Rob - the manual is very clear. Under 'a note of caution', on page 18, those new to 5BX are instructed to begin at chart 1, D minus level. One's age determines how long one remains at the level before advancing (see paragraph just before 'a note of caution').

On page 18 under a note of caution it states to start at the bottom of chart one and work up from level to level as recommended. On page 19 under how to progress it states to start at the lowest physical capacity level of chart 1D -. Also on page 19 in the image it says chart one progress through all steps of this chart before moving up to chart 2 and has lines drawn over to every set of steps on the chart
