Wondering About Nature
США
Добавлен 1 авг 2022
If you want to learn about the natural world, this is the channel for you! A little about me: I'm a retired environmental educator and still love sharing what I learn. Join me as I uncover the mysteries of wildlife and wild lands. I’m located in Coastal Delaware, but many of the plants and animals around me can be found in other locations, too. Plus, I'll share videos taken in other locations I visit. I'll also share tips and tricks to help you as you explore. All videos and photos were taken by me unless noted. Since Mother Nature is in charge outside, I usually don't plan my video topics! And sometimes I end up creating a short video due to wildlife being spontaneous. Whether in your own backyard or while visiting a natural area, what are you wondering about nature today?

First Visit: Viewing the Beauty of Nature at Climbers Run Preserve in Lancaster County, PA
Enjoy the beauty of birds and the tranquility of flowing waters in this video taken at Climbers Run Preserve. My first visit to this property was short, but I was thrilled to see their bird- feeding station being used by so many species! One of the trails is along Climbers Run which is a beautiful stream with many rocks creating small waterfalls. Watch to the end to hear how peaceful it is at this location! High-Speed Chase: Sharp-Shinned Hawk vs. Blue Jay
Просмотров 357 часов назад
While enjoying the solitude of Fleetwood Pond at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Milton, Delaware with many Great Blue Herons patiently waiting for a fish to eat, I was startled by a Blue Jay calling out loudly. As I turned to look in the direction of the call, I saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk in hot pursuit of the Blue Jay. I hope you enjoy watching this video as you learn about some of the r...
Forest Phantoms: The Mysterious Brown Creeper
Просмотров 6916 часов назад
It’s Halloween, so I thought it appropriate to show you a fascinating bird I encountered recently at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware. Although many birds can be heard before being seen, this one rarely calls out. It takes patience and a sharp eye to see one in action. The brown creeper is quite small, measuring about 5 inches (12-13 cm) in length with a wingspan of about 7-8 inches ...
Feeding Time for Golden-Crowned Kinglets: A Delicate Dance

If you subscribe to my channel, you might remember watching a few videos featuring the Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Today I was treated to seeing a group of Golden-crowned Kinglets while at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware. These tiny birds are not only beautiful, but fun to watch as they seem to dance from branch to branch. One of the smallest songbirds in North America, golden-crowned kin...
Nature’s Vanishing Act: Screech Owl’s Incredible Camouflage #4k

This Eastern Screech Owl has been living in tree cavity at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Milton, Delaware for many years. Eastern screech owls are small, nocturnal owls native to eastern North America and southeastern Canada. They are compact owls, about 6-10 inches tall with a wingspan of 18-24 inches. These owls come in two color morphs-gray and rufous (reddish-brown). Both color mor...

Seaside Sparrow vs. White-throated Sparrow: Which Is Which?
Просмотров 5414 дней назад
The White-throated Sparrows have returned to my area of Coastal Delaware. I enjoy hearing their beautiful call almost as much as I enjoy seeing their beautiful head plumage. I also enjoy seeing the Seaside Sparrow year-round. At first glance, these two can be confused, but there are some differences that help tell them apart. I hope you enjoy learning about them in this video. Here is some addi...
Osprey’s Victory Perch: Savoring an Atlantic Needlefish #4K
Просмотров 4221 день назад
(Sorry for the unsteady footage-I forgot my tripod!) Although the Ospreys have normally migrated south by now, many are still being seen along the Delaware coast. I watched a family of four at Burton’s Island Preserve recently. One flew to a treetop with what appears to be an Atlantic Needlefish! Watch as it eats the fish and learn about the Osprey. Usually the male Osprey shares its catch with...
Kinglets on the Wing: A Ruby-Crowned Dance #4K
Просмотров 1821 день назад
I recently shared a video of a Ruby-crowned Kinglet feeding right next to a trail. I was thrilled to see a few others at a different location today. They were very busy flittering around, only landing occasionally to rest. This video will give you an idea of why they can sometimes be difficult to photograph. Be sure to watch the related video if you haven’t already seen it. Here is more informa...

