Filming on Super8 for the first time - analog film
So, I got myself a Super8 camera and I wanted to share all my thoughts and what I learned taking my first steps in this new field with you. Maybe I'll even find a way to include it in my videos about the fashion industry. It'll definetely find it's way into my vlogs and more casual travel stuff.

Why dress sizes never fit the same - the problem with vanity sizing in fashion

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 3 дня назад

      It's not much of a visible difference, imo. The hole is about the same Size and the differences in Sound are achieved though marginal changes in the curvature, if I remember my research correctly. If you consider buying them, just be warned, that they only cap off high frequencies. If you are looking for something to block out noise while travelling f.ex. you may be better off choosing a different solution. Hope this helps and thank you for watching :)

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret 3 дня назад

      @@atailorsblog Thanks. But still think it woudl be interesting to see the differences. I'm afraid the the regular Calmer doesn't quite fit the bill. I'm currently researching different earplugs for different situations. I have Loop Switch (1st gen) and Loop Engage. Got the switch first but found that even the lowest setting is too much for many situations. Engage is much better but still might be a little too much in some situations. On the other hand I think Calmer is on the opposite end of the scale - too little. Have thought of just having real musician earplugs made with replaceable accoustic filters so you can experiment with which works in different situations. They're not exactly cheap though.

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 2 дня назад

      @HifiCentret sure, I understand that showing that would have answered more of my viewers questions. I can assure you, that you would not have noticed a difference. The Calmers are definitely very light and have a somewhat limited use range. I still haven't got my own hypersensitivity treatment down to a T, but you may have to find different solutions for different situations. Sadly, I haven't gotten the Loop Earplugs myself yet, so I cannot give you a comparison. The Calmers are good with AC and Machinery when you still need to be able to have conversations.

    Vanity sizing is STUPID it makes finding clothing difficult. Because your forced to go and try on every single piece of clothing. If you don’t then your risk buying stuff that’s to small. Your not gonna take it back your just gonna let it sit in the dresser or hang in the closet and hope it fits you one day. Such a STUPID thing the industry is doing now

    Hi Tailor, how do you do when for example, there is a high impact sound like glass plates colliding? or someone's sudden scream? I have hyperacusis and tinnitus. Using full-blocking earplugs is uncomfortable, especially because I hear tinnitus and because I don't hear when people talk to me.

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 8 месяцев назад

      Hello! I'm sorry to hear that. I cannot imagine what Tinnitus feels like. I don't think the Calmer earplugs are right for that. They only lessen certain frequencys and I don't think they'll offer sufficient protection to you. Perhaps noise blocking 'festival' or 'concentration' earplugs could help? There are some which still allow for normal conversation yet block enough to 'dampen' harsh sounds. I think there's still space for technological Innovation as well, but I cannot recommend any headphones at this point. I have Sony one's that have a conversation mode they switch to if you start to speak but it also goes off when I blow my nose and that can be quite jarring. I hope you find some relief and I wish you all the best 🤗

    Thank you for putting this information out there. I worked in retail back in the early 90s and vanity sizes were just coming out. I worked in the junior department and could wear a lot of the clothes that were on the lower end of the scale. As vanity sizes became the norm, my size was pushed out and I couldn't wear anything in that department anymore. Now I have to either buy stuff out of the Petite (I'm 5'2) or Misses departments and have it tailored to fit; or shop in the Little Girl's department. I miss the days when ready to wear clothes were based on waist size.

    I just got a 1014 AZ-E and I’m still trying to figure it out. You see many videos on the 1014 XL-S model, but not much on the earlier silent model. Have you tried to do any fades or wipes or superimpose or anything like that? Did yours come with a timer thing for doing Timelapse? Fun fact about Canons is you can find out what year your camera was made on the door when you open the film compartment and it has a date code stamped. The first letter is the year when it was produced, mine having an “O” means my camera was made in 1974.

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 2 года назад

      Thank you so much for your comments. I'm sorry I didn't receive the notification on time. I personally saw many videos of the 814 (lower Zoom factor) as well. When I bought mine from a retired photographer his dad started talking about the camera and they told me that all their friends had bought it because to them it was the best. Sometimes I check his retail site and he regularely lists 1014s for sale so they really must be that great. I must confess, I temporarly stopped filming Super8 shortly after that video because I moved and wanted to save up for a Sony Full Format camera, which I've just bought. Online you can find the original manual. It is very helpful. I tried to do some fades but they didn't work out as intended, so I have some reading to do. The good old millenial way of just pressing buttons really doesn't work with older equipment. I also have a Leica R8 and I was so terribly clueless :D. As for superimposing. I would not know how to go about it with this particular camera. I bought an Elmo 103 t without the super imposer device (someone sold it for 20€), so I roughly understand the method but I don't know how I'd apply it to the Canon. I know I could also film white titles on black background, rewind and then film the scenery. That I have not tried yet. I'd love to hear your thoughts and plans on superimposing. Have you gotten the Ektachrome Footage back already? I shot most on 50D, but think I should have gone for 200T more often.

