35MPH Sprint in POURING RAIN - Gateway Cup Tour de Francis Park
12th place finish on the wettest conditions I've ever raced in! Supper happy with that result, but also left wondering what could have been. Starting to realize this is the curse of a crit racer :) Overall extremely happy with how the race went (no crashes that I knew of) and excited for this result.
After dry conditions the day before and plenty of crashes, I was super nervous when I woke up to pouring rain. Ultimately I was questioning whether or not to take part in the race. I didn't make this trip to sit out, so I decided to race and I'm happy I did. The field did a great job slowing things down and racing smart.
My goal was to just survive. I had no idea what to expect, and just wanted...

HUGE CRASH in my FIRST Cat 4 Race! Gateway Cup Tour de Lafayette

My first Cat 4 race! In the biggest field I've ever raced in, I tried to work on feeling comfortable in a group, cornering efficiently, and being patient. So much for being patient :) On the last lap I decided to move up towards the front and found myself sailing past the leaders. I thought... welp better keep going! With a decent gap I put in an effort to try and keep the field away before bei...

    Nicely done! I found myself screaming at the screen 😂 Dude…gaps after the corners. You worked harder than you needed to because you kept letting those gaps open. Especially the corner where the crash happened. That corner was your op to swing wide and push to the outside during the straight to get more shelter from the wind once you turned the final corner onto the crosswind/final straight. Otherwise, you did well. I personally would’ve pushed to the top 10 about 7 laps in to hit better lines. But 4/5 always seems to be a crapshoot with race dynamics.

    • @TonyRides
      @TonyRides Год назад

      Oh the gaps are brutal! 😂 I was aware of this during the race and really struggling to figure it out. After really looking at the video and thinking about the race, I was too scared to fully swing out after each turn and as a result would cut each corner too tight and open up gaps. Just a comfort thing at this point not wanting to be too close to other riders. I’ll figure it out tho! Thanks so much for watching/commenting and for the advice!!

    • @velmersglue
      @velmersglue Год назад

      😂 I’m willing to bet you were 600-700 watts plus on every one of those corners where you had gaps. There were a few laps where you took decent lines and stayed relatively sheltered from the wind. Your HR dropped into the 150s. But with the super sketchy 4/5 field, I get wanting to keep distance. You’ll get more confident as you do more races and rewatch footage comparing it to power and HR. What’s your power profile? Sprinter?

      @@velmersglue oof. Yeah if I could have ridden that way the whole race it would have been great. I am very much a sprinter/puncher profile, but those surges took it out of me. I traveled from Denver to do Gateway for the first time this year, and I'm glad I did. Great job on your first 4's race! Keep it up, and stay aggressive! When the front of the group slows down, sometimes you just gotta go (and sometimes it pays dividends, see ruclips.net/video/snJJph6zVC8/видео.html). Boo on the rider in front of you at the start; everyone's supposed to start the same way (the officials usually yell at folks hanging onto the barrier with both feet clipped in at a crit start). And that crash... Yowza. The rider in black (and everyone else) needs to understand that if you enter the corner on the inside, you gotta STAY inside. Thank goodness for free laps... 😎

I just needed better fitness and/or some better luck to make it work. That's interesting on the rider clipping in at the start, I had no idea. Also, I'll share my 4th race soon, but there was absolute disaster at the start and being a beginning racer I didn't fully understand free laps. Something I wish I knew better and I paid the price for it. Thanks again Garrick!

    Did you have to do something to get your sync screens to work on Garmin Virb? I am using Windows 11 and the map shows up as a script error. Maybe you're using Mac and it isn't an issue? I've been playing around with Telemetry Overlay, but I like the gauge appearances better on Garmin.

    • @TonyRides
      @TonyRides 2 года назад

      I am using a Mac and I didn't have any issues with the sync screens working. I did, however, need to use Handbrake to convert my GoPro footage in order for Garmin Virb to be able to export it correctly. Took a long time to figure that out. Let me know if you run into any more problems or have any other questions. Yeah, I'm happy with all the gauge options on Garmin Virb and hope to get a power meter soon so I can start incorporating power data into the videos! 💪

    • @nitrokyle5

      @@TonyRides Power meter is really going to up your training and your video game! It's super fun to watch during races/KOMs and on climbs. 👍🏻 What format are you having to change to with Handbrake? I haven't had any issue with exports on PC. Interesting! Thanks for the info on Virb. I'll have to do some more deep dives on forums and find workaround for the map screen. I think there are some settings you have to change in regedit to made the old Internet Explorer the default for a program instead of Edge? I was curious about your workflow, too... I like using the GoPro Quik App for edits because of the easy beat autosync. But this means I take footage from microSD to PC, apply telemetry to individual vids (which is a lot of manual syncing GPS points), then upload telemetry vids to GoPro Cloud, download to phone/tablet, then edit in Quick for Andoid. Do you have better ways for workflow on that?? I'm curious about your process if you don't mind sharing!