Saltmarsh Snack: Laughing Gull Devours a Crab
what[smthe strange sound???
@@marydelvecchio4807 That's one of the calls of the Eastern Screech Owl. It's very eerie when heard in person.
Very nice! So restful!
@@debraaument1741 thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
So beautiful 😍
I can't wait to return when the sun is shining! Cloudy mornings can be a challenge to see wildlife clearly. Glad you enjoyed it.
They are beautiful birds. Thank you for sharing. Beautiful footage. Best wishes for tomorrow. Regards, Knut.
Good morning! Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Although they blend in with their surroundings, they truly are beautiful when spotted. Sometimes it's hard to see them since they are mostly quiet as they make their way up the tree trunk. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a great day, Knut!
Beautiful, thank you for sharing this amazing capture 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I wish the clouds weren't so thick. It cleared up later, but by then it wasn't orange. Such a neat evening.
@@Wondering_About_Nature I think the clouds added an extra level of beauty. Not the usual full moon we see and the colours were amazing.
Meep (chain)
I really enjoy watching dragonflies especially these beautiful ones that we do not see in Europe. So much variety! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! I love watching your videos, too, since we have some similar species but so many different ones, too. Now that the weather has gotten colder, the dragonflies won't be around, but at least we have our videos to fill us with joy until the warm months return. Have a great day.
Thanks for sharing the footage of this beautiful butterfly! Really enjoyed it.
It's amazing how some of the butterflies aren't as colorful but still beautiful with their patterns. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Take care and have a great day.
I've noticed that the seaside sparrow has a narrower beak.
That's true. Thanks for that detail!
Beautiful and so true!
@@debraaument1741 Glad you enjoyed it.
Incredible footage thank you for sharing 💕
I was glad to be at the right place at the right time. Wish I had remembered my tripod! It was neat seeing the needlefish since I had never seen an Osprey with one before. Thanks for watching.
I've never heard of a ruby crown kinglet, it looks so cute and gorgeous when the crest is up.
We also have Golden-crowned Kinglets with yellow feathers on the head. They both are such busy birds that it's hard to get shots of the color on the head most time. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the bird in the video. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I haven't seen a ruby-crowned Kinglet yet, although my other bird watcher friends have. I live in a hardwood forest area; not many conifers here. Most RCLs, I suspect, pass-through on their way to Northern Minnesota and beyond. Thank-you for sharing. Beautiful pics and sound of their chattering.
Thanks for the comment. I love migration when we have birds coming through for just a short period. Being along the Atlantic Coast, we sometimes get birds that have flown off course due to storms. The kinglets are so busy when feeding, but this one landed right in front of me, so I was glad I had my camera ready and didn't have to move. They are usually quick to fly away when they sense a threat (although obviously, I wouldn't really be a threat!) As for their call, I finally am able to recognize it when I hear it. Some year-round birds are much easier to recognize for me, but until these come to the area, I almost forget what they sound like! Have a great day.
That was beautiful!
Glad you enjoyed it. I was thankful to find just the right soundtrack to fit the mood of this one. Have a great day and thanks for watching.
Great Capture! Herons are masters at fishing
They sure are. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
They stand like statues, waiting patiently. Wish you a pleasant week. Regards, Knut.
It's been amazing to watch them gathered together even though there are many other places they could be hunting. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you have a great day, Knut. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing these beauties. Beautiful footage. Best wishes for tomorrow. Best regards, Knut.
Hi, Knut. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Soon they will all be gone as the weather turns colder. Nature is so wonderful with the changes of the seasons. Have a great day.

