First of all, beautiful car and great video. I can share a few tidbits about this variant from memory. My late father was president of Lotus Cars USA from 1988 to 1992. There's no question he had a big influence on this generation of the Esprit Turbo and the SE variant. Doc Bundy had a huge impact on the racing program, starting with the SCCA World Challenge. Initially, they raced the "Charge cooled" SE with relatively minor modifications. Lotus was owned by GM at the time. They found the largest brakes in the GM parts bin that would fit and were allowed to use them in accordance with SCCA rules. Since Doc and co-driver Scott Lagasse were so successful in their first season, the factory got on board and began working on the X180R. The fiberglass skills of the folks in England resulted in much thinner, lighter body panels. You could lift an entire door with one finger! The unique variations that I recall for the X180R included lighter body, LSD, blueprinted engine, larger brakes, integrated roll cage, and the body trim items mentioned in the video. You mentioned Paul Newman. He was such a gentleman and a great competitor! Bobby Carradine also participated with the team for a period of time. Congrats on owning and enjoying a really special piece of automotive history!!

These cars do look very nice and have a wonderful interior, but compared to the Tesla Model S Plaid, the Porsche has far slower forward acceleration (including at high speeds), shorter claimed and actual range, and can't use the Supercharger network, which is the only reliable and widely available charging network. It also weights 300 lbs. more than the Tesla, costs about twice as much, and has worse lateral acceleration (1.02g vs Plaid's 1.05g). That last number is only part of the story though as the Porsche suspension is more sports-tuned and feels more responsive when turning. Thus, the buyer must be willing to pay for the brand cachet, steering response, and subjective preferences for a far that is in many ways the lesser.

This is the best interview of a custom car build I have seen. He really captures the essence of a big DIY project. I you push yourself to do it and complete it you will learn so much and have such pride of ownership. Nothing can compete. I can only imagine the thrill of driving it. I was an enthusiast of Japanese 4 cylinder motorcycles. The engineering of those things is so good, I can relate to his love of the SLC and its billet suspension. I too used to take it out a 6am on a Sunday morning and arrive back home at 9am before my wife would wake up.

anyway to have at least racing sliding windows..??..I would have to build some..no fresh air while driving those countryside back roads would be a bummer..and hopefully fire wall & exhaust have proper protection ,because I had a couple hours drive in an Ultima and man was it hot ,too loud & stuffy in there even with AC..it was an oven..!!..not a fun drive at all...

I like being different when it comes to cars. My dream car right now is a crown vic with a coyote and an f150 10speed trans that's supercharged... I realized that building literally any project car I have in mind is financial suicide. I then thought why not do a kit car and have been doing research. I am likely going to be ordering one of these as soon as I get out of the navy and buy property and build a shed. Till now, I get to watch videos for a couple more years. I'm not a big Chevy person but will likely be basic and go LS or LT. You have a beautiful car! I likely will not go carbon fiber because of cost but I really like your car. Thanks for sharing it with us

First of all, 👌. Obviously a very cool car. It's just a shame that for a 50K kit they couldn't engineer the body panel gaps to line up better.

This car has very attractive lines. I'd get it with British Racing Green Metallic paint, gloss black wheels and yellow calipers. I'd get the rear spoiler color matched green. I'd put black Audi S series seats with the nice snake leather stitching. I'd look to see about custom double paned glass windows all around and LOTS of sound deadening material. Then maybe see if readily available components like VW AC gauges and mirror/apple car play stereo available.

I wish there were some build pictures, this was a very good interview but the build pictures would have added so much value
