QLD Abandoned Mines
Австралия
Добавлен 9 апр 2014
Researching and documenting a handful of the 15,000+ abandoned mines in SE QLD, Australia.
We research and explore abandoned historical mine workings in pursuit of the amazing historical story the mine workings and miners quite often left behind.
QAM is trained in climbing/rigging and working within confined spaces. We do not endorse or encourage anyone to enter abandoned mine workings. This can be potentially life threatening for untrained and inexperienced explorers. Accessing workings on private land without permission from land owners could constitute tresspass.

TERRIFYING ABANDONED MINE. THE FINAL EPISODE
PART 3.
Welcome back to the channel, explorers! In today's adventure, we’re taking you deep into one of the most massive abandoned tungsten mines we've ever explored, just south of Gympie QLD during a "100 year cold snap". But before we go any further, we need to stress the importance of safety-this mine is extremely dangerous, with unstable ground, hidden shafts, and risky structures everywhere. Please, **do not attempt to explore places like this on your own**. We’re trained, and we always take the proper precautions. Exploring workings like this requires very specif...

This monster Wolfram mine played a pivotal role in the development of Australian mineral exports and production. Tin oxides were first found by prospectors at this site in 1881. Ground was broken and mining commenced in 1889. It was worked until pre- WW1 and then closed. An acquisition took place in the 1950s and that saw production resume in the late 1950s and spanned until the late 1970s. The...

We braved extreme jungle and cross two rivers inhabited by crocodiles to access the mountainous jungle that has almost reclaimed this long-lost QLD tropical location. Great scenery and vid.
@@markkilley2683 Thanks mate. Beautiful part of QLD!
Azurite is beautiful. I would like to find that amount.
Good Lord that was more than just a little sketchy! Excellent series here, thanks for letting us see it and happy new year!!!
Thanks mate! It was definitely something a bit different.
Remote rural NSW here opal miner and that was one widow maker of a mine indeed you knew when 2 call it.
We definitely could have kept crawling through. Chris even tested the collapsed timbers by climbing on top of them. IMHO we just needed more positive thinking 🍺 Ebenezer won't admit it, but he loves worming through collapses. It's his natural element.
In the US a lot of gold mines "became" Tungsten mines so they could keep mining during the war.
Excellent videos. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
@@wayneiona Thanks Wayne. Have a great 2025 and thanks for following our adventures. QAM.
G-day Eb, Chris Buck and John... Epic muddy mess of a mine... Thank you for all of the effort needed to film and bring it to us... SKETCHY ! but cool. ... Good on you for this explore... Best wishes on the New Year, take care and stay safe, till the next. ... cheers 🥂

G’day Eb, how are you this New Year 2025. Happy New Year to Buck, John and Chris too.
G'day mate! Pretty bloody exhausted to be honest. Relentless year with work, exploring & home improvements. I hope you have had a tremendous New Year's, mate, and all the best for 2025.
@@qldabandonedmines I did have a really good New Year thanks mate. 2025 promises to be a good year for me. I start a part time job at a school looking after their safety on January 15. Only 42 weeks a year. That'll be hard to take after working in jobs where I worked up to 90 - 96 hours a week. It's good to be able to slow down.
@@detecting_Nathanael you have earned it. Save a couple of your winter weeks leave as we may be going on some Tin adventures down New England way
@@qldabandonedmines Sounds good to me.
We went here on Monday and that was my 3rd trip to the smelter sites. My son was asking a lot of questions about the mine and your video answered a lot, it was very informative. Thanks a lot!
Smelt and melt are totally different
Excellent journey. Thank you.
@@wayneiona Thankyou and Merry Xmas! Hopefully you can join us in two weeks for the final episode.
yeah them timbers toward the end of the video are next level scary,
@@andrewbarker9773 indeed. The water is flooding up from the levels below, up and out of the main shaft. As it's so far underground, the water is creating a positive-pressure invironment. If the water recedes and the mine was to dry out, the workings would all fail we would say.
@@qldabandonedminesnot true - Chris (lead explorer) advised that it was perfectly safe. The timbers get stronger as they metamorphose over time. Similar to dinosaur skeletons - a well studied area of science 💎
Very interesting history. Terrifying beautiful mine.
@@markkilley2683 Cheers mate. Glad you enjoyed our mission. Terrifyingly Beautiful was going to be the original title for this series! Haha. We didn't think anyone would get it!

Thanks Kev and Merry Xmas mate! Final episode of this big one up in the next fortnight. From Eb & The Gang.
G'day Eb, you'd have to be vary sure of your way with all of the drives and shafts around in there. And that growth on the timbers looked a bit like the wiring used in blasting with non el detonators, but a bit too thin. That place would really give me the heebies!
Absolutely my friend. Bad vibes.. but glad we got to see what was in the mountain. We were on level 4 of 9. What I would pay to see the lower workings. The relics down there would be phenomenal. Merry Xmas mate and see you once it cools down for a mission! Eb.
@@qldabandonedmines Hi Eb, happy Christmas to you and your family too. Also to Buck, John & Chris. Maybe the mission could be considered for school holidays? I have just accepted a part time safety job at a school. 42 weeks a year and five mornings a week. If we can swing the school holidays, that would work really well.
Wow, that stuff growing out of the timber was creepy as ...
Yes that was a first for us. I am certain some things we find would be very unique species as these environments, the dark and the mineral sediments would create some bizzare lifeforms. If it puzzled John, then it most certainly is a rare find. I am pretty sure it was listening to us 😂😂😂 Eb. QAM.

