I started restoring old engines and gensets during covid19, I was putting montarges of stills on youtube as I thought others may like to see what I do, it then progressed into make video's of the restorations but I never understood how hard it could be to video and referb. I try to do different things in each video to improve them for the viewers as I know it's not fun watching boring video's. I'm very grateful for all constructive criticism and welcome suggestions from the viewers

Hi Barry, Was the O ring for relief valve the right shape and size, because I bought an O ring kit which were the same parts number as yours. What I found out is they reduced the size of the relief valve outlet and the O ring I recieved doesn't fit the pump I have. Looks like I'll have to get an O ring custom made. Cheers Bruce
Hi Bruce, some after market parts are not fit for purpose, some of those Oring kits have problems with the cross section size, I found that I had to buy metric equivilants as they had a larger cross section, Have a look on my community section there should be an email on there regarding the sizes for the pump, you'll need to check to amke sure you've got protrudance above the surface to give you the seal, I found also the kit for the camels humps was useless, again metric Orings where put in there. many thanks Barry
This video help me more than you realise. Thank you so much Barry. Cheers Bruce.
Hi Bruce, only to pleased to be able to help, many thanks Barry
I miss you doing the tractor. Your inspiration endures though as I have got stuck in with my mate on his DB850 and started reassembly. Complete strip of the front end and engine. In the last few weeks 4 new liners in, crankshaft in, new rings gapped and fitted to all 4 pistons and home in the new pots. Looking good and little tips from you helped along the way . Cheers
Hi Crf, many thanks for that, I'll be back on the tractor as soon as we get moved into the new place, I'll get an update out soon followed by a Christmas video which wil explain, hopefully why we've been a bit side tracked, I'm so pleased the video's have been of use to you many thanks Barry
Ticking over like a mouse's heart !
yes Tom made a good job of that one
does it remove only rust or also grease and oil
Hi jan, yes it does, I would always give the parts a token clean before, however it will work even if not cleaned as the hot soapy water begins to disolve the grease and oil and then get to work on the rust and the best part is when your finished, let it stand for two or three days and the dirt and rust settles to the bottom and the water can be dispossed of down the drain, then let the rest evaporate and your left with rusty dust that can be put in the bin. make sure your in a well ventilated area as this gives off hydrogen which can go pop if you don't treat it with respect. cheers Jan Barry
@manfromthemist1958 Thank you for the answer I want to clean my cylinder head it is very dirty with soot deposits
Wow - such a lot of hard work and it shows. excellent work.
Cheers Matt, thanks ,it was a lot of hard work but during covit we had lots of time to fill in and I needed something to use up the day light. It also lead to bigger/more expensive things that I'm busy restoring but like the lister the tractor will also have to be sold as I don't have the luxury of space to be able to keep it and then have anther project. many thanks for watching and commenting Barry
Hi Barry, Thank you, for all the detail you go into on the David Brown 990. I'm now able to order a seal kit for the hydraulic pump on my tractor, because you gave out the pary No. for the kit, which is exactly the same as mine. None of the dealers here in Australia know about this, they only want to sell me a complete pump. AU$500 - $1000. Thank you so much. Cheers Bruce Thank you so much
G Day Bruce, sorry for the late reply but we've been very busy with the renovation to a new old house and it's taking much of our time at the moment, many thanks for the comments I'm pleased to see you enjoy the video's and that they are helpfull to you, I know what you mean about the dealers trying to up sell items that suit them and not the buyer, not sure if you've come across him yet, but a fellow countryman of yours might just be able to help with spares, Lance Maskell, AKA bundy bears shed in Queensland might just be able to point you in the right direction, thanks for viewing hopefully we'll get back to tractors in the net few weeks many thanks Barry
Many 💖 Many thanks 😊 🙏 nice 👍 😊 works 💪 👷♂️ 👍 😀 👌
Hi Narendra, you are vert wlecome, thanks for viewing the channel and the comments. many thanks Barry
this is the best video ever seen on the hydraulics of a selectamatic. adjusting the spoolvalve should interest any hobbyist. but how important is the tcu valve?when you don't use the tcu?
