. Had no idea the 'adding in reverse' would be applied so rigorously! Looking forward to trying this approach out on a Joplin rag that's been a challenge to play through. Curious, have you ever considered one day filming your approach with a student?
Thanks so much for your extremely kind words, Jason! So glad you find this helpful. Yes, basically all of the layers of strategies / mindsets on my entire channel can be in effect / layered simultaneously… and there are many, many other layers not yet here too! But I consider adding in reverse to be quite foundational for sure. Great question - I’ve recorded parts of lessons at times, but it’ll always necessarily be small snippets out of context - that’s the issue with intricate strategy. One example of one simple concept (such as a rudimentary “adding in reverse” example) could be 5-7 minutes, but an attempt to record the “full approach” would be hundreds or thousands of hours long.
May I ask which piece is this from Philip Glass? Sounds gorgeous 👍
Thanks so much! This is “Opening” from Glassworks.
new subscriber!
Thanks for subbing! :)
Cute lil fan 😇
Haha yes! Funnily enough, there was an adult listening later who also pretended to play piano in the air at some point while listening to me - perhaps unconsciously.
excellent & thank you❤😊
Thank YOU so much! :)
Wow beautyful
Thanks so much!
I like the little girl “playing” in the background!
Haha yes! What’s funny is that later, there was an adult who also “played” in the air at some point while listening to me - perhaps out of her conscious awareness!
❤ that little girl is going to be a pianist... you inspired her 🎉😊
I certainly hope so! 🙂🙏❤
I USE THE EXACT SAME PEN.
Nice! I actually greatly prefer these 0.9 mm mechanical pencils - much harder for the point to break.
Nice! I actually greatly prefer these 0.9 mm mechanical pencils - much harder for the point to break.
How do you read that?
I have some really old scores from my grandma and she notated a lot of things, but unfortunately not the date. It would've been so interesting to see that! My Schubert Impromptu score is from the early 70s
Ah yes! Great to keep some dates / records for the future for sure :)
This is almost like a musical diary and good way to reflect back 👍
That’s a great way to put it!
Beethoven's most underrated works. Deserve more recognition.
👍
As someone with aphantasia, I find this incredibly difficult but I've been trying to get myself to do it and the results show!
Ah, great to hear you’re getting results and thanks for sharing this! Ironically, I am not able to picture a lot of things visually - I can’t picture faces and many other objects. My mental practice is extremely attuned to my sense of touch - distances, exact sensations of white and black keys against my fingers, etc. - and my sense of hearing - I almost think it’s like a blind person’s mental practice. Eyes-closed practice and ever-constant internal singing of the music are both crucial in building this skill - I should talk about that more. Keep going :)
You need more recognition that’s crazy
Thanks so much for your kind words! 🙏🙂
I never thought of that... crazy
Thanks for watching! 🙏
@@davidchangmusic but this is true asf tho cuz people be hogging the piano for "practice" when they learnt moonlight sonata off RUclips. Now I can finally see the benefits of sheet music.