Hey :) You made a really great video. I like that. I am going to lost places and explore them too. Can we get in contact with esch other please ? :)
Remote rural off grid NSW here opal miner, luv abandoned mines thanks for taking me along. For those that wish 2 explore abandoned mines unless you have experience the right equipment and knowledge they can be a rabbit hole you will not surface from , abandoned miner no matter how shallow stay out stay safe, never truer words spoken . Am a first responder here SES mine rescue and vertical rescue tech and RCR ,unfortunately sometimes mine rescues turn out to be body retrievals and not just miners . These are only my thoughts experiences and in no way represent the organisation in any way shape or form, had 2 add that good people. But i digress great upload indeed.
@@TheSilmarillian thanks bud and I've pinned this comment for all to read as we agree on all of it. We hit bad 02 in two zones of this mine that without bump tested and calibrated 4 gas metres, could have led to a situation miles from the portal. I see countless people cruising through old workings in various places online, stating they will "see if they get dizzy" and retreat or "smell the bad air" and that's not the way bad atmospheres work, as you would well know. Stay out and there is no risk. Eb & the QAM crew
@@qldabandonedmines Yep and to add - the bad air is rarely where we would have expected it to be. Stay out, stay alive.
Mate there are two horizontal shafts on the other side of the road that goes up to camp Mountain picnic area, northern side.
We never found them. Spent hours looking them and that was the start of our dehydration. Those hills are no joke. I have no idea why we executed this mission in the peak of summer.
Stumbled upon the channel by accident. Really nice content. I'm a research geologist at an Australian University and what I will say is that these old abandoned mines and workings (along with the waste dumps) are absolute god sends for our work in targeting critical metals. While most of the visible ore is long gone, all the waste piles usually have sufficient whole rock and mineral samples (Cassiterite, Tantalite, Muscovite, Apatite, Zircon etc.) for our research purposes. Namely understanding how the deposits formed and if we can use that data to develop targeting exploration parameters for finding similar deposits in the region. I literally just got back from sampling a whole bunch of abandoned pegmatite workings in the Northern Territory, and I know what you mean when you turn up to some of these mines and you just get overwhelming feelings of discomfort and concern.
Thanks Ledge. Add me on insta and I can kick you some shots of the old mill and tails sights from this one. As well as the city sized dump piles. They are a sensational sight. We kept it out of the edit to keep the location obscured. This beast has had major issues with subsidence up topside in the 1990s. The giant stope chambers in level 1 up near the surface started to give way.
Any particular reason it took so long to release the video?
@@MrRj7926 Hey bud. It was over 4 hours of footage that in total took 10 months to finish editing, as other explorations were easier to produce. There was also two audio channels and 2 b-roll cameras to synch & edit together. This one was an enormous chore to edit down to an hour.
@qldabandonedmines fair enough mate, I was just curious is all.
Shocking all the mud , makes me wonder where it all came from ,cheers
@@35andsolid The frothy part was really nasty. I kept thinking a mine monster was going to grab my leg when we walked through that part. The mud is the sediment that settles everytime the mine floods over the last 50 years. The red would mean it's high in iron and that precipitates out of the waters leaving a thick sludge. It ruins your clothing permanently and stains your feet for weeks if your not wearing waders.
@@qldabandonedmines Yes I have seen the the mud in some of the mines where I live ,I always thought it was rust , cheers
thiobacillus ferroxidans
@johncarter3521 it's Hydrozicide mate!
I'm sure youve heard the rumours of large military cache from ww2 hidden in old mines around Gympie. Similar to the rumours of spitfire parts around Oakey, but the Gympie mines supposedly contain mostly American artillery and transport equipment including willies jeeps etc. Maybe one day there'll be some hard evidence, but the folklore is fun!
GED mined the Gympie Monkland reef via a huge decline (The Lewis) in the 2000s, so if there was a cache, it would have to be moved a very long way away from that area mate. They were blasting truck sized helix's down, so any munitions would have been cleared out. BHP pumped the Gympie workings dry in the 1990s too, so if it's down there they would have had to remove it all to operate.
Have really enjoyed the series . Cheers

Thankyou RJ. Two more episodes of this old beast over the next few weeks. We get very deep underground!

Ive spent a lot of time exploring this area. If you ever come back, i can show you lots of workings that arent documented on any maps or literature.
The mountain kicked our arses bad on this mission. I felt it was telling us not to return 😂😂 If we ever head back, I'll hit you up mate. Thankyou find the kind offer. Eb. QAM.
@qldabandonedmines trust me I know that feeling. The first time I went up to that mine with a mate we run out of water on the way there so it was a bad experience. I didn't go back up there for almost a year because it was traumatic haha my cardiovascular capacity is pretty good now because I go up there solo hiking every week. I hit the spurs on the northern side last week! It was alot more difficult 😂
@jarroddeeth567 after this hike we had to pull the car over urgently outside of town as two of us were very ill. We were rolling on the grass spewing up pretty bad. It was quite the scene. The passing motorists looked quite concerned. Brophy didn't come good for several days afterwards. 😂😂😂