Hi Jan, I would think it's very important, even if not used, My thought train would be if the valve is setup correctly 100% it's easier to diagnose problems when they occur, if you only set the bits you use, the bits we don't set may have an adverse effect on the remaining parts of the valve, and it's only a two minute job, Self satisfaction should also be considered, if it's worth doing do it right. and it's fun. Cheers Jan Barry
I'm not sure if there is a difference between a 47 or 49 cylinder head From 1968 onwards all DB tractors were fitted with a new engine
Hi Jan, not sure if the heads are different but there is a change in part number after 71, some of the fittings also look different and there a difference in the valves, pre 76 used different exhaust and inlet, post 71 used the same valve for both

Hello Barry. I know this is a year since you've asked but did Tom get his paint sorted? I have an opened tin of Agriline DB Poppy Red paint if he's still looking. Thanks again for your videos, I've just ordered a 200mm long 3/8 bar for the detents. The gearbox is about to be removed on my 885. Many thanks .
Hi Mark, sure he must have as I've never heard anything back from him, many thanks Barry
What kind of color did you use? Thanks
Hi John, I used red oxide for the primer and DB choclate for the final colour
Hello Barry My liftarms wil going down. Anything looks good Spool valve is moving TCU valve is moving also I dont have reinstal the the spring and the cable on the backside and I dont reinstal the lever Where you normally operate the lift. I pull and push the rod.
Brilliant so pleased you got it working well done Barry
Nice work once again Barry and another job ticked off the list. I hope the plastering went well and I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
Hi Terry, it's looking even beter today, plaster just finished and it's looking good many thanks Barry
Hello. Many thanks again for this video. One of my 885 wheel bearings is shot, about to do this job. For anyone about to do this job, Knott trailer brake shoes are the perfect dimensions for the packing pieces, just chop the brake lining pieces off. I happened to have some in a scrap pile, thank goodness i don't throw stuff away. Many thanks.
cheers Mark thanks for sharing that it'll save people a lot of time looking or making packing pieces, many thanks Barry
🪚🔨
we needed Charlies help, couldn't have done it without him.
Making progress there 😀M
Cheers Marshall, slowly but we're moving forwardm which isn't a bad thing many thanks Barry
Many thanks for these videos. I recently bought an 885, first main jobs are hydraulics and brakes. Have removed the pto housing and hydraulic pump, will be removing the valve chest tomorrow. So far i have discovered handfuls of sand/grit and a severed pto oil feed pipe. Your videos are a tremendous help, thank you.
Hi Mark, only to pleased to help, I'm pleased you find the video's useful. Sounds normal for an old tractor, just make sure you wash everything thoughly as hydraulics and sand really don't like each other. You'll find , when you take your valve chest to bits, the tolerences inside are microns and what ever you do, do not use abraasive paper or paste to clean the spools and inserts, use only metal polish and newspaper. enjoy many thanks Barry
Wheres the project manager when you need her lol throughly enjoyed watching you whilst i had my lunch very interesting project you got going
Cheers Jon, I'm pleased to see your enjoying them, it is good fun really to be doing all this work knowing that it will all pay back in the dark cold nights. Projects manager was at home doing lots of projecty things, However I did put a request in for assistance with the 22mm pipe work. cheers Jon Barry
In my house the plug sockets are from 72mm ( ideal), 60mm ( can put up with) & 20mm (far to low!) from the floor. Being tall the higher the better! Good job on your 1st fix electrics.
What are air walls?
Hi TC, the electrics in the house were put in at 300mm in the days it was built, then there was a change in the regs to make it easier for disabled people and they raised the height to 450mm, funny though as I get older I doappreciate the higher sockets, not having to get on your knees to plug in lol cheers TC Barry
HI TC, I'll do a little bit in the next video, as it will be eaasier to show than describe, got one coming up about the central heating next. many thanks Barry
Good work Barry, Things are so very different over there with power and air gaps etc.
