Wondering About Nature
США
Добавлен 1 авг 2022
If you want to learn about the natural world, this is the channel for you! A little about me: I'm a retired environmental educator and still love sharing what I learn. Join me as I uncover the mysteries of wildlife and wild lands. I’m located in Coastal Delaware, but many of the plants and animals around me can be found in other locations, too. Plus, I'll share videos taken in other locations I visit. I'll also share tips and tricks to help you as you explore. All videos and photos were taken by me unless noted. Since Mother Nature is in charge outside, I usually don't plan my video topics! And sometimes I end up creating a short video due to wildlife being spontaneous. Whether in your own backyard or while visiting a natural area, what are you wondering about nature today?

Is This Goose Calling or Just Blowing Off Steam?

Thanks for checking out the description section. The visible fog you see when geese honk in cold weather is caused by the warm, moist air from their breath meeting the cold, dry air outside. Here’s how it works: 1. Warm Breath Meets Cold Air : Just like humans, geese exhale air that's warmer and contains moisture (water vapor) from their respiratory system. 2. Condensation Happens : When this w...

The Winter Benefits of Winged Sumac You Didn’t Know

I love watching wildlife take advantage of Winged Sumac throughout the seasons. In this video you'll learn how important this plant is during the cold, winter months. Did you know??? The fruit (drupes) can be eaten and are reported to produce a nice lemony drink when added to water. Most recipes call for cold water. Oil from the seed can be extracted to make candles. Seeds have also been used t...

Epic Pileated Woodpeckers Pecking: Nature's Logging Expert at Work #4K #highdefinition
Просмотров 26021 день назад
Talk about teamwork! The male Pileated Woodpecker begins excavating then nest cavity and does most of the work, but the female contributes, particularly as the hole nears completion. The entrance hole is oblong rather than the circular shape of most woodpecker holes. For the finishing touches, the bird climbs all the way into the hole and chips away at it from the inside. Periodically the adult...

