Beautifull belt the lonsdale belt.Never heard of Alan Rudkin but as a kid when he was fighting i never watched the sport.Fighters in his era were more honest,if there werent great fights you routed for them and after paying your ticket knew theyd give it their all.
A great fighter
Johnny is my Nan’s cousin (so my cousin twice removed)
Skeeter won a gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics and became a very close friends with a kid from Louisville who also won a gold medal. his name was Cassius Clay. Wonder what ever happened to that kid?????
Interesting little known fact. Skeeter who has passed away was a PHD at Boston College. He was a true gentleman in and out of the ring. I was pals with his brother Jerry. Good family
Cheers to these two champions! In my view and heart, my Godfather, Raul Vega won that fight. Raul had a week's notice to get ready for that fight, was jetlagged on a cheap passenger flight to London, and had no support besides his young wife and Raulito Jr who was about 3 years old in 66. Say what you will, to me champions are those who show up on time and let them fighting spirits speak for their kind as it may.
Raul Vega was my Godfather. He and my father were young friends in Mexico City where I think Raul worked at a tire repair shop while boxing in his early years. My dad was a taxi driver at the time and an aspiring bull fighter.. Raul was a handsome young man and very kind. And he was a very good fighter, was also a Pan-American champion before turning pro. He used to come by my house to visit, and he would bring me the best toys from the US where he fought many times. And whenever he departed, he would always shake my hand and would slide me dollar bills or pesos so that nobody would take his gifts from me. I last spoke with him in 85 when I wanted to become a fighter myself. He said to come on over, but regretably I didn't make it. So I never saw him again, I still became a fighter, but in the arena of social work. "Pio-pio-pow-pow" he used to say was his best combination. And in this boy's eyes, full of awe and wonder, Raul Vega was and is the greatest champion that ever lived!
I have not seen this before... this is before my time...a very hard fight....
Belter boxer
Great fight by Alan 🥊 R I P 🥊.
Incredible stuff. This is a top 3 all time fight . Ali & Floyd are nowhere even close to being near . THANK YOU!
I was with John today, great guy.
Great boxer
Two great boxers, no longer with us.
Great stuff! vintage
Great fight - the good old days ! Alan deserved this win and it was nice to see such good sportsmanship. The old saying was that 'a good big un' should always beat a good little un' ' Nice to see these great fighters again. So tough on Wally losing his world flyweight title to Chinoi on cuts, after dominating the early rounds , then the same again in the return. ( another story I know) Thank you for up-loading this fight - really enjoyed it !
Any other time he would have been champ. Unlucky to be another to run into Olivares, right at his peak
These men were so damn tough heavyweights would have collapsed!
Hola!
Great effort from the young Liverpudlian, Alan Rudkin - well done Alan ! Liverpool was certainly the capital of England in the 1960s. Best football teams, best pop groups and some of the best boxers too. A great British champion and probably the best British boxer never to win a world title. It was a shame that a world title fight was never arranged in Britain, for him.
Rudkin = Pure Quality

Hi Ronnie Jones, Heidi, and Joanne. We use to ride motorcycles together in the Philippines. We rode to Tagaytay with you and Heidi and you and Heidi visited us at our house in Cavite. We lived outside the base. We met you through Willie Russell. I am glad you had a great career and sorry we lost contact with you and Heidi.
So unlucky. Walter McGowan was a fabulous boxer but seemed to get cut in crucial fights, Up there with Ken Buchanan as Britain's finest!
My dad knew walter really well and i can remember talking to him when i trained in faces( motherwell). Legend
Salvatore Burruni is my great uncle
My dad Alan Rudkin and Salvatore were due to box for the European title in 1969. The fight didn't happen because dad got a World title shot against Lionel Rose.
Thanks for posting!!
No hype--- just 2 good honest tradesmen ----respect to both
Both above & beyond better than Floyd no?
I had it: 01. Harada 02. Even 03. Harada 04. Harada 05. Harada 06. Harada 07. Harada 08. Harada 09. Rudkin 10. Even 11. Rudkin 12. Rudkin 13. Harada 14. Harada 15. Harada Harada 147-140 Rudkin was competitive and you could conceivably give him a couple more rounds, but it's still hard to believe the wikipedia article called the decision "controversial".
I used to know Raul Vega in the 80's. Great sense of humor. R.I.P.
Never New Brian his brother mike top man.
I remember Mike when i was a kid, he was living in Fletcher Drive I think it was in Aigburth. I'm Alan Rudkin's son.
juzzerbell I went to a municipal college with mike in the 90s. Great lad. Only knew Brian through mike.
i remember Mike from when we were kids, hope he's well.
my grandfather is and was one of the greatest fighters in his class #1 in Chicago #4 in the World Everyone he fought was great no bums in his era thank you guys for paving the way
He certainly was King, he fought them all and on the road, respect!
Got the full fight on VHS somewhere.....
My mum Jean Cooke's cousin. I never saw Johnny fight but I did once see his brother Jimmy before he went pro. Jimmy had one pro fight which he won then decided to quit. A pity as it was believed by some that he was destined for greater things than John.
Johnny & Jean are my Nan’s cousin 🫱🏽🫲🏼
jimmy is my grandad
Johnny Cooke is my father - so proud of him. Both he and Brian McCaffrey were great boxers - although boxing has moved on over the years, you don't seem to get great fighters as dedicated to the sport nowadays as they were.
Hi mate, I know Ronnie Cooke ..a relative of his
Johnny Cooke is my Nan’s cousin
Raul Vega my Grandfather
He was my Godfather. He befriended my father when they were both very young working in Mexico City. I adore him for his kindness. I was 2 years old when he fought Rudkin. "Pio-pio-pow-pow" padrino!
,,,
alguien tiene mas peleas de mundo esparza
Hi Juzzerbell, so was Alan your dad? it could be your dad and my mam are cousins :) I love boxing and wonder if its in the blood. :)
Hi juzzerbell, thanks for lookin into it for me, carnt believe its been a year since last post, did you find anything out?? nice1 thank-you :)
Aah, I'm sorry Paul, I'll get back on it. I think me grandad probably was 1 of about 7 lads. I did ask about at the time bet didn't really get anywhere and then it went out my mind. Once again, realy sorry mate. I'll find out what i can over the next few days.
Hello Paul, I've been asking about but My grandad didn't have a brother called Albert. It is possible though that he might of had a cousin called Albert. Maybe one of my great grandad George Cormac Rudkin had a brother who had a son called Albert. The problem is that there is nobody about old enough to remember. Maybe you could find something out from your side.
that's my great Uncle Ronnie!
