Thank you for explaining the uprising in Westmeath. The focus of the 1798 rebellion usually doesn’t even make a reference to Westmeath even though it was significant. I’d love to watch more videos like this please. I had ancestors in killbeggan and killucan….actually I had ancestors from lots of locations in Westmeath including Flynns and McCormacks. Understanding what they experienced and how they lived is important, I want my children and grandchildren to know our history even though we were born in Australia. We still have our history in Ireland

Great series, TY. Growing up in NYC I knew nothing of my parents' experience in Ireland during the Irish War of Indepedence and the Civil War. But I rembered certain brief statements - one that muy mother's house was burned down 3 times. In HS, at my father's wake, I learned he was active in the War of Independence. Later I learned his younger brother was a hero in that war and in the National Army. I also learned my mother was an old IRA messenger. I had no idea that my grandfather sent 13 tears in hard labor for resisting an eviction, befiore he went to the USA and returned with a nice sum of money. And so on more detail emerged. It not only was an ocean away but also it seemed centuries ago. In my 60s I had a conversation with an Irish student in New England. He was amazed that parents (not grandparents) were active in the War of Independence. I did look in my 40s rather than 60s.

One of Irelands greatest Son’s indeed,and Michael Collins had so much respect for MacEoin that he ordered a daring rescue attempt from the hell of Mountjoy prison,unfortunately it didn’t work out but the likes of Emmet Dalton and Joe Leonard were willing to walk into the lions den to try and get him out,and all of these men were portrayed as assassins and gangsters by the British media and government but in reality they were incredibly brave young men, our country will never see their likes again.

Una Byrne's grandfather (Bernie Gannon) , Legan Co Longford, born in Argentina played the accordion and some of his music is preserved in the ITMA. My father had obtained from him , as far as I know , a method of counting sheep used by farmers who had no formal education...it may have come from England via Argentina..It is different from other primitive English methods illustrated on utuibe and had a sort of rhythmic pulse.

An interesting addition to this incident has been passed down the generations of my family. The shots fired at the car being driven by the British officers were from behind a hedge bordering a farmstead belonging to the Wansboro family. The farm was located where the Jolly Mariner pub once stood, now apartments and a marina. The nearby football field is called Wansboro Field today. Neighbouring land belonged to the Ward family, it is unknown whether they were Involved in the incident. The Wansboro house was one of the houses burnt down by the Black and Tans, it was never rebuilt, the family which consisted of two bachelor brothers moved into the cow shed where they lived out their days until they passed away in the sixties. My grandfather, a third brother had married and moved away from Athlone some years previously, he died tragically in1916 as a result of a fall from a ladder while working in Waterford to support his young family. As there were no direct descendents the land in Athlone valued at £4000 was left to the church.

Well done to Westmeath CC. Great work by Frank and the team ...met Frank , Dermot and Robbie but would not have been in their level of endeavour...though Robbie and Dermot did look after me on Scottish Winter week a good few years back.