Do you have a favorite reptile or amphibian shown in this video? Be sure to let me know. Thanks for watching.
Do you have a favorite bird shown in this video? Be sure to let me know. I'm also interested to know if you enjoy watching videos like this with no background music. Or do you prefer a soundtrack? Thanks for your input. It's truly appreciated.
The painted turtle laying the egg was so neat to see.
I was so thrilled to walk up on it. It was on the path leading to Fleetwood Pond. She was so careful to cover them up before returning to the water.
Great footage. It was neat to see it dig so deep into the snow.
It was back again on Tuesday. I usually have four that visit my feeding area, but I've just seen one over the past few days. They are so comical. When it was sitting on the fence, it reminded me of one of those old-time caps from Daniel Boone. I'm glad you're enjoying the snow, too! We ended up with a little over 9 inches. Have a great day.
Good camera. Irritating music.
@@rowanholgate1435 thanks for watching. I selected that soundtrack since it fit the action of the squirrel. Very action-packed. Sorry it wasn't to your liking.
Great information as always, glad it is now official 👍 Amazing video 💕
@@Cobaltdragon thanks, Elaine. I'm so glad they have recovered and are no longer endangered. I could look it up online, but I'll ask you here. Do you have a national bird in Canada?
We get swarms in my area, but not that large, about 100 or so. Very noisy and the hawks do avoid them. Glad they don’t bother my feeders with my setup so the other birds don’t get bothered. I used to make my own suet for the woodpecker and others but the starlings became a nuisance and the other birds didn’t get to enjoy so I stopped putting it out.
@@Cobaltdragon It's always amazing to see such large groups of any bird. I know what you mean about the Starlings! I have a few suet feeders and one has a cage around it so Starlings can't access it easily. It's fun watching the smaller birds like the Downy Woodpeckers go in and eat unbothered.🥰
Bunch of cute birds! That’s quite the variety and so clearly captured!
Thanks. I've been trying to shoot everything in videos no matter what they are doing just so I can see them in action. My tripod has definitely been a great investment! I love the winter when many of the trees are bare so we can see wildlife easier. Have a great day!
What a great day to see so many birds! I was at the John Heinz Wildlife refuge today and saw a kingfisher there.
It's great when the sun is hitting them just right, but even when there was fog over the pond, it was fun seeing the geese. I haven't been to John Heinz in over 20 years, and at that time it was for training, so I didn't really explore as much as I would now. It's on my list of places to visit after I get settled in after my move to Lancaster in the spring. Kingfishers are so cool to spy on especially since they are so skittish. I usually hear them before seeing them!
Beautiful footage of the bald eagles
Thanks! There have been so many in the past few years. I love seeing them at various ages when their plumage is different from the adults.
I thought the Bald Eagle was designated our national bird years ago. Thanks for capturing videos of these majestic birds.
@@MakeMineMack I know! Me, too. I remember when DDT was banned due to the negative issues it caused for wildlife. So glad these birds have recovered. Thanks for visiting my channel. 🥰
Thank you so much! Beautiful back yard!
So glad you enjoyed it. I'm thrilled that my friend invited me to visit. Looking forward to going back in the spring. Have a great day.
Such great footage
Thanks! I was glad it was happening right in front of me while I was in my car. It was a cold day.
And hello to it being the year of 2009 which was an interesting one for me! 👍🏻
Thanks for stopping by and watching. I hope 2025 is a good year for you, too!
The pounce looks so cute and playful! Why so fluffy and adorable but not want belly rubs? 😂
I know, right? Definitely would seem to be a snuggler, but of course, being a wild animal, I know not to ask it to get in the car so I could rub the belly! I've been known to talk to a resident Northern Mockingbird along a trail, and have put out my finger as if it would come and land on it.
Oh wow!! We’ve gotten huge flocks a time or two over the years but nothing like this!
It was crazy! I thought I was watching one of those old-time videos where they would loop a bunch of people walking but you realized it was the same people over and over again! LOL. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for visiting.
Nice video. I'm in constant wonder of nature. Rock on lady!
So glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comment.
I enjoyed that and I have definitely seen the winged sumac on some of my hikes in Delaware.
The dried fruit definitely stands out in the winter. Glad you enjoyed the video.
why he banned he so cute maine
@@naitmer7956 they have a band around them. That's how they get their name. They can cause irritation to the skin if handled.
Great video. Seeds definitely spread as birds feed.
Hi Elaine! Glad you enjoyed the video. I love the fall and winter when you can really see the birds enjoying those "gumballs" as they are hanging on the trees. They can create an issue with hiking when they fall on hard trails since they are almost like balls. Take care.
@@Wondering_About_Nature much like I enjoy seeing the gold finches and chickadees on the scotch thistle. So cute and of course the seeds go everywhere, which means new plants the following year.
@@Cobaltdragon I rarely get Goldfinch in my yard, but the House Finch are cute. Right now the Dark-eyed Juncos are enjoying the seeds in the ground. I haven't had any unusual birds this season yet.
@@Wondering_About_Nature I rarely get to see the House Finch few glimpses over the summer but they are not regulars. We have Juncos now as well, they will travel when the weather gets warmer in the spring.
Lovely 🥰
I'm going to miss not seeing the coastal sunrises when I move, but I'm sure I'll find some new vistas to capture it. Glad you liked the video.
@@Wondering_About_Nature no doubt, but you will soon find many other special places I have no doubt and looking forward to seeing them on your channel.
Lovely thank you for sharing. My yard has over 10 different species that travel through, love the variety.
Ten is a good number! I love your yard and how much you care for it. I hope to do some videos of my new backyard once I get settled in come spring. Although it's quite small, there are many native plants and a small man-made creek which attracts a variety of birds. Enjoy your day!
@@Wondering_About_Nature thank you. Designed for nature fur, feather and insect. My happy place and theirs
That's a beautiful backyard and that's amazing to see so many birds in such a short time. I really need to add a water source to my backyard.
I'm anxious to return in the late spring. He gets so many critters besides birds. I have bird baths in my yard, but when it gets below freezing, I have to turn them upside down to get the ice out. I'm not able to connect a heater to them.
Salutations a tous! C'est tres beau!! Bravo a renard!! Elle etait heureuse et,, travaille plus beaucoup 😀👍👍👍🦊😘😘🎉🎉🎉
Glad you enjoyed the video!
This is stunning!!
I like to add a tree or other vegetation in the view sometimes to mix it up. Thanks for the comment. Can't wait to check out more of your videos!
I always enjoy seeing a sunrise.
The colors are so beautiful many times. I love the sunrise each time it's visible, but sometimes it's just the plain old sun! :)
Hello Im new to your channel came over from @hikingoutdoorfamily. This little ones are so cute. Love the ice skater.
Hi! Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you enjoyed the little ice skater. They sure do adjust to all sorts of weather conditions. Have a great day.
very beautiful and interesting. I really enjoyed this stunning video.
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Most times my sunrises are along the coast with the wetlands or ocean as the backdrop, but this particular morning, I wanted to change things up a bit. Have a great day.
That was cute to see the birds try to navigate the ice.
Those smaller birds with perching feet seem to do better than the ducks with their webbed feet! I've seen ducks and geese on ice sliding a bit more probably due to the surface of their feet being larger. On Thursday, all of the ice was gone again, and there was more water in Fleetwood Pond and along the path with all the rain we got.
butterflys are scary, they can't fly right XD ttey just flap and appear in an area like "yes...this is where I am now"
@@BookWyrm1060 especially if they get caught in a breeze.
Love the information... We have a critically endangered butterfly in our area of Michigan... The Poweshiek Skipperling... Only a few hundred remain but a lot of effort is going into trying to save this little guy... 😊
@@riversandcoffee wow. I'm going to look that one up. Always love learning about new species. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🥰
Awesome... Love it 😊 Thanks ✌️
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love just standing off to the side watching the birds feasting on the seeds. Some are so cute when they hang upside down.
That was beautiful footage. It surprised me to see how tiny the rodent it caught was. Also, really interesting that it hid it for later.
I had never known they do this until I researched it after watching the fox. It was digging for over five minutes before it found something! It was nice to be sitting in my car while it was busy with its morning. Not sure if you're ever driven down Oyster Rocks Road, but this is at the end of that road. Except for really cold days, there is usually something going on in the early morning hours. It's near Hudson Fields along Route 1.
@Wondering_About_Nature Thanks, I've never driven down there before so I will have to check it out.
I love how loud they are.
Me, too. Although I see them each year, when the first ones arrive, it's like I'm seeing (and hearing) them for the first time. Thanks for stopping by!
Gorgeous!! 🌅❤️🥰
Glad you enjoyed it. It's been fun putting a sunrise video together for each Sunday. Thanks for the comment.
Beautiful.
I love when there are a few clouds on the horizon at sunrise since it makes it a bit more dramatic. Thanks for the comment.
@@Wondering_About_Nature Thank you so much for joining as a member. I really appreciate that! I'll have a shoutout for your channel in in my Bombay hook video that goes up tomorrow at 3pm.
@@hikingoutdoorfamily You're channel is so informative and enjoyable. I look forward to looking over your past content and your new stuff, too! You're so welcome.
They are beautiful trees aren't they the leaves are so wonderful in the fall. Sweet gum balls, not so great to step on barefoot however. Thanks for the video
I love how the birds can hang on them and pick the seeds from the gum balls. Since most of the leaves have fallen, it's much easier to see the birds and their acrobatic moves. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comment.
Nice and so beautiful video. Thanks for sharing & like no. 4
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. These birds are so plentiful right now and are so busy moving from tree to tree. They also can be seen chasing each other creating flashes of yellow sometimes right in front of my head! Thanks for the comment.
Beautiful footage and I learned something new.
Thanks. I've never seen one alive before, so it was a real treat. I was glad to see it escape the tidal pool. If you're ever in the area of Fowler Beach, it's definitely worth checking out. Low tide is best. Thanks for watching.
@Wondering_About_Nature Thanks, I've only been to Fowler beach once, but this was a good reminder to go visit again sometime.

