Noise only happens when rear wheel is turning. I start off no noise, get going and kill the engine and the noise continues till about 5-10 mph. I have already replaced the tensioner bearings. UPDATE: turns out the main belt pulley was loose causing all the noise. some special tools are needed to tighten the pulley nut (a holder and socket). the spec on my bike was 50 ft. lbs. plus 30-45 degrees...

    I have a trusted mechanic who told me that the Chrysler engineers made the pistons shorter (reduced the skirts) to lessen moving mass to increase engine efficiency and power. Weight savings any way they could. The result is a piston that wobbles a bit. not much, but enough to make that noise as it sort of pin balls up and down the cylinder. Chrysler was so upset by customers early-on complaining about it that they sent out teams of mechanics to go to various dealers and completely tear apart suspected bad engines. They found NOTHING wrong, although cracked piston skirts do occur, but is rarely a destructive problem. The noise is just a novelty that accompanies one the world's best engines. I have had two of these and have never had a problem whatsoever, and I got both of them with lots of miles already there from who knows who. Change your oil. Embrace the knock.

    • @notsureigaf
      @notsureigaf 10 месяцев назад

      Yup, I've had 3 different 4.0 Jeeps over the years and they've all made this noise to some degree. Current one has almost 220k, it quiets down after warming up but you can still hear the tapping if you crawl under. Not too worried about it. GM's had the same issue with some of their LS engines and most people who own them seem equally unconcerned.

  • @TOO_RAW
    @TOO_RAW 2 года назад

    Sounds like flex plate to me to be honest. I'm in the middle of trying to troubleshoot my 04 wj making the same noise but it sounds like it's coming from the bell housing not the engine. I got good compression on all cylinders, ZERO blow by, and a very slight exhaust flutter from worn rocker arms. Got 240k miles and all original top end/ bottom end parts. I'm about to start simple and try a top end rebuild today even though I'm pretty much positive it's the flex plate.

    • @DualSportDad1
      @DualSportDad1 2 года назад

      No flex plate, it's a manual trans. If you have a 4.0 wj you should take the oil pan off and see if there is a piston skirt in the bottom of the pan.

    • @TOO_RAW
      @TOO_RAW 2 года назад

      @@DualSportDad1I sort of had a derp moment there while posting that comment lol. That's #3 on the list of things to check for on my list. Only reason I didn't check that 1st is the compression numbers and lack of metal fragments in the oil. Compression is stellar for having 240k on it, all of them are between 145 and 155. About to pull the valve cover now and put new rocker arms and push rods in after I run it with the cover off for a minute to look and listen for anything abnormal. I assume it ended up being the piston skirts in your case? I have a couple videos up on my channel as an example of the noise

The engine temp at the time it stopped was about 150 degrees (about 1/2 way between 100 and 210 on the gauge). The engine was quiet after making the noise for that one minute or so. No noise when shut down and re-started after driving to work about 10 minutes and the temp was up to 210. When I heard it, I sure thought it sounded like an exhaust leak. without manual hubs up front to disengage everything this is what happens over time and faster in some cases. for everyday driving its best to add manual hubs. if not the ware and tear from turning over time breaks them down. this is why Spartans and others brands do better in the rear, there nowhere near the ware and tear because there no turning stresses. I have seen some videos that say to drive forward a few feet before starting a turn. turning the wheel from a dead stop stresses them too much. but don't know that for sure.

  • @getoffmygrass6974
    @getoffmygrass6974 5 лет назад

    rear wheel bearings or sprocket shaft bearing race would be my guess but check easy things first like your primary chain and tensioner, also when you drain the primary check for metal shavings along with the engine oil. You should be able to tell if its the wheel pretty easily but suspend your rear, pull your belt and run the engine in gear, see if the sound continues or lightens up without the load. Rear wheel would be nice and easy but if you're mechanically inclined pulling these engines apart is relatively easy. Either way stop driving it. Get on Buellxb.com and or Badweatherbikers.com and you will find a wealth of knowledge. Good luck

      @bungcheese5901 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply, my cracked header would start quiet like this, and get louder up to operating temp. I've heard that's the way she goes. Not going away when it's hot, supposed to get worse as it heats up. That's what differentiates the symptoms from piston slap/lifters and a cracked exhaust manifold. Usually..