    • @TonyRides
      @TonyRides 2 года назад

      @@nitrokyle5 I cannot wait for the power meter! Thinking about some pedals so I can swap them out easily. Racing in the St Louis Gateway Cup Series in September and it would be awesome to have them by that time! Yeah so my workflow is: 1) Export GoPro footage to Mac 2) Convert GoPro footage using Handbrake to H.264 format with the mp4 extension - This setting is found under Presets > Matroska - If I didn't do this I would get an export error in Garmin Virb 3) Import converted footage to Garmin Virb, upload .fit file from Strava, and add data overlays - Once I styled the data gauges I saved it as a custom template preset so that I can just click a button to load my overlay template 4) Sync each video clip (footage is split in 4GB clips) with the .fit GPS location - Super annoying but I have to sync each individual clip, I haven't been able to find a workaround in which Garmin will sync GPS data across all clips at once 5) Export video and start an Adobe Premiere Pro project 6) Add the finishing touches (start line, lap counter, text graphics, etc...) and export Hopefully that helps a bit! There are so many ways to do it and I'm not sure there's an easy one😅

    • @nitrokyle5
      @nitrokyle5 2 года назад

      @Tony Rides I have the Assioma Duo pedals and I absolutely love them. My bro has the Garmin Vector 3s, and I've heard good things about them and their new Rallys, too. The ability to change between bikes is huge for me, and you know it's accurate across different bikes because it's the same meter! I got mine on ebay and they've worked really well. The use Look Keo cleats, but that wasn't a hard swap for me from SPD-SL. Thanks for sharing your workflow, appreciate it!! It helps to hear how others are doing it. That's really interesting about the export error from Virb, because I record in 1080 60 or 30 and don't have any trouble on my Win11 PC. I have wondered if it would be better to combine all video files and then do one sync on one big file? You'd end up combining them, exporting them, importing to Virb, then only syncing once. Then a massive export. I don't know if that would save time or not! Probably depends on how high horsepower your computer is with exporting. It might be faster just to sync every clip. Wondered what your thougths would be on that though. I am liking Virb better than Telemetry Overlay now that I got the sync map working again. The gauges just look a lot better.

      Yeah man happy to share! Congrats on the 3rd place finish!! 💪 For battery I've got the GoPro 10. I wasn't sure it would make it the whole race, but I had it on "Extended Battery Mode", 1080p/30fps, SuperView zoom mode, and medium stabilization settings. Turn off GPS, wifi, and all the screens. When I finished the ride I still had 14% battery left so super happy with how long that lasted! I think the fact it's constantly being wind-cooled helps a lot too. As for overlay I am using Garmin Virb actually. I use that for all the data points, and then I export it to Adobe Premiere Pro where I add some finishing touches like the lap counter, finish line, and wind direction. Next time if you preride the course, pick a spot that you know is your go to spot to start sprinting, where you can start and will be able to last until the finish line. For many people it's about 150 yards out. You started REALLLLLY early. and in the next race, if people start early, just sit on their wheel and follow them in and THEN start your sprint at 150/200 yards out

      both braking and breaking.. the guy that jumped up.is pedaling through the corners and away from danger.. not sure what happened with the other guys..was there bad luck smeared on the snake bricks?

      @@randycallow3736 Haha 😂 Yeah it took me a bit to figure out, but when I started lap 2 in 2nd place there were about 6 guys on my wheel. In the turn before the snake (downhill right turn) one of the riders slipped out and crashed, causing a big gap. Once I got up the snake on lap 2 (almost falling myself at the top 😬) I wasn’t able to see them any time I looked behind us. Lots of crashes!

      Thanks so much! Thankfully we only had to do it 3 times in the Category 5 race. I can't imagine doing it 15 times either! 🥵

      why? It's their time to race, they're not disrupting another category.