I'm so glad you enjoy watching them! Thank you for reaching out and leaving a comment. Have a great day.
Do you have a favorite warbler? While I enjoy seeing so many Yellow-rumped Warblers, there are so many others that I enjoy seeing. Some are so colorful, while one of my favorites is the Black-and-white Warbler.
Beautiful birds. Thanks for sharing, Cindy. Great footage. Best wishes for tomorrow. Kind regards, Knut.
Thank, Knut. There are so many around right now as they get ready for mating season which is earlier than many other birds in our area. I love hearing them call out to each other. Happy Thursday!
Hi there, just discovered your channel. That was really neat to see all the footage of the eagles and seeing them in the old Osprey nest.
Good morning. I'm so glad you found my channel and enjoyed the video. I hope you find other enjoyable videos in my playlists. I am anxious to check out your videos since we seem to visit many of the same places. I, too, enjoy hiking and will be moving to Lancaster County, PA in the spring. It will be great to explore new areas after I get settled but still be close enough to the Delaware coast to return for visits. Have a great day.
Awesome. Being a nightowl I am more sunset. But I very much enjoyed as I didn’t have to wake up early to enjoy 😊😉
I used to take my walks in the evening and catch the sunsets, but over the past few years, my body has decided to be an early-riser and walk early. With the sun setting earlier now, I might get out and catch some sunsets soon.
Wow very interesting.💕
My sister and I were walking on the boardwalk trail and heard the sound of hooves ahead. We decided it was best to keep our distance and walk away after taking some video and photos. When we returned to the trail later, the horses had moved off into the marsh.
Mallards are the only ones in my area. Nice to see others, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it. Mallards can be so commonplace in many areas, but they are so pretty. Have a great day!