G Day Lance, our lot are trying all the time to make things harder for the DIYer, even though it's not rocket science. because they are incapable of doing anything but pushing a pen, they think we're all the same. looking forward to your next stew and hopefully the new traile hitch. cheers Lance Barry
Well done Barry it's never easy running cable through a building, I was saying attach string to the first cable, as you later said, whilst watching the video - it sounds like we've had similar experiences. I love the fishing rods for feeding the cable, I've used curtain wire (for net curtains) to feed narrow wires such as telephone or alarm cable an an 8ft length of plastic rail for heavier cables in the past but your set of rods is a much better system. Keep up the good work Terry
cheers Terry, some of the shots make the sub floor look clean, then you hit the areas where the builders left the rubble in the void or the heating engineers left all the trunking from the hot air system in place and it's nipped between the concrete and the joist so you cannot get over it or under it. Before I got the rods which save a lot of time I would use old wire coat hangers, straightened out and taped together, those rods are a god send. Came in very usefull for feeding the 22mm water pipes as well. many thanks Barry
Where can i find a plate for db 880 selecta ?
try barclay williams, Stuart's got everything.
Where can i find ? I am from belgium
Hi Giovanni, google barclay williams and all of his contact details are on his contact page. many thanks Barry
@manfromthemist1958 there are many...😀😀
Hi Giovanni google Barclay Williams, there's only one, in the UK, I can't put a link here to it as YT won't allow links from outside sites. many thanks Barry
Looking good Barry 👍 the project manager seems to be keeping you on your toes lol 😆
Hi Jon, yes she's keeping tabs on the work, it's aggod jon someone's in charge. Cheers Jon Barry
Nice work once again Barry, I agree with Debs that the internal doors should be 30". A 33" door is normally fitted to an external access, when we got UPVC they fitted a front door with a 30" opening to replace the original 33" door due to the bulk of the frame and when we got a new suite access was so tight that we had to remove the door from its hinges to get the sofa in whereas it sailed through the 33" porch door and into the front room. We do have 27" doors into the downstairs toilet but this works fine. It is a good idea to leave the architraves off (and the skirting boards if you intend to replace them) until the walls have been plastered, but I guess you already know this. All the best Terry
Cheers Terry, I remember once to get a three piece suite in we had to take the big windows in the back out as we couldn't get it throught he door and turned. Modern houses area nightmare. cheers Terry as always ,good to hear form you many thanks Barry
29 - 30in the doors in my house. But it is far from being young! Wider the door the better.
totally agree, my daughters house which was build in the 1800's had 36" doors throughout, great for moving funiture. cheers TC Barry
Good to see the site agent is keeping you form pleasing your self M😀
it's always good to have someone who knows what they're doing,in control, unlike the government. cheers Marshall Barry
It’s probably overheating? I was thinking of using it as a dashcam but they don’t like staying still with no air flow
Hi Baz, gopro's need an air flow to keep cool, they are briliant action cams but out of place in the way I'm using it as the cooling is non exisitant, when you pick them up they are red hot, more so if you use the preview link via blue tooth. need a black diamond cam corder
Best of luck with the renovations and you are right about the electrics, stick with the ring circuits and avoid the radials.
Cheers Spark, I've just ran the adition ring to the office today, twin 2.5mm, theres going to be a lot of outlets on that circuit. many thanks Barry
Hello, Just found your channel recently and was wondering did you ever dismantle and service the injector pump? Many thanks
Hi sparks I did, I took it down to it's last component, cleaned everything and put it back together, unfortunately it was before the video series started, how ever if your looking for the support or help to do it have a look at bundybearsshed, Lance has a couple of video's on the cav pumps, there all the same, funny enough once you see it come to bits, it's not rocket science and you will manage no probs. many thanks Barry
Well i admit your doing rather a good job looks from your walk around outside a cracking bungalow inside will be equally as good im sure. One question ive noticed you seem to have nice floorboards are you going to sand and stain or cover in carpet or anything else?
