I want to aim for gaining wholesale customers but I'm not sure how much to make because what if I fail and am left with so much soap I cannot sell but for wholesale it's expected to have a lot of stock already made to choose from. I would love some authentic guidance on this because I've not done well with retailing so I've already learnt that lesson and don't want to make (and invest in) all of it without knowing exactly how to proceed. It's not the sort of thing you can chip away at, you have to be ready but I only used natural ingredients too so I don't want stock sitting around with scents only fading etc. Please do a video about this, I really don't want to give up but retail is clearly not for me. I'm good at making large batches and very experienced soapmaker, just no good at business.

hi there, thanks for your video, I have always made cold process I have found in NZ with the cold weather in winter the bars can sweat, I am guessing because this is like a salt and salts gets wet when exposed to the air in colder temps, does hot process do the same at all? Just looking at whether to switch over and give the hot a go due to this fact mainly? thanks so much again x

It’s NOT “rubbish”, those are good GUIDELINES for beginner soap makers so they don’t hurt themselves with a boiling hot lye solution or a false trace.

The EO Calculator is a good guideline. Not all the essential oils are listed although it helps when working out the percentages.

Niching down too tightly can also kill your business. The BEST option for any new business person is to start with a wider niche (or even 2-3 niches that gel together very nicely) and then slowly hone it down to whatever seems to sell at a rate higher than the rest and generates more interest. My business originally was going to be soap, but then I expanded to 'home and body', added room fragrance, lip and body scrubs, wax melts, and then eventually home decor such as cushions, table runners, bedding - all with my own designs giving my 'brand' a cohesive look (think Cath Kidston and the like). My niche is multiple and wide, but people love matching and complementing things in life, so it'll work better than just selling soap, which is a generally low-profit business for most.

I don't disagree, but you need to understand your market first; whether it is national, regional or local market. Once you do that, then you can decide upon a niche and/or gimmick if you will, that will make your product stand out. Katie Carson is well known for the 'royal court' and her High Top soaps. You have The Soap Gal who is doing very well in private label manufacturing. And you have Dr Squatch aka Jack Haldrup who suffers from psoriasis and decided that men needed better options, but weren't the kind to shop Farmer's Markets and 'boutique' store. If helped hugely off course, that he had the bucks to hire a marketing firm.

That's awesome! I am a big advocate for donating. I started a Free Store almost 9 years ago. One of my projects this year is hygeine kits for our homeless population. That is why I am learning to make soap. One of my volunteers makes soaps and gave me the idea. So we are both going to make smaller bars for their kits. We are a not-for-profit and not a charity so can't claim it on our taxes but that's not a deterrent. There are so many ways to help, I absolutely love this! Wish me luck, my first batch is ready the end of July. I made 3 more batches. It's certainly been a learning experience!
