Lester Family Climbing Night 2022

A night of climbing with the family. Anna and I (Phillip) climb regularly, but Elisabeth, Abby, and Theia do not (and have some fear of heights). I am celebrating them overcoming those fears, and scaling the bouldering wall!

Making my own video for the accent challenge. I was born and raised in Cecil County, MD, at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. I went to college in Baltimore, and I now work for a global company where the Divisional HQ is out west in Arizona. Sharing that as it may add context around influences to my accent/word choices. Questions: What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? What is t...

    I grew up in Elkton. Even though I moved away, never really lost it. This video is a perfect example of upper Eastern Shore. ❤

    One thing that I think you differ in from most Marylanders is that you don't say "y'all" when pretty much everyone I know says it whether they be from Baltimore, Montgomery, PG, or Howard.

      Interesting. All of those counties are more south than me. It's definitely "you guys" near me, but the language may also be changing because while I see "guys" as gender neutral some people don't. I did notice on a trip to Harper's Ferry that people out in Western MD sounded more like the people in WVa than they did my accent.

    I was raised in Maryland until i was 8 but i moved to Georgia and lived there for about 14 years before living here in California. I never picked up a GA accent because my mom is from Maryland too, so i talk like her and hearing your accent reminds me of mine and my parents'. They are from the P.G. County area I think.

    Carroll county boy here, the thing to remember is that a central Marylander like myself will not sound the same as an eastern shore boy or a Baltimorean though we all seem to have some thing in common: how we say Maryland seems to be pretty consistent (sounds more like Mara-Lynn)

      Thanks for the comment and agreed. I tried to specify where I grew up for that exact reason (accents within accents). I have noticed I sound a bit more Philly than Baltimore compared to other Marylanders being from the top of the bay. Interestingly, I'm an Eagles fan but also an Orioles fan because of local broadcasting and lack of Ravens presence growing up. :)

      @@RegglarGuy I’ve gotten a lot of “you sound like a West Virginian and a Pennsylvania Dutch couple had a baby and you had a weird uncle from the city” not too far off I suppose, grew up in Carroll county in the 80s and 90s, my grandma is a Baltimore hon, grandpa was a tarheel (his mom was a Rosie the riveter at Lockheed Martin so moved in from out of state during the war) Dad was from Jessop, mom from DC and little ole me from the sticks soaking in all their dialectical influences plus some of my own from the dairy farmers of Carroll county (getting to be less and less of those these days). I live in Ohio now so I get told all the time that I have a funny way of saying things but it is more individual words or unusual phrases that people hear rather than the actual sound of my voice.

    As a child, I also grew up on the eastern shore. You and I share a pretty similar accent. I'm from a town called Federalsburg. It's right on the line between Maryland and Delaware, and smack dab in the middle of Delmarva. I'm in Philly now and people tell me I sound slightly southern, but as you probably know, the farther south I go, nobody will ever think I sound southern. Oh, I also wanted to say that I absolutely drop my Gs and, your example about turning "him" into "eem" or "'em" is 100% the way I speak too. I was wondering, do you ever say "in'nt"? For example, "Sure is nice out here, in'nt?" I never even knew I did this until fairly recently. It's basically me lazily saying "isn't it?"

    • @RegglarGuy
      @RegglarGuy 8 месяцев назад

      I sure do say "in'nt" (or maybe it even sounds like "idnit?"). Also get sounding southern to a northerner while not southern enough for a southerner. My dad's parents were from Appalachia, and when I was a kid I just thought they "talked funny," but now I get that each region has its own unique sounds and words.

    I’m really surprised to say that your accent sounds fairly similar to the Wyoming accent where I’m from. It’s not exactly the same, but closer that I would have expected from the east coast. Cool vid

      Interesting! I've only ever met one person from Wyoming, and she reminds me in general of the Arizona folks I work with (big difference I hear is "o" and "aw" - like "Don" and "Dawn" sound almost the same when they say it; while those two names sound totally different for me). Maybe something with the migration patterns from East to West.

      @@RegglarGuy that is interesting! I pronounce those words exactly the same way. I imagine that the Wyoming and Arizona accents can be pretty similar for the most part, with bigger differences between the more extreme accents of each state.

    I knew you were from Maryland after the first five words. I have seen some preposterous attempts on You-Tube, that bear no resemblance to even the thickest Baltimore or Eastern Shore accents. I've lived in New Mexico a long time, but when I hear the accent of Maryland, Delaware, or New Jersey , it feels very settled, very comfortable.

    Lower Eastern Shore here and we have some of the Tidewater dialect, especially the older generations. Oh, and when it's sunny and raining out we would say "the Devil's beating his wife".

    • @RegglarGuy
      @RegglarGuy Год назад

      Interesting! I have heard that people say that. My older family members have more of that "Tidewater dialect." I think over time Cecil County (at least the Eastern part) has become more "Philly" in a lot of ways.

    • @RegglarGuy
      @RegglarGuy Год назад

      Hi Heather, no, I don't. But my older family members do say it differently - those born in the 40's and 50's. In fact, they more say it like a long 'i' like in "kite" - like "wishe." But my grandmother's family was Irish descent (McDaniel was their name), so I don't know if that explains it. She also pronounced "sink" as "zink" - so, it would be "wishe yer hanz in the zink." Sounds a little Irish, though she was born in the 1920's and raised in Elk Mills. I've also noticed that Elkton is more "Delaware" in certain things (and therefore, more "Philly") in the accent, while Chesapeake City seems more Eastern Shore and Rising Sun is more Baltimore. I heard a lady from Port Deposit pronounce Baltimore as "Baldimer;" whereas I say it more "Baldimore."

    • @XiongMaoPanda
      @XiongMaoPanda Год назад

      @@RegglarGuy Very interesting and very good point about certain areas of Cecil Co! I've never met someone who says zink. Funny you mention Rising Sun, that's actually where I am from. I may be biased but I think Maryland is a rather unique state in accent and culture.

      Agreed. So, I tried to get a little more "natural dialogue" in here for people to really hear it. I'd also say - there is no Maryland accent; it all depends on where you live. Out in western MD, they sound more "southern" to me - more like West Virginia. Fascinating, at any rate. Thanks for watching!

    • @cdd0409
      @cdd0409 Год назад

      @Regglar Guy I definitely hear it all over MD but it's thicker in some areas. I feel like there are variations depending on where you go too. I grew up 50% in NY (Dad) and 50% in MD (Mom). My cousins in NY were quick to point out any hint of MD accent so I've always made sure to remove any hint of it.... a lot of people (in MD) say they can't hear a MD accent from me lol Glen Burnie drives me nuts! All I hear is a banjo when they talk.... bawwwrrr, bawwwrrr, bawwwrrr 🤬🤬🤬
