Really nice format for a pota video - much more useful than the traditional approach!
Very nice video! I also document my activations and am wondering what software you use to decode and display the characters on the screen. Good job!
I’m sorry to say there is no magic software. I use davinchi resolve for editing and subtile is a manual prosess that takes quite some time. With a new tittle for each character. I’ll take a peak at your channel. Tnx for being a part of the ham tuber pota comunity! 73
I never thought I would say that but It's so nice to see morse subtitles(and synchronized!) Helps a lot. Thanks for this and thanks for sharing your activation
Tnx! 73
you sound so stressed well done .
Yes, sometimes i forget to breath..😅
well done on keeping your cool with some of the guys sending so fast. I would have been tempted to send no cpy 🤣
I take it as motivation to keep learning..😅
If I had DF4JH on, who IS good, I'd be lost... The only option for me would be to turn on a decoder app and try to skim off the essentials. I'm english but speak very good spanish. When I meet someone who is learning Spanish, I immediately slow down and simplify words so they don't "glaze over" and stop talking. Same in morse.... Your video here is really beautiful and inspiring. Thanks...
Yes, it was a bit like drinking from a firehose. I managed to pick the essential and luckilly i got it an tape..😅
Great video very educative!!!
Tnx
Thx ... nice to see/hear some slower code. Helps me to get used to the protocol used and motivates me more to get on the air in cw ;)
Nice, GL on your cw. Hope to see you on the air!
Tnx fer new very useful video, dear om Oystein!
Glad to hear that
How much power (Watt)? I liked it very much, I'm stil learning. Very educative
I usualy run about 20w for CW ops. I only use a 9ah battery. Good luck on you cw. See you on the bands!
Day 18 G4XWR 16 WPM
Yes, my 18. day on air using cw
How did you decode cw for the channel
Some timeconsuming manual labour. tiles witch change for each letter
Hi Øystein, i got my new Xiegu G90 yesterday, its a great radio, but the FM is just NFM i got to buy the GSOC modul from Xiegu to get WFM :( but hey, i got another radio for WFM, the Mchf clone, but that one is "not" a Xiegu but i works :) great to see a new video from you. 73 LA-M160560
Congrats on your new tranceiver. 🎉 Great selection for portable ops. One i may consider for my next radio. 73
How do you get the letters on the screen like that?
A lot of manual labour..😅

Congrats Oysten! Im before my first CW QSO. Very emotional. Rafael SP1RAT HF1R
Tnx! And good luck on your CW. Hope to see you on the bands.
Keep at LB8ij, you are doing beautifully well. brings me back to 1975. amazing, this was only 16 wpm rate? I guess the spacing is far apart. When I was first licensed in 1975 finding this wpm QSO and much slower than 16 wpm was common place on the HF bands. I would visit the novice bands often to QSO with Novices. it was so long ago I forgot how slow was slow. edit/ adding. Slow to me was 5 wpm. there were plenty of hams sending under 10 wpm, in the late 70's when I was active.
Yes, most are quicker these days. It only adds to the callange getting on the air. There are some initiatives on fb that aranges slower qsos and allaso calling cq at slower speed, the oter stations do slow down to answer, so there is hope for those learning.
Gracias por el video , pero recomiendo para hacerlo mas facil emplear BT al pasar de una sección a otra y asi nadie se perdera o se bloqueara 73
Great advice! 👍🏻
Very cool!
Yes, tnx!
Today i sold my Yaesu ft897d and ordered a Xiegu G90 ...maybe i finaly can enjoy some field listening soon :) i always enjoy watching your videos Øystein. 73 LA-M160560
G90 looks like a exelent choise. I’m trying to convince my son to get one..
@@LB8IJ Yes i have read about it for a while before i ordered one, Radiodity have great deals on them :)
Hi, your videos are very helpful for people learning telegraphy. Could you post the decoded cw? This helps a lot in learning. If I don't receive the letters, I will look at the screen. If I receive everything, I will start making my own QSOs. Thank you 73, Raf SP1RAT HF1R
I’ll try to make more decoded videoes when time pemitts. Decoding is a manual prosess that take som time. At the moment I’m buissy building on my house. I’m exited to get up and running in a new shack in a couple of months. But I hope to get some decoding done while waiting. Tnx for watching and I’m looking forward to our first cw qso!