      @@atailorsblog I did shoot the Ektachome footage but still haven’t sent it in. I’m currently saving up for a Bolex H16 REX 3-5 model 16mm camera. And this is a pretty pricy camera that will take me a couple months to save for. So the next footage I’m sending in is some footage I made on a Bell and Howell 16mm camera (then the super 8 ektachome). I don’t know when I’m going to film with the 1014 and try all those effects honestly.

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 2 года назад

      I am happy I didn't wait any longer to send it in because I learned a lot from reviewing my material, so if it's not too outrageously expensive to send some tapes already, I would do it. I love the look of 16mm film, it's actually my favourite, but I'll keep to my super8 and digital cameras for now, to learn. Several years down the line, I'd be curious to maybe rent 16mm cinema cameras. I would love to take the 1014 with me on my travels but I'm scared of using it in less... middle-european countries. It does turn a few heads among security personnel and the police because it looks quite threatening and I don't want to find out if people are as chill elsewhere. I still have some half-finished tapes lying around for which I didn't mark the point at which I took them out and I'll put them into my ELMO and film a timer to check if it's lagging or not. The elmo would make for a good travel companion. Or I'll just go with native speakers and have them talk to Security about me being an art student.

      No. From my experience, this is not the case. It is more for high pitched background noise such as loud refrigerators, computers or in my case certain sewing machines. I was interested in the normal Calmer for making life more pleasant during the day, since I produce music and hurt my ears a lot when boosting the volume for long periods. No, it doesn't work for my misophonia. I bought them because the website said that it's helpful when you have autisme, misophonia. I have both and also tinnitus. I don't like the earplugs at all.

      Thank you for sharing your experience! They do seem to have a slightly smaller area of use than the manufacturer would like to admit.

    hello! Could you still hear other people and have comfortable conversations with both plugs? been thinking about getting the night ones but i'm scared conversations wont be easy :( Thank you very much!!

      You can still definetely hear others but your understanding may be limited in certain scenarios. As I mentioned, I believe that some of the higher frequencies the Calmer reduces could have helped me understand people a lot better in noisy environments. If you do not usually struggle with conversations you won't notice too negative an effect, and that will be limited to when there's background noise. I want to point out again, that I found the Calmer Night slightly dizzying, so keep that in mind when making your decision. Wishing you all the best :)

    Is this bag waterproof? It seems that the rain could wet items at the ends of the zipper where the cover does not cover the ends of the zipper.

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 3 года назад

      By design it's technically possible for water to enter the bag through the gaps you spotted. I never had problems with that and I never feared damage to my belongings. It's definetely worth considering if you are biking or walking in areas of heavy rain. But then an upper-price range leather bag with the weight distribution issues I mentioned may not be the right thing for you, regardless of those gaps.

      @@atailorsblog Thank you! I just love leather bags and live in a very rainy country... Cannot find a win-win solution, can't I?!

      @@signealvarez7457 i mean, out of all leather that I own, I would trust the pebbled type of my bag most when it comes to water. The main problems with leather getting wet are stiffness/dryness, water stains and smell. So make sure to read up on waterproofing leather, always leave it to dry fully at room temperature!!! (I once fell asleep with my peccary gloves in the boiler room and I thought I had ruined them - they were like paper) and then really go for sth sturdier and make it a habit to carry an umbrella or poncho with you. I'm sorry, I don't yet have the experience to recommend specific types of leather or products, so please let me know when you find sth that works for you :)

      I had soaked my maestra bag in water and surprisingly it did not get ruined. Still looks good as new. So I say this bag is really quality.

      Happy to hear! I think when it comes to wetting leather the main goals are to avoid it becoming too dry, avoid water stains and too keep its shape. When washing leather gloves I add glycerin to the water and use very little detergent. My shoes I treat with wax or special water proofing to avoid staining. I did get a bit of staining on my ice scates where the blade is attached to the sole, so maybe cutting edges are more vulnerable to it. Always dry leather products slowly, away from any heat. Drying it in a hot spot will give it paper-like texture. I tried that one for you... Edit: or maybe don't soak them next time lmao :D

    Whilst this bag is beautifully made and well structured, I find it too heavy. I wished the straps are wider for a more comfortable wear

    i have a question. what size did you chose? i saw that there's a standard size and a mini size and i don't know which one to choose. this video was very helpful too! thank you!

      I'm happy my video helped you. :) I chose standard size based off the assumption that my ears are average more than anything else. I would however factor in how in-ear headphones fit you, your general head and ear size. They do have a money-back guarantee but keep in mind that they are in the UK which has now finalised Brexit. I hope youtube lets me post this link to their return page: flareaudio.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/43000491571-flare-audio-returns-refund-policy I hope you find the right size for you :)

    I actually put extra DRings on the sides of the bag- now I can carry it comfortably on my shoulder. Its too big to carry across and I feel a bit to old carrying it like a backpack.

    • @atailorsblog
      @atailorsblog 3 года назад

      For me the selling point was the backpack straps and the compartments. I did briefly consider modifying the bag but I really enjoy the backpack style and with other brands offering that as well I just wanted to keep the re-sell value high. So far I have not yet chosen a different bag but it's not off the table with the weight distribution issues being the only reason. As for the latter - sometimes when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, wearing my long trench, the backpack and head tilted back because my glasses slid down, I do look a little like two small Clarissas trying to get into the cinema on one ticket. But I'm cute. And it's better for my neck, so..