Hi Jon, the floors are getting wood laminate, carpet and the ensuite will be tiled, It is a cracking bungalow just needs a little TLC and update, well quite a bit of update! it'll be good in the end, cheers Jon Barry
You're really cracking on with the renovations Barry although these sort of jobs are always more involved than you realise at first and end up taking longer than you think they will when you first start out. Good luck going forward and I'm already looking forward to the next episode, just don't over do it, Terry
Cheers Terry, never a trurer word spoken, everything we do has hidden implications and we always need to stop at some point and re assess the situation, the air walls always cause some problems, nearly as many as the solve, some time you can get the feed poles to go over the top sometimes you just gotta cut the floor open just to get one wire or a pipe over it. still have fun at the moment cheers Terry Barry
I have two bent needles and I was wondering how that could happen
It probably happens when someone puts the manifold block back on the front of the valve chest before inserting the needle then try’s to force the needle past the block many thanks Barry
From tractor mechanic to carpenter, you can do it all! I'm with you on the soreness, lol. Spent yesterday and this morning getting another load from the house we're selling. After driving 165 miles down here to the new place, I got out of the truck and my legs almost refused to work! 800mg of Ibuprofen later I'm starting to feel better, lol
Hi Shane, I love the way Americans and Australians talk about mileage as if it’s just around the corner lol, 165 miles for us in the little UK would be a days travel with food stops, traffic jams and road accidents, my ibuprofen come's in a 750ml green bottle with a cork in the top. After that the worlds a great place and I'm 16 again. who said getting old was fun! good luck with the move, your new place looks amazing. cheers Shane Barry
Very helpful
Thank you Robert, I pleased it was of use to you. thanks for watching Barry
It will all come out in the wash!!!! 😀
your right!!
🔨🔨🪚
its good fun though
Hello. Whats your car engine vectra c?
Hi Kasty, it was the 1800 petrol
thank you for your reply. My vectra c engine is 1.9 cdti 110 kw, but probably the principle of operation of the starter is the same, the cog has to slide out and rotate, mine only rotates. Could it be a solenoid problem?
@@kastytismiliauskas-ev7pp your solenoid does two things, when energised it will soot the gear forward to engage the starter ring and when it reaches the end of its travel it will connect the power to spin the motor, so if you motor is turning it's reaching the end of it travel, have a look at your gear is it stuck in one position or can you move it by hand, it may well be just dirt on the shaft it run on, remove the solenoid and check it's pulling the leaver to engage the gear and at the same time give the shaft a wash with brake clean, make sure everythings free and mobile.
Barry This was a very educational video. I am currently doing the same thing. I had the problem that the lifting bars lowered very slowly. First I turn on the button on the front. That wasn't it.Everything was expanded and I saw that the ridge at the bottom of the valve Chest. The spool valve Not or hardly pressed upwards. There are shims where the cam and the arm are attached. I took a chance and removed two of them. Now I see the spool valve Move up and down. It all comes down to very precise, I'll let you know if it worked
Brilliant Jan, hope everything goes well for you lets know how you get on Barry
Bloody hell Barry you are not afraid of a bit of a project. You will probably find it a nice change from the tractor for a while. I find a change of direction now and then refreshing.
G Day Lance, thats very true, It's funny but as you get older jobs that took day's to do now takes weeks, the job hasn't changed, I just got older and less flexible. Knowing that we'll end up with extra rooms so the little people can come and stay and a garage that we can work on the tractor in the winter, win win. cheers Lance Barry
A couple of weeks work there for you and Debs Barrie, good luck with it all, hope wverything goes smoothly. Your'e not moving from Ellington are you?
Hi Ken, noo just moving around the corner to windmill hill, two extra bedrooms and an extra garage. That I've already got full of s**t the more space you have the more rubbish you collect! cheers Ken Barry
I had the same thing, the forgotten bolt 😂
Hi Jan, those little buggers hide everywhere! cheers Jan Barry
A really big project Barry and another series for your RUclips channel if you could fit it in, is this the house with the two garages where you keep the Tractor? If you are concerned about flow on the central heating you could split the circuit, we have a 22mm ring supply from the boiler with one manifold supplying 10mm to 4 rooms at the back of the house and a second manifold supplying 10mm to 3 rooms at the front plus the downstairs bathroom with the upstairs bathroom being teed in with 10mm to the 22mm ring. This has worked great for 30 years - All the pipe in our system is copper and we have a 105,000 BTU boiler. Good luck going forward, it'll be great to see the finished result.