Hi øystein, how much power did you use on the radio? Are you "5w Qrp" or 100w? always cool when you have a new video out, and thanks for the Cw key, its great. 73 LA-M160560
I tend to use 20w on CW and 35w on ssb. I only used a single 9ah battery for this Rover.
@@LB8IJ I own a Yaesu ft897d. Im just a listening station right now as you know, but i wonder if i realy need this radio when i get my license, im more of a Qrp guy, im thinking about a Xiegu G90 for Cw. It has a great tuner and analyser, but i dont know about the decoder, i realy need one of them, i struggle with my memory so its hard to always remember everything when i have to the most 😄 but i have heard many great things about the Xiegu G90 and 20 watt.
@@Tamlin73 I found decoder mostly useful while learning, but you should strive to be able to copy without. So its not the most important part to consider in a radio when you are ready to get on the air. Dont know to much about G90 and CW but seems to be a great qrp rig

Great video, thank you for sharing! I'm learning CW right now, and am still very very slow. What you're doing seems really great for just 18 days on air using CW! How much did you do during those 18 days? And how long did you practice before your first QSO?
This was QSO nr 83 on CW. Mostly hunting pota and sota but some regular qsos. I practiced intensly (about 15-60min a day) for about 3 months before my first qso 30. october 2023. It takes time and dedication, but if you keep at it you will get there. Looking forward to having a cw qso with you!
Tnx fer QSO. Vy QSB but all ok. 73 CT1GFK
Yes, not the best conditions that day. Tnx for all the qso I see I have you in the log on sevral activations. Tnx
Nice! What antenna are you using? KQ3Q
At this Activation I was using a sloping efhw for 10,20,40m 12m long trapped at 10m. I do experiment a lot and bring different antennas for other activations.
I wonder what battery you are using to power the 891 when portable please Oystein?
I did all parks on a single 9ah lifepo4 battery. I suprised myselfe. 20w cw, 35w ssb if i remember correctly.
Very interesting, like that you have added the txt. Gives a bit of extra learning for us that's not up to speed on the cw. LB1KI
Tnx, nice to be of help to cw learners. GL
Loved the video. I am new to CW and still trying to practice every day. I am okay at sending but my copy is terrible. I can make out enough characters to hunt POTA contacts, but that is about it. Stumbled across your channel and subscribed recently. It is a big help watching your videos. TU es 73

@@LB8IJ Last sunday I joined LICW club. I am looking to follow the courses to "get on the air". At the moment I work on 40, 80m using a Yaesu 891 or USDx+ unit, and 10m with a CRT 7900 V Last year I bought a WWII straight Key from Germany This evening at our local radio club (BXE in Brussels Belgium) a man is coming to explain YAGI-UDA antennas. Should be a ton of fun !
LICW Club looks like great way to learn and meet other hams. Maby I’ll join at some point.
Even with the wet key this was a great activation video. I am learning CW and the "Decoded" peace was really helpful for me to follow along. TU es 73
Tnx, more to come..😬
I feel your frustration. May need to try another cable. I’ve seen rf do this depending on antenna and moisture. If nothing else throw the key in the junk bin. Haha. Good to see you got Pete here in Ky. K2upd. He’s a pota chaser for sure.
Yes, K2UPD have him sevral times in pota log..
Mine sends lots of dits like this when the adjustement is off, if I loosen the dits part it gets better. Or maybe if the tension is stronger so moving it to the side doesn't let the paddle connect. Not sure if that's what's up with yours. I did take everything apart and cleaned it up, it's more reliable now.
Yes, releasing the tention would probably have solved the problem. However it was a temporary issue in moist condition. Have used the same key sevral times after this activation without issue. Tnx for the tips and for watching!
Nice video thank you. Please show antenna and radio in the next vid! 73 de M5NCW
Tnx for request, I’ll try..
Your videos are awesome! At the moment I am learning too, but I still do not dare going on the bands and make my first contact in CW, maybe I should :) 73 de DL1KX
Tnx, stil have a lot to learn. At some point you just have to start on air. Its probably not going to be pretty your first time, but its not about perfection. Communicating is the goal.. Maby I’ll try to listen some more. Its a while ago, do you remember our qso in this video with all my errors? 🫣😅
@@LB8IJ I remember the contact, but I don't remember the errors, probably because you dealt with them as you should. I too made errors, but we communicated what we needed to. I've been the person on the POTA site listening hard and unable to decode, I think we probably stress ourselves into a level of CW deafness whilst trying to send and receive well. You did a great job, and thanks for the video.
Yes, stress does not help in the moment.
Tnx another nice video, dear Oystein! Time to repare your key, OM! 73
Yes, I had an Activation outside in water and slush Prior that day, and water had gotten inside my key. After drying it was ok again. Have been thinking about making a key with heating element inside for extreme weather conitions. 🤔 Maby for the next winter season…
Also bringing a spare key would be an option.