That’s cool!
It certainly was a surprise finding them. Since I had never seen them before, I enjoyed researching them and was glad to read that they don't damage the trees. They were fascinating to watch. Thanks for the comment.
The drought was terrible! On our mountain herping trip two weeks ago we found 5 snakes, when historically we always find more than 100. Great video. The nature sounds and watching the animals do what they do was very peaceful.
That's crazy! I really felt bad for the snake, especially. I haven't seen one again since taking this video, but I'm sure it moved on to another spot.
Adorable ❤
I'm working on a longer video about them and hope to have it uploaded next week. They were so much fun to watch as they grew. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Beautiful snake ❤
It was so striking with those colors. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing it.
@@Wondering_About_Nature I love to find them walking in the woods and fields 😍
Interesting and informative. Thanks!
Thank you. I was so thrilled that it was close to the trail. I had seen it a few weeks ago but it was off in the distance. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Flowers and butterflies, the video is great, John likes you and subscribes to your channel❤👍👍👍👍
So glad you enjoyed the video and subscribed to my channel. I enjoy sharing all of the natural beauty around me. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it!
Clean the barnacles off the baby!!!
Sadly didn't see many monarchs this year. Our weather was erratic between crazy hot and very cold, which is unusual for this area over summer so that may have been a factor, I didn't have as many milkweed plants this year either. Love the information about the various butterflies. I agree Mother Nature does amazing work and such a variety.
My milkweed bloomed very early before many butterflies were here! It's all gone to seed now, so it will be interesting to see how it spreads. I had zero caterpillars this year-at least none that I saw-and I look each day. I know birds sometimes eat them, but it was odd not to see any.
Love the variety of captures and information. Such amazing, clear shots. Appreciate how long you must patiently wait for those images and sharing with us.
Glad you enjoyed the variety. It's amazing how wildlife sometimes seems to forget that humans are watching them, and they go back to what they were doing before we happened along. I have so many hours of footage where the wildlife is just sitting there! But we never know when they might do something interesting/fascinating.
@@Wondering_About_Nature exactly, many hours of sitting and watching to get those seconds of wow that was amazing 🤭🤓
Loved this as I have a few sumacs in my yard. Awesome to see how many creatures rely on this important tree.
I hoped you'd enjoy it especially after seeing the sumacs in your videos. I'm working on the fall episode of the series. The flowers have already gone to seed.
@@Wondering_About_Nature looking forward to it 👍 Turns out my one isn’t a staghorn after all. Ah well maybe some day.
We have the Blue Heron in my area. Amazing to see the try colour heron, thank you for sharing.
It's so neat that the Great Blue Herons can be seen in cities and other areas. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by. (I'm a bit delayed in replying to comments. Time is moving too quickly!)
@@Wondering_About_Nature no worries 😉
Watch to the end to hear a Bald Eagle calling out!
😀👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, Knut. Have a great day.
Thanks 😀
Wow that was a huge crayfish.
It sure was. I'm not sure why the heron let it go, but I guess it wasn't interested in fighting with it!
Thanks, great work and love the music. Subscribed. Cheers!!
So glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for subscribing, too. I really appreciate it. Have a great day.
Nice clip
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.
BEAUTIFUL! 🧡💛🍁🍂🧡🌏🧡💛
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.
😮😮😮😮😮😮
I know!! It was crazy to watch them.
😀
This action reminded me a my cat begging for a treat even though he has food in his bowl! Do you have Laughing Gulls in your area? Be sure to let me know.
how much time does it took😊
@@arpita4370 it was almost nine minutes! Such a fascinating journey for this butterfly. Thanks for asking. Have a wonderful day.
@@Wondering_About_Nature Thnku for the reply...well I missed this transformation...hope for the nxt one
how much time does it took😊
Wonderful 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm always amazed at the variety of dragonflies and damselflies.
Great video. We have cicadas here as well, I got some pictures last year. I have never seen the wasp before. Other day got a picture of a tiger bee, seems they are here because we also have carpenter bees. Nature has a way of balancing things out.
Capturing the footage of the wasp was fate, since I had just finished doing some yard work and happened to see her dragging the cicada! I'm glad I had my camera handy. Nature sure is a balancing act! Sometimes I feel sad when I see an eagle or other raptor snatch a duck or other prey, but I know they need to eat too! Have a great day. We have more comfortable temperatures this week, so that's a good thing! Pet the kitties for me.
@@Wondering_About_Nature I agree but unlike humans, nature understands that sometimes things do get messy, but to keep ecosystems stable a balance is needed. Kitties say thank you for the pets. Our temps here have plummeted once again, sweater weather and almost down to where the furnace will kick on, ugh, such extremes.
It was 57F degrees here this morning. I needed a jacket for my sunrise walk. But it was better than the heat and humidity we've been having. It's supposed to get back to hot and humid by Monday. Have a great day.
I've seen them and their burrows in my back yard. None this year for some reason. Didn't know that's what they did with the cicada. Very interesting!
I couldn't see the burrow where she was taking the cicada since the grass is a bit longer at that spot, but it was so fascinating to learn about them. Thanks for watching!
Interesting movie. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Wish you a pleasant week. Kind regards, Knut.
Thanks for the comment. I was glad to be there at just the right time. Enjoy your day, Knut!
Thank you. 😀 You too.
Very beautiful.
Thank you. Nature sure is amazing even during stormy weather.
Thumbs up. 👍
Beautiful variety. I have only seen 1 this year. Bizarre weather may be the reason. Haven’t seen my usual couple, male is white female is brown. Will put up on one of my videos when I find the pictures. Did get a great pic of a tiger bee the other day 😎
I think the weather does have something to do with it, too. I've had a few in my yard this year which I usually don't. I only have the bird baths and no other water source, but I guess they enjoy all the native plants, too. Looking forward to seeing the ones you saw.
@@Wondering_About_Nature I only have bird baths and not much water close by other than other bird baths, always a treat to see the dragonflies. May be awhile before the dragonflies make it to a video. LOL crazy how many photos I need to organize and find a system where they are easy to find.
Super cute. I love that we have many of the same animals and they have safe places.
After putting this video together, I had a new mammal visiting my yard in the evening! An Opossum was rooting around under the bird feeder! It was so adorable. Since it was starting to get dark, the video isn't great, but I'll put something together using the footage at some point. Did the chipmunks ever come back to your yard?
@@Wondering_About_Nature nice that you have an opossum, we have them off and on. But only once have I gotten a clear picture one coming up to munch on the cat food. LOL purina really needs to rename that product because so many critters beyond cats love that mix. Chipmunks are back and have seen several times this year, have a few cute video captures will be up over the next few weeks.
Amazing location and variety of birds and other animals. Beautiful colours on the birds. Great video as always 👍💕
Since it's about 45 minutes north of me, I don't get there quite as often as some other places, but I try to get there once a month. Living in a busy tourist area, traffic can be heavy at certain times, so I try to get there at sunrise and back home by lunchtime. Mornings are usually the best time for wildlife viewing anyway since many are just starting their day! Plus the lighting is usually better. Thanks for watching.
Great captures as always, beautiful 💕🤓
It's a magical place throughout the year. Glad you enjoyed it.
I don’t think we have them here. Thank you for sharing 💕
They will soon migrate for the winter months. It's always exciting when they first arrive with their sounds of laughter. Recently, I encountered a youngster begging next to one of the parents. It's amazing to think of how far many birds fly for migration especially on their first year! Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@Wondering_About_Nature very true.
Beautiful close-ups and details. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. Best regards, Knut.
Thank you. They are fascinating to watch especially when the sunshine makes them glow.
Thumbs up. 👍