    • @bungcheese5901
      @bungcheese5901 7 лет назад

      On further research, people have both experiences. Sound going away when warmed up and sound getting worse when warmed up. Depends on alot of things, clearances changing etc, some parts expand others contract. If it gets quieter when hot then something is expanding and closing the exhaust leak, a crack in a different spot can just as easily expand and open the leak. Could also be piston skirt slap and or lifters of course. This was meant to be a warning for anyone who has a cracked OEM manifold to not jump ship because they assume it's a piston skirt because the noise comes from the oil pan. Just was pointing out that the collector for the headers is adjacent to the oilpan so both have very similar noises and both are coming from the same spot, just something for your viewers to consider.

    • @j.dominicpitre2533
      @j.dominicpitre2533 6 лет назад

      I am having this same conundrum the last few months. I want to say it is a cracked manifold since there is no noise at all at cold start. Once that manifold heats up after a few minutes, this similar noise appears and then mostly goes away after driving. Deceptive since the air pressure from the exhaust is reverberating right off of the oil pan...if this is actually the case..

    With what I said previously I'd like to add that an auto locker is technically locked when not in use. Only the pressure of the springs between the side gears holds it in a locked position. Any (very small) amount of torque at the wheel and not at the driveshaft will overcome those springs disengaging the locker and at such low speeds while hanging in the air like that will allow the locker to grab or lock up suddenly.

  • @DriftingDragon74
    @DriftingDragon74 9 лет назад

    Idk about your offroading issues with the auto locker (possible incorrect setup? Tolerances are very strict, even .002" can make it malfunction during use) but what you show in this vid is normal. Torque load between the pinion(driveshaft input) and the axles/tires is what causes lock up to occur. Only constant torque application will keep the unit locked. Spinning This characteristic is accentuated with a standard transmission more than automatic due to sudden torque load changes when engaging and disengaging the clutch. That is why on certain low traction surfaces you must ride the brake pedal to keep it locked. I have Lokka brand lockers front and rear on my tj that work flawlessly and if I spin any one tire in neutral(driveshaft able to spin) like you did in this video the same results happen.

    Hi there. How does one differentiate between piston slap and rod knock?

    • @johndough2785

      +ChuddleBuggy Rod knock doesn't usually go away when it warms up. Piston slap does, because the heat expands it to proper tolerance.

    so what was the fix for the problem in the video??

    • @DualSportDad1
      @DualSportDad1 10 лет назад

      After a year or so of dealing with this problem I finally removed the locker. I tried to contact spartan repeatedly but never could once talk to anyone, their customer support is nonexistent. At one point the locker broke, all the pins sheared off when I was trying to get unstuck in a mud hole. Broke a axle to. I replaced the springs and pins but the locker still acted the same, jerking and popping through turns medium to tight. Lesson learned here, I'll go with a Aussie next time.

    when I jacked it up and turned the passenger rear, it acted exactly like the one in the video. Also pulled the axles and the differential and both look good on the axle spline area. I cannot see the spider gears as my Spartan is in a Samurai. I suspect when I pull it apart I will find all the metal came from the two spider gears that remained in the housing, or from the locker. Any information you have found would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    I have the same problem with my Spartan locker. It started out being locked all the time, after a few hundred miles it would occasionally unlock very violently only under hard turns on pavement. This past weekend it finally unlocked while driving down the road under a slow turn, so I thought this thing is finally breaking in. Now only the left wheel pulls and at one point neither wheel would pull. drained the oil to pull the differential, and the oil plug has tons of metal on it.

    Install it and drive it. Just try and make the first few miles off road. Mine blinded a lot on the road at first in 2wd but now only does it on hard turns, Also I'd suggest replacing the axles seals with the opposite of what you have. I had OEM axle seals that I replaced a year before so I didn't replace them when I put the locker in. Then the passenger one started leaking after the install. I put another set in and still thepassenger side leaked. The right side axle had a slight groove in it

    A new pin comes with the spartan locker. The locker ended up loosening up a good bit after some miles whereputonit. Probably about 200 miles did the trick.