Hi Terry, thats the plan, to run a 22mm flow and return through the bungalow with the rads T'd off, basicaslly forming a very large manifold, I installed the current heating in the house we're now in using manufactured manifolds and it work great, Thought I had nothing else to do but repeat up there, turns out you cannot buy those manifolds anymore, hence the 22mm pipe and loads of reducing T's, It is the house with the two garages, I'm hoping to knock through the wall between then later on and create a double, giving me more space, one strange thing, the consumer unit is in the garage with only an electric roller door on the front, if the socket fuse blows, at the minute you can not get access to it to replace the fuse, this needs sorting PDQ. Cheers Terry Barry
Roller doors often have an access hole where you can insert a lever similar to a car jack handle as a manual override, this is the case at my Dad's garage as he has exactly the same situation with the consumer unit in an otherwise inaccessible location. P.S. You could finish you videos with it's only pipes and wires!
Hi Terry yes we've got that manual over ride system, it's on the inside, like your pipes and wires lol many thanks Barry
You and I must be living the same life just on different continents! I expect we'll finally be settled for our move here in the next month or so.
Hi Shane, I think we're twins in a parrell universe. I couldn't believe it when you said you where moving south to be nearer you family. good luck with the move Barry
Oh god I really don't envy you I hate DIY why are you moving and more importantly has it.a garage or shed for the tractor? I'd be interested in watching this project through with you
Hi Jon, the really big important thing for us is it had three bedrooms so the little people can have a bed when they sleep over at nan and grandads instead of the sofa, once we get in, It also has the added advantage of two garages with high roofs to get rid of the heat in the sommer, now thats a win win. Cheers Jon Barry

Hi mrshyrydr, I'm counting myself lucky it's got a small subfloor before the concrete pad, some of the house round here have concrete floors, now thats a ball acke to install anything new. many thanks for watching, Barry
10mm plastic is not as big as 10mm copper as the extra wall thickness and a insert the joints more like 8mm. Have you got mice? They love foam lagging and some plastic pipes. Tin foil kitchen type round the foam lagging stops them to a point but not completely. Watch out for those old air heating ducts as some contained asbestos in the older ones. All so Artex ceilings had asbestos in it also. Just from what I seen in the video It did not look to be Artex. Old tilers loved to tile on tiles as they said it made the best job. You have taken on a lot there, keep up the good work and it will be finished before you know it. M 😀
Hi Marshall, I know what you mean about the artex, it was installed many many many years ago so we're working on the principle that it as asbestos and all the conversations we've had with plaster's goes the same way, I think we're just going to glue it and plaster over it. I've tried today to take a couple of tiles off to access the stud wall between the kitchen and bathroom as I want to run the pipework for the towel rail through the cavity, thery're on with dot and dab but jee's are they hard to get off, each tile 's coming off in about 5 pieces. might be hiring a power hammer to lighten the load. Cheers Marshall Barry
WOW. That's quite a project, Donna and I spent about 20 years remodeling our family farm house (built 1890). We did it in stages over the years, tearing out the lath and plaster, new wiring and plumbing, insulation and drywall, refinish flooring, and so on. I notice each stage was a little more difficult, do to my age increasing lol, but we are happy we did it. The last area was in fall 2019. When my parents bought the farm in 1962 there was no indoor plumbing, just a hand pump on the well and outhouse of course! Thanks for sharing and best of luck.
Cheers Brad, We would have loved the opportunity to do it one room at a time buit there's that much to do that crossed the entire house it's not feasable as we would be constantly pulling up floors in other rooms to feed cables and pipes etc, We 're hoping to break the back of the big jobs and get some flooring down before we move in at least that way we have a little bit of comfort. chear Brad Barry
