Tip: Try bari sax if your good with alto. Just like alto, same notes, same clef, but different size. Try getting good with alto before bari. Like maybe get some practice. Bari is HUGE, but it’s kid of the same thing as alto. I played alto since 5th grade and when I go to 7th grade I might go to Bari sax. But yeah hoped this helped!

Oh wow, that sure is an absolutely terrible clarinet!! What a piece of junk that is!!! To buy a top quality clarinet, I'd go to Dawke's Music in Maidenhead. My dear hubby is taking me over there next Friday morning so that I can try out a few student clarinets with a view to upgrading my Jupiter which I've had for 20 years. I will be trying out the Jupiter JCL 700SQ, and then hopefully the Yamaha YCL 255S and possibly a Backun Alpha. It really depends what Dawke's come up with and what suits. I do love the clarinet, but having trouble crossing the break. Slowly making progress, but I have really tiny hands so it is very difficult to stretch my diddly little fingers!!!! Anyway, I'm feeling very excited here, really looking forward to next Friday!!!! 🤩

I'm just seeing how far your mouthpiece was pushed into your cork. Well, this is telling me that something was VERY wrong with your technique. My 2 cents: 1) you might have needed to play with a softer reed (hopefully NOT a syntethic reed) 2) you definitely needed to push harder with your diaphragm 3) lips too relaxed: you needed to tighten them. In the meanwhile, I hope you changed that mouthpiece as well (too close, jeez!).

You definitely have played this before because you won’t know where you put your fingers for the register key if you don’t play BUSTED‼️‼️

My clarinet was a 27$ fang clarinet and they're a lot better than the 1240$ fang clarinet at my school

Your playing may not be perfect BUT you are playing! That's the important thing. I've just recently moved from a tenor to a soprano and it's great following your journey. I've found my greatest challenge is maintaining a constant air stream, so lots of long note exercises for couple of months. Keep going as it's great to see how you are progressing!

Am I hearing you correctly? You are saying it’s 20 years old but it looks much older based on the tarnish and engraving.

Over the 60 or so years I've played woodwinds I've played a number of new, out of the case instruments. The reeds supplied are always crap. In fact, the worst reed I ever played was the one that came with my Selmer Mk VI tenor sax in 1969. The first thing you should always do is discard the reed in the case. Oh, don't get suckered into buying expensive cork grease. Chap Stick. Yes, ordinary Chap Stick is excellent cork grease.

I pick Clarinet because my friend Squidward is really good at it, but Patrick said he prefers mayonnaise… 😅

Equipment matters. A skilled player can play on almost any sax and make it play well. However, a cheap mouthpiece will always sound like a cheap mouthpiece. After the beginner phases of learning to play I think everyone should invest in a great mouthpiece. In order to find a great mouthpiece one needs to try many out. For me my go to is a dukoff D8 on tenor which I've used for 20+ years now. I just got a soprano so I'm starting my search now.

You are getting an "air" sound even with no keys pressed. Surely that is not caused by leaking pads? It sounds like it might be a problem with the reed also, or maybe the mouthpiece? Did you try different reeds, maybe a synthetic one? Was the reed soaked before playing?

Super helpful! Love all your videos. I played alto in high school and haven’t played in 18 years now. Just picked up a Soprano and struggling playing in tone. Bought a cheap one on Temu and quickly upgraded to a Jean Paul with a Jody Jazz mouthpiece. It just came today but I can’t get a sound out of it. I put the mouthpiece on the Temu soprano and it plays. Not sure what the issue is.

Get a refund and buy some groceries.

Here in the US at a thrift store, I found a baroque style alto recorder made by Mock, a German company, for $3 and is worth at least $200. It was sitting in the wood and crafts section without a case. I also found a bodhran made by instrument maker Malachy Kearns, also for like $5, but it looks like an older instrument from an older location according to the address hand written underneath on wood frame, it isn't the same as the current instrument shop. Anyway, these kinds of experiences are always fun!

What mouthpiece

For the low b flat, you need to get your reed and mouthpiece pairing to where it will speak easier in the low register without sacrificing the upper register too much. For me a thinner tip helps.

Yeah, that clarinet does suck. Regarding the Low F, most good clarinets actually have a low F that is flat. One Clarinet Shop even made a video explaining why such is the case. It's mainly because the Clarinet has a lot of engineering compromises to it, and the Low F (and E) when you get the overtone to the Higher C (and B), the distance won't be pure, so they can either make the Higher C (and B) in tune or the Low F and E in tune. They chose the High C (and B) because most Orchestras and Bands would require tuning to those notes (in concert pitch) and keeping those notes in tune, allows them to be in-tune with the rest of the instrument. If they made the Low F (and E) in-tune, the Higher C (and B) won't be in tune, and if you decide to adjust your instrument to tune those notes in that case, the rest of the instrument will be out of whack, except for those two notes. Some of the better manufacturers have added a vent-key for Low F and E so that way it would come out in tune. Just wanted to put that out there.

Yes. I started to learn on that thing and I don't recommend it. The intonation is better on mine though but the amount of air it needed seems to be the same. When I found a better one I suddenly discovered dynamics...

Most of the soprano players use a hard reed to start. Try a 1.5 or 2 reeds. You don't need more than that!

You are correct. Mouthpiece matters… a lot! Some folks seem to be able to play about anything, we mere mortals need to find a great match for us. I’m a pro tenor and alto player, and I probably searched for a year on both of them for the right piece.
